Glamorgan and Essex end the 2026 Rothesay County Championship with an underwhelming draw as rain caused for an early abandonment on day four at Sophia Gardens.
Essex had fought back on day three and with just 21 balls possible after a two-and-a-half-hour delay, further rain caused for the umpires to call the match a draw with no more play possible.
George Bell (66) and Noah Thain (21 not out) came out firing, scoring 14 from the day’s first over from Timm van der Gugten, then a flicked six from Thain off Raymond Toole’s first ball left the day at 351 for 6, Bell removed by van der Gugten from a low-keeping nip-backer. When play was called abandoned, Essex trailed by just 25 following on in pursuit of Glamorgan’s 505.
Essex sit eighth, 25 points clear of Leicestershire, still nervously awaiting the result of their relegation rivals’ appeal against the pitch sanction which deducted them 27 points. Glamorgan finish sixth in their first season back in Division One for over two decades with two solid performances towards the back end of the season here, and against Surrey last week, keeping them safe in a successful campaign.

Dean Elgar scored a faultless century in the last innings of his professional career as Essex put a hold on Glamorgan’s advances while following on.
The South African struck 108 to pass three figures for a 57th time in his 284-match first-class career which spanned two decades. With Elgar’s support from Tom Westley (65) in a 166-run partnership, and a counter-attacking 42-ball half-century from loanee George Bell late in the day, Essex managed to fightback to 331 for 5 at the end of day three.
Zain ul Hassan earlier took career best figures for the second time in as many weeks; the all-rounder’s 5 for 14 bettered his four-fer against Surrey last week. The visitors’ first innings was reduced to 129 all out, trailing by 376 when asked to follow on.
With Leicestershire defeat against Warwickshire inside three days confirming their final tally, Essex sit 16 points ahead of ninth – with one bowling point here to add – as they await confirmation of survival from the pending appeal over the sanctioned Grace Road pitch last month.
Glamorgan dominated the first two days of play by batting for five sessions then piling pressure onto Essex at 100 for 7 at the end of day two. Only 29 were added for the loss of the final three wickets inside the first hour; Simon Harmer’s sprightly 35 the top score of the innings. With only 12 overs in the bowlers’ legs, and 45.1 overs overall, the follow on was enforced.
Despite ul Hassan’s impressive start to the day, extending on his three-fer from overnight, orthodoxy returned as Timm van der Gugten and Raymond Toole took the new ball in Glamorgan’s second go at Essex.
From ball one it was evident that conditions had changed. The sun was beating on the Sophia Gardens wicket and Elgar was much more circumspect than in his first effort.
Ul Hassan was introduced as part of a double change with Dan Douthwaite inside the first 10 overs and the former got the initial breakthrough of Paul Walter ahead of lunch.
With workloads of Glamorgan’s seamers a point of concern with injuries spread across the squad, it was no surprise that Douthwaite and spin would need to bowl more after not being required with effect in the first innings.
Elgar and Westley were able to form a partnership with ease, the pair were unscathed through the afternoon session. The South African opener played with a natural discomfort that has served him success for a number of years, finding value in glancing and guiding balls to vacant areas. Meanwhile, Westley, who has been short of runs of late, took advantage of tiring seamers straying on line and the spin pairing of Ben Kellaway and Mason Crane with attacking fields.
With one came two for Kellaway picking up both set wickets leg-before within two overs of one another. Still with a hefty deficit, Charlie Allison and Matt Critchley wasn’t afraid to play shots to the short straight boundary at the River Taff end off Kellaway but eventually second guessing themselves brought their downfall. Critchley, shaping to sweep gave Crane a first wicket before Allison hit a full toss straight up to mid-on.
The late flurry of wickets for Glamorgan brought a freeing innings from George Bell, reaching a half-century in just 31 minutes at the crease, reaching the milestone with four consecutive boundaries off the first over with the second new ball from Toole. Bell and Noah Thain go into day four with an 65-run unbeaten stand and a deficit of just 45 courtesy of the boundary-filled final hour.

Glamorgan continued from their strong start against Essex to put themselves in the driving seat heading into day three of the final game in the Rothesay County Championship.
Asa Tribe reached 184 – from 135 overnight – with support from Billy Root’s 59 in his final game to go with Kiran Carlson’s day one century to amass a first innings total of 505.
Zaman Akhter took 5 for 107 as a starring factor in the 157-over long innings but Essex’s reply being reduced to 100 for 7, with Zain ul Hassan claiming 3 for 14, has Glamorgan well on their way to ending the season with back-to-back wins.
Essex are mathematically safe from relegation thanks to their bonus bowling point but Leicestershire’s pending appeal leaves the points tally uncertain.
Resuming 318 for 3 overnight, Glamorgan showed no hurry of intent with grey skies overhead at the start of play.
The sluggish start meant that a third bonus point would have to be hurried for – even with Glamorgan playing only for position. Colin Ingram bludgeoned a couple of boundaries, pulling Akhter’s short ball ploy before top-edging the following delivery to compatriot Dean Elgar at fine-leg.
Billy Root’s entrance and Tribe’s stubborn stay allowed the partnership to build but at 349 for 9 after 110 overs, Glamorgan could add no further the two batting points picked up.
The century stand inflicting more pain onto the revolving door of Essex bowlers, once again dominated in frequency by spin. Root, fittingly - before retirement - reached a first County Championship half-century since 2024, albeit the left-hander hasn’t had too many opportunities since Richard Dawson became head coach 18 months ago.
From 422 for 4 at lunch to 505 all out, Glamorgan did flail towards the back end of the innings; Sam Cook took two wickets in three balls to give Essex something to celebrate after wickets were previously few and far between.
The effects of five sessions in the field were evident when Elgar, greeted by a guard of honour, and Paul Walter walked out for a final session with little to gain from the day for the visitor. Under fading light, Timm van der Gugten and Raymond Toole found enough movement to make the experience uncomfortable. After being wrapped on the pads in two consecutive deliveries, Elgar edged through for the first wicket and Walter’s 18-ball stay for zero shortly followed.
Tom Westley enjoyed taking van der Gugten for three consecutive boundaries when the Glamorgan senior bowler missed his mark, but ul Hassan’s introduction kept the wickets tumbling.
Just as some stability was found between Simon Harmer, who enjoyed taking Ben Kellaway for 14 in an over, and Matt Critchley, the latter was trapped leg-before in the final over of the day by Toole who finished the day with 2 for 9 from 10.1 overs.
With 34 overs for the final session and Essex at 6 for 2, closing the day with the game swung their way was never possible but it could still get worse, and it did, leaving the door ajar for a potential follow-on and result inside three days.

Kiran Carlson and Asa Tribe both scored centuries as Glamorgan assailed in their first innings over Essex in the final game of the Rothesay County Championship.
Essex were made to rue two opportunities handed to them inside 40 minutes of one another. The first, when Tom Westley chose to bowl first thirty minutes before the start of play, and then when Simon Harmer dropped Tribe on zero in the match’s second over. Glamorgan ended the day’s play on 318 for 3 to punish the struggling Essex’s efforts.
Carlson’s 107 is his second-best knock of the season after recording a double-century at Hampshire in May – a 99 also came in last month’s game against Leicestershire. Tribe’s milestone came as a second in as many weeks, reaching three figures in a win over Surrey last week.
Essex would’ve considered themselves all but safe heading into the final four days unless Leicestershire pulled off an upset against title favourites Warwickshire but were allowed breathing space by picking up a bowling point while Leicestershire were confirmed relegated (subject to the result of an appeal over pitch sanction punishment) during the day’s play.
The toss decision would’ve been justified for the Essex side needing a strong start to wrap up confirmation of Division One cricket as quickly as possible. As it was, Harmer’s waist-high drop at second slip to an edge drawn by 17-year-old seamer Jack Auld was the unfortunate foreshadowing of Essex’s day ahead.
While the pitch at Sophia Gardens has frequently brought early excitement for seamers this season, the sun beating down on the centrally located wicket all day only allowed for Tribe and Carlson to dominate.
Zain ul Hassan also made a helpful start, playing controlled, guided shots through deep third and a pleasant straight drive off Zaman Akhter the highlights of his start. Essex would come to be grateful the opener didn’t go on to reach a milestone for himself after being dropped on 19 off Paul Walter’s bowling.
Tribe pounced upon the luck he was handed by learning a lesson outside his off stump instantly. The Jersey international was back to being fluid when bowling strayed too straight and was disciplined on his decision-making outside off-stump.
Carlson was more cautious to begin with, bogged down by Sam Cook who was the pick of the bowlers on consistency.
Following lunch, Glamorgan’s captain picked up his rate showing off his one-day style impulsive flick off the hip and using his feet proactively to the 47 overs of spin bowled in the day.
Essex were evidently flailing from early in the day. Six bowlers were used before lunch, including two spinners inside 30 overs – a sign of the pitch’s condition.
At 230 for 1 at tea, both batters were set and racing to three figures. Carlson won the race with two to deep-square-leg as Cook operated with an innovative field. Tribe followed shortly after, pulling Simon Harmer for four, one ball after Glamorgan secured a first batting point since June.
Carlson’s time enjoying a poor bowling display came to an end when Critchley snuck a short one through the pull-shot attempt with the stand worth 178.
Ben Kellaway was scratchy from ball one and always looked likely to fall cheaply when he was adjudged lbw for Critchley’s grateful second to bring Colin Ingram to the crease, greeted by a guard of honour.
The pair at either end of their career’s saw through the day’s end, claiming a second batting point against the second new ball while Essex’s struggles at least ended with confirmation of safety.
