Essex County Cricket Club are very saddened to learn of the passing of former Essex cricketer Peter Cousens, who died on Tuesday 20 January at the age of 93.

Born on 15 May 1932 in Durban, South Africa, Peter Cousens was a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and represented Essex in the 1950s alongside the greats Doug Insole CBE and Trevor Bailey CBE.

Cousens made 39 appearances for the Club between 1950 and 1955, after making his first-class debut against Lancashire in the 1950 County Championship. In those 39 matches, he claimed 44 wickets, with best figures of 4/63.

A highlight and personal favourite memory of Cousens was when he claimed a hat-trick against the Combined Services at Chelmsford in 1950 - he is one of only 24 players to achieve this feat for Essex in first-class cricket. His final appearance came against Sussex in 1955.

Essex County Cricket Club extends sincere condolences to Peter’s family, friends and all those connected with him. May he rest peacefully.
