Maddie Penna signs for Essex Women

Essex Cricket are delighted to announce the signing of Australian all-rounder, Maddie Penna, on an overseas deal for the Women’s Vitality Blast campaign.

Penna, 24, currently applies her craft for South Australia in the Women’s National Cricket League as well as staring for the Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League.

Penna debuted in 2019 and has since made 43 Women’s List A appearances and 74 in Women’s T20. With a top List A score of 118* and 113 in T20, Penna has proved she can score well as a powerful right-handed middle-order batter. With the Adelaide Strikers in 2020/21, Penna became the first number seven in WBBL history to score a half-century, which included a destructive 24-run over.

Maddie not only contributes with the bat but also as a right-arm leg-spinner, having taken her best T20 bowling figures of 4/20 in just her second match in the WBBL.

“I’m really looking forward to playing for Essex this summer, and to be part of such an exciting season for the county,” said Penna.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity for me to test myself in a new environment having played T20 cricket both at home and in New Zealand over the last few months.

“I know some of the squad from their time in Adelaide over the winter and I can’t wait to head over to meet up with the team  and hopefully contribute to a successful season.”

Andy Tennant, Team Director of Essex Women, added: “We are delighted to have Maddie on board for the Blast.

“She is an exciting and dynamic young player with an excellent record in the women’s Big Bash, which has seen her earn international recognition.

“I am confident she will fit in well with our talented playing group and help us win games and challenge for T20 honours this year.”
