Nick Browne extends Essex contract

Nick Browne has signed a new one-year contract with Essex, extending his senior association with the Club into a 13th season.

The long-serving batter, whose number of First-Class double-centuries for Essex – four – is bettered only by Graham Gooch, has amassed almost 9,000 all-format career runs for the Eagles.

Browne’s new contract coincides with his Testimonial Year, which was awarded to him in September this year, and will celebrate his contribution to Essex Cricket, both on and off the field.

Of the current squad, only captain Tom Westley has more years of service to the Club, with the left-hander having made 190 appearances in all formats since his debut in May 2013.

He was awarded his county cap in 2015 during a season in which he became the first Essex batter in seven years to hit the milestone of 1,000 Championship runs.

Browne repeated that particular feat in the following year that saw Essex gain promotion to Division One, and then struck a further 968 in 2017 as the Eagles romped to a first title in 25 years.

He would go on to be an instrumental part of the 2019 title-winning side too, scoring 710 runs that year, and in 2022, posted his fourth career First-Class double hundred, against Somerset.

“It’s a real honour to extend my contract with Essex. I love playing here, and I’m fortunate to have done so for so long,” said Browne.

“I’m still as hungry as ever for runs, and I’m keen to make my Testimonial Year one to remember on the field too.

“I can’t wait to carry on playing in front of the brilliant Essex fans, and with the exciting squad that we have at the moment, hopefully we can bring a trophy home for them to celebrate next year too.”

Jason Gallian, Chair of the Cricket Committee, added: “We’re really pleased that we’ve been able to extend Nick’s contract to keep him at the Club for another year.

“We’ve obviously had a few departures recently, so following that, it’s pleasing that we’ve secured the services of one of our most experienced members of the dressing room heading into 2025.

“It is also Nick’s Testimonial Year, a well-deserved recognition for his long and outstanding service to the Club, and it will be a delight to have him on the playing staff once again throughout that.”
