Essex County Cricket Club are saddened to learn of the passing of Essex Honorary Life Vice-President Lord Alan Haselhurst, who passed away on Monday 01 June aged 88 years-old.
Born on 23 June 1937 in South Elmsall, Yorkshire, Alan Gordon Barraclough Haselhurst served as a Member of Parliament for Saffron Walden from 1977 to 2017 and was an Honorary Life Vice-President at Essex Cricket. His service was recognised with a knighthood in 1995 before he entered the House of Lords as Baron Haselhurst in 2018.
Lord Haselhurst had a lifelong love of cricket. Whilst always retaining an affection for his native Yorkshire, he became a Member of Essex and a regular visitor to Chelmsford after being elected as M.P for Saffron Walden.
In 1996, he was elected to the Club's General Committee and served for twelve years. His wisdom and experience were of great value during his term of office and he was a good friend to the players, supporting their benefits and hosting functions in the House of Commons.
Essex County Cricket Club extends sincere condolences to Lord Haselhurst's family, friends, and all those who are connected with him. May Alan rest peacefully, he will be sadly missed.
