Former Essex and England opener Alastair Cook has today been inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, becoming only the 33rd English player to receive the honour.
Alongside South African wicketkeeper-batter AB de Villiers and India spinner Neetu David, Cook is one of this year’s inductees to the Hall of Fame, which was established in 2009.
A total of 115 players, of which 102 are men and 13 are women, have been honoured, with Cook becoming the fourth Essex player inducted, alongside Andy Flower, Graham Gooch, and Allan Border.
Although recently overtaken as England’s all-time highest Test run-scorer by Joe Root, Cook’s prolific career saw him establish himself as one of his country’s all-time greats.
He is still the highest-scoring left-handed batter in Test history, hitting 12,472 runs across 161 Test matches at an average of 45.35, alongside totalling 3,204 in 92 ODIs.
He passed fifty on 114 occasions during his international career and went on to score a hundred in 38 of those, with his best coming against India at Edgbaston in 2011, where he struck a mammoth 294.
Just over a year into his retirement from the game, everyone at Essex Cricket congratulates Alastair on the latest well-deserved recognition of what was a glittering career.
