Sunday 4 September saw the Finals of the Girl’s U16 Matchplay competition at Billericay CC between Wanstead & Snaresbrook and Hutton; Hutton won the toss and elected to bat first.
Imogen Southcott and Calley Foyster opened the batting for Hutton and got off to a good start. A few wickets then fell which brought Amy Hills to the crease who scored a stylish 48 runs before being denied her half century by a good ball from Dipti Puthawala that found the stumps. There was no relief for Wanstead as they made their way in to Hutton’s middle order as Grace Poole played some cracking shots to finish on 69 runs not out.
Athletic fielding from the Wanstead girls meant the Hutton score was lower than it could have been as they finished on 205/4 off their 40 overs.
Puthawala and Nafeesa Aziz opened the batting for Wanstead in reply but an early catch saw the latter sent back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. Bethany Chambers then arrived at the crease and after a steady start, begun to put pressure on the Hutton side. Wickets fell regularly and either side were always in the game. Luckily for Wanstead, Chambers played a stunning and mature innings to see her side reach the Hutton target with just 2 balls to spare.
The final was played in the best spirit and was a fine display of the talent around the county.
