Essex Cricket are delighted to announce the signing of George Bell, who has signed on a permanent deal.
The wicket-keeper batter has signed a two-year contract with the Club, joining from Lancashire following a successful loan spell at the end of the 2026 season.
Born in Manchester, the 24-year-old made three appearances for Essex Men during his loan spell, scoring a half-century in each innings and finishing in the sixties on every occasion.
Bell made an immediate impression on his Essex debut against Yorkshire at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, scoring a gritty and disciplined 64 not out in front of the Essex faithful. He followed that with another unbeaten 61 against Warwickshire at home before rounding off the season with 66 against Glamorgan.
On signing for Essex, Bell said: "I am absolutely delighted to sign permanently with Essex for the next two years. It's an exciting opportunity, which I hope to grab with both hands, and I can't wait to get going again with the lads ahead of the 2027 season.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Chelmsford towards the back end of last season. The players and coaching staff made me feel incredibly welcome, and I’ve loved my time in an Essex shirt so far.
"The Club has plenty of talent coming through as well as a brilliant crop of senior players to learn from. It was great to see this in person last season, and I believe that this is an environment that will help me to develop my game further and hopefully contribute to Essex wins and trophies."
Bell made his first-class debut for Lancashire at Chelmsford in 2022, aged just 19, where he impressed behind the stumps. After scoring 16 and 24 in the match, with Sam Cook and Shane Snater dismissing him, Bell went on to make a further 33 first-class appearances for Lancashire.
Across 37 first-class matches, Bell has scored more than 1,400 runs, including nine half-centuries, with a high score of 99.
His abilities also extend to white-ball formats, particularly List A cricket, where he has scored nearly 700 runs in 24 appearances, including a century and a high score of 104. Bell has also made nine T20 appearances, with his most recent T20 Blast outing coming in 2024.
Essex’s Director of Cricket, Chris Silverwood, added: “George really impressed us during his loan spell, and we are really pleased that he has agreed to join us on a permanent deal.
"Not only were George's performances impressive on the field, but the way he carried himself, his attitude, work ethic and mindset also impressed us. He came into the group and made a fantastic impression on everyone, and being named our Men's September Player of the Month was a thoroughly deserved reward for what he immediately produced in an Essex shirt.
“We felt George had more than earned the opportunity to join us on a permanent deal, and we are delighted to now have him. He has already shown what he can bring to the team, and we are all excited about his addition to the squad.
“Everyone at the Club is looking forward to welcoming him back to Essex ahead of next season.”
Bell represented England Under 19s during the 2021/22 period, showcasing his talent on the international stage as the side reached the final of the 50-over Under 19 World Cup in the Caribbean.
Across 16 appearances for England Under 19s, Bell scored more than 400 runs at an average of 34.41, recording three half-centuries and a century. His highest score of 107 came from just 96 balls against Sri Lanka Under 19s in a four-day Test match at Chelmsford.
Chelmsford has already played a significant role in Bell's career. It was the venue for his first-class debut, his century for England Under 19s and his unbeaten 64 on his Essex debut. Having enjoyed success here in several different shirts, Bell will now be making it his home ground as he begins the next chapter of his career with Essex.
Everyone at Essex Cricket welcomes George Bell back to the Club and looks forward to seeing him returning in an Essex shirt. He will wear the number 17.
