Sam Cook has been crowned the first wefinanceanycar.com Player of the Month of 2024 after receiving the most votes in a public poll.
With 50.5% of the vote, Cook won the award ahead of Dean Elgar, who received 27.8%, while fellow contenders Jordan Cox and Jamie Porter earned 11.1% and 10.6%, respectively.
The Chelmsford-born seamer has consistently shone in an Essex shirt over a number of years and, having taken 290 first-class wickets, possesses a stunning average in the format of just 19.19.
He raced out of the blocks in the season-opening fixture against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, claiming the fourth ten-wicket match haul of his career and returning figures of 10/73.
That included 6/14 in the second innings with a mostly-unresponsive Kookaburra ball as Essex blew away the hosts for just 80, winning by 254 runs.
Having been rested as a precaution for the fixture against Kent, he then returned in style against Lancashire and Durham, taking a further eight wickets to give himself an April average of just 10.39.
In the latter game at the Seat Unique Riverside, with Tom Westley unavailable, Cook captained Essex for the first time since being appointed Westley’s deputy in February.
