Match Preview: Essex Women v Hampshire Hawks Women

Essex Women v Hampshire Hawks Women

Vitality Blast
Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, Chelmsford
Thursday 12 June 2025, 2:30pm

The next T20 match will see the Essex Eagles face opponents Hampshire Hawks for the second time in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

Essex Women’s winning streak was halted by The Blaze on Friday, with The Blaze winning by 7 wickets at the County Ground, Derby. Essex showed resilience as they bounced back from losing three wickets in the power play, with Grace Scrivens and Maddie Penna looking to bring recovery to the side. This effort was continued by Jo Gardner and Sophia Smale when they added 42 from 37 balls.

The rise from the Eagles was not quite enough to bring a win for the side, but they will continue their efforts back in CM2 on Thursday with what looks to be an exciting match against the Hampshire Women’s side.

Hampshire Women have won two and lost two so far in the Vitality Blast competition, currently sitting just below Essex in the league table.

In a high-scoring recent match at the Utilita Bowl, the Hampshire Hawks Women delivered an impressive performance, posting a total of 215 runs for 3 wickets. Maia Bouchier led the charge with a standout innings, scoring 92 runs off just 53 balls.

Essex Women put up a strong fight in response, finishing with 190 runs for 7 wickets. Lauren Winfield-Hill contributed a solid 69 runs from 42 balls, while Maddie Penna added explosive power with 38 runs off 17 balls, including four sixes.

This match currently holds the record for the highest combined total runs in the Women’s T20 tournament to date. With both teams being very prominent in the T20 contest, this will be a very exciting game to watch and one not to miss.

The Inside Line: JO GARDNER

Squad

Head Coach Andy Tennant has named a 14-player squad for the match against Hampshire Hawks.

We are pleased to announce that Jodi Grewcock returns whilst Flo Miller and Sophie Munro continue to recover from injuries.

The Opposition: Hampshire Hawks Women

Captain: Georgia Adams

Overseas Player/s: Charli Knott (Australia, full competition), Ellyse Perry (Australia, last six matches + Finals Day if Hawks qualify)

Key Moves: The Vipers to Hawks transition saw more outgoings than incomings – with the likes of Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Georgia Elwiss, Emily Windsor, Alice Monaghan and Charlie Dean all departing. With younger players given more chances and responsibility. But one new face looms large – the Australian great Ellyse Perry.

The Big Question: Will Ellyse Perry get Hawks over the line when she arrives? There is huge excitement about Perry’s signing but her introduction at Chesterfield on July 4, with six matches to go, may well be perfectly timed to get them to Finals Day, but equally Hampshire could be only playing for pride.

Wildcard Watch: Mary Taylor. The fast bowler missed the start of the season with a finger injury but her return in the Vitality County Cup saw her take a four for 26 in an innings none of her team-mates went at under 10s and Surrey smashed 237. A bustling and uber-accurate presence with the ball, Taylor is also more than capable of bunting late-innings runs.

Final Thought The likes of Ella McCaughan, Rhianna Southby, and Bex Tyson massively stepped up in the first Metro Bank One-Day Cup block to fill the experience void, and send Hampshire top of the 50-over table. A replication of that, and Maia Bouchier shaking off her Ashes disappointments, put Hawks in a good position to continue the proud record of women’s cricket at Utilita Bowl. Paul Prichard and co. have seamlessly made sure there has been no disruption since Charlotte Edwards’ exit.
