Essex Falcons made a winning start to their D40 Pursuit South East campaign with a comfortable 40-run victory over their Sussex counterparts at the Buxted Park Cricket Club & Sports Association ground.

Isaac Elles proved to be Essex’s star turn with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 49 off fifty balls.

Elles’ innings included five fours and one six. Matthew Hazel contributed 36, and Andy Catherall 23 towards the visitors 180 for seven.

Booker and Webster claimed two wickets apiece for Sussex.

Ethan Turner did his utmost to keep the home side in the contest by scoring 40 off 42 before he fell to a ball from Benny Fryatt.

However, Essex leg-spinner Alfie Jeeves returned excellent figures of four for 24 from a notable six-over spell, while skipper Lee Wheeler had 2/6, and allrounder Elles 2/13 to ensure the visitors maximum points following a dominant all-round performance.

Wicketkeeper Laila Robinson marked her return to the side with an impressive performance behind the stumps, overseeing the dismissals of Woolf and Dixon with her swift reactions.
