Players visit Broomfield Hospital to spread Christmas cheer

This week, a mixed group of Essex men’s and women’s players visited two children’s wards at Broomfield Hospital to give out Christmas presents.

Men’s Captain Tom Westley, Jamie Porter, Shane Snater, and Nick Browne, alongside Sophia Smale, Cordelia Griffith, and Jo Gardner of the women’s squad, attended the hospital and met with in-patients across two wards.

Among the many gifts given out to the children and ward staff were miniature bats and soft balls, cuddly teddy bears, and chocolates.

“It was really eye-opening to visit Broomfield Hospital today and see first-hand what a wonderful job the staff here do, especially at this time of year,” said Westley.

“Sport has enormous power to uplift spirits, and if my teammates and I can provide even a little bit of joy at Christmas to children and families who have so much going on, that means the world.”

Angela Poulter, Paediatric Matron at the hospital, added: “Such visits are a reminder to everyone of the power of sport to unite and uplift people.

“It highlights that Essex Cricket aren’t just stars on the pitch, but also champions of the heart.”
