Essex County Cricket Club can today confirm that a comprehensive review of professional cricket operations is underway.
Following a challenging 2026 season across both the Men’s and Women’s teams, the Club are undertaking a review of the professional cricket set-up. The aim is to improve and inform decision-making off the pitch, with a view to influencing positive performance on it.
The review will also ensure that the Club is ready and able to adapt to the changing global landscape and demands of professional cricket.
After the accepted resignations of both Tom Westley as Club Captain and Jason Gallian from the Club Board and Cricket Committee at the conclusion of the 2026 season, the high-profile vacancies provide an opportunity to evaluate the Club’s current position and adopt the appropriate course of action to create the best possible environment for success.
The review will consider the effectiveness of the Cricket Committee structure; identify suitable mentors to inform and guide decision making and see the appointment of a new Club Captain.
Core to the review will be ensuring that the Club continues to develop homegrown talent.
The review aims to speak to current players across both Men’s and Women’s teams. It has also invited former players and officials to share their views and opinions.
John Lever, Club President, commented on the necessity of the review:
"We want opposing teams to know that they are in for a competitive match when they play Essex.
“Punching above our weight has been a key characteristic of many Essex teams over the decades, playing our cricket in a bold but positive and enjoyable way.
“Engaging directly with our past and present players will ensure that those who have worn the shirt are central to building a stronger future for Essex Cricket."
Rachel Lewis, Chair of the Board, added:
"Regardless of the outcome of the ongoing Leicestershire appeal, we acknowledge that Club wide performances on the pitch have not met the expectations of supporters and the requirement for such a review was apparent prior to the conclusion of the 2026 season.
"Our focus is entirely on ensuring the right structures are in place to support our professional squads whilst maintaining the highest levels of accountability.”
The review is scheduled to conclude in December, at which point a detailed update and future directives will be shared with members and stakeholders.
