Match Reports
Essex Women’s started off their County T20 Season incredibly with two plain-sailing wins against Cambridgeshire Cricket Board in Burwell.
In the first game, Essex were motored into the ascendancy early in the innings with Emily Dack getting both openers pretty cheaply, before Sally Chapman bowled Madeline Whelham for a second-ball duck. Olivia Welham helped to take Cambridgeshire past 50 before being joined by Captain Lara Neild in the middle, where the pair were able to drag the team up to a total of 98-7.
After a fast start by openers Catherine Dalton and Captain Scarlett Hughes, they both fell within quick succession of each other leaving Essex 28-2. However, this did not stop the dominance, as Jessica Olorenshaw (42) and Kate Midwood (22) were able to see Essex over the line without too many scares for an 8-wicket victory.
The second game saw Essex continue to be on top of Cambridgeshire after winning the toss and choosing to bat first with opener and captain Scarlett Hughes top scoring with a well made 70 off 47 balls, which included 9 fours and 2 sixes, before being bowled by Alice Cross. Kate Midwood helped carry the score past 200 with an unbeaten 48 to set the hosts up for a very good total.
Cambridgeshire got off to a good start with openers J Westley and S Gorantla getting the total to 36 before losing their first wicket. This was before Kate Midwood and Emily Dack caused havoc for the Cambridgeshire batters, as Dack took 3-11 off her 4 overs but Kate Midwood took match best figures of 4-7 off 4 overs. Backed up by Sally Chapman, who took 2 wickets, Essex bowled Cambridgeshire out for 63.
Essex Women’s next game is against Norfolk Cricket Board starting on Sunday 24 April for two ECB Women’s County Championship – Women’s County T20 Group 4 games at Billericay Cricket Club, where they will look to keep up the momentum of the two opening day victories.
