Match Report
A spirited half-century from Jodi Grewcock was the main positive for Essex as they fell to a 138-run defeat against a dominant Lancashire side in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, set in the picturesque surroundings of Sedbergh.
After electing to bowl first, Essex struggled to contain an in-form Lancashire top order, led by England international Emma Lamb, whose career-best 142 set the platform for the home side’s commanding total of 306-4 from their 50 overs.
Lamb and fellow opener Eve Jones (71) put on a mammoth 162-run partnership that blunted the Essex attack from the outset. Despite a tight opening spell from Kate Coppack and Eve Gray that restricted Lancashire to 44 runs in the powerplay, the breakthrough remained elusive.
Change bowlers Esmae MacGregor and Abtaha Maqsood were unable to stem the flow of runs, with MacGregor conceding 25 from her four overs as the opening pair accelerated. The 100 partnership came up in the 20th over, with Jones reaching her half-century shortly after. The pair brought up 150 in the 30th before Sophie Smale finally made the breakthrough, having Jones caught by Coppack.
That did little to slow Lamb, who powered on to three figures with a huge six off a full toss from Maqsood. Her superb 142 came from just 109 balls and included 15 fours and two sixes before she was eventually dismissed in the 42nd over.
Despite late wickets for Grace Scrivens and a run-out by the fielding side, Lancashire pushed past 300 thanks to a brisk partnership between Seren Smale and Ellie Threlkeld, leaving Essex with a daunting chase.
The reply began poorly with captain Scrivens edging Mahika Gaur behind for just two in the third over. From there, Essex struggled to build any real momentum.
Cordelia Griffith edged Grace Potts’ first delivery behind for 13, and opener Smale, who looked promising with 38, was caught at mid-off to give Alana King her first wicket. When Maddie Penna was bowled by King for 15, Essex were 100-4 and facing an uphill battle.
Jo Gardner was brilliantly caught by Kate Cross at mid-off for eight, while Grewcock stood firm at the other end, reaching her half-century from just 54 balls in a display of resilience.
However, once she fell for 52—hooking a Gaur slower ball to Morris—any realistic hopes of a fightback faded. Gaur then removed Amara Carr with her next ball, caught by Ailsa Lister, to leave Essex reeling at 142-7.
Coppack was run out for two, and although Gray offered some late resistance with a flurry of boundaries, the innings quickly unraveled. King sealed the win for Lancashire with back-to-back stumpings, removing McGregor and Maqsood to bowl Essex out well short of their target.
The result leaves Essex looking to regroup heading into the break for The Hundred, with plenty of positives to build on—particularly Grewcock’s form and glimpses of promise from the middle order.
