Match Preview: Essex Women v Middlesex

ESSEX WOMEN V MIDDLESEX
WOMEN’S LONDON CHAMPIONSHIP
THE CLOUD COUNTY GROUND, CHELMSFORD
FRIDAY 4 AUGUST | 11AM START

Essex Women play their final match of the 2023 season on Friday, as they welcome Middlesex to The Cloud County Ground for a 50-over London Championship fixture.

Kelly Castle’s charges will hope to finish their season on a high, and with the potential for a minimum ten points on offer for a win, victory could propel them ahead of Kent in the competition table.

The Eagles’ last outing against Middlesex resulted in a big win, and hopes will be high once more that proceedings will follow the form book as Essex target the summit of the table.

THE OPPOSITION

Middlesex are suffering something of a tough season in the London Championship so far, having been defeated in both of their matches to sit bottom of the five-team table.

They were convincingly beaten by Kent in their last outing in mid-July, losing by ten wickets after being bowled out for 95.

The Seaxes were also seen off by a large margin against city rivals Surrey at the end of May, being dismissed for 106 to lose by 161 runs.

However, the Women’s County T20 brought them a little more joy, as they picked up five wins from six and progressed to the Group 6 final against Kent, though a washout meant they shared the trophy.

LAST TIME WE MET

The Eagles secured a crushing win last time they encountered Middlesex, winning by eight wickets in last season’s London Championship at North Middlesex Cricket Club.

In the shadow of Alexandra Palace last August, Essex won the toss and opted to insert the hosts, with Tilly Callaghan claiming 5-18 and Hollie Dring-Richardson taking 3-8 as the Seaxes were bowled out for 77.

In reply, Jess Bird hit an unbeaten 33 and captain Kelly Castle contributed 22 as the target was overhauled comfortably inside only 19 overs.
