After 35 years, Paul Newton of BBC Essex's cricket commentary team has announced his retirement.

Paul Newton witnessed the Club winning back-back championships in the early 1991 and 1992, the Division Two title in 2016 and the Division One title in 2017 as well as the historic double in 2019. Throughout his time with BBC Essex, Newton has interviewed a plethora of Essex players both past and present.

Newton stated that Club legend Graham Gooch is his favourite player."Gooch really is an astonishing character. He used to give the ball one hell of a smack - it was majestic in the extreme, it was totally spiritually uplifting."

The 77-year-old is stepping down from radio broadcasting due to illness, having been diagnosed with bowel cancer three years ago. Everybody at Essex County Cricket Club wishes Paul all the very best during this difficult time and in his retirement.
