Surrey Women v Essex Women

Metro Bank One Day Cup
The Kia Oval, London
Tuesday 12 May, 2026

Essex Women travel into the capital this Tuesday in a rich vein of form as they face Surrey Women at the Kia Oval.

Following an astounding victory against reigning champions Lancashire Women to make it three wins on the bounce, Essex Women head to the Kia Oval for round eight of the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, Grace Scrivens' side restricted Lancashire to 251-7. Wickets were shared among Sophie Munro (2-49), Scrivens (2-38), Eva Gray (1-45) and Esmae MacGregor (1-47).

In reply to the Red Rose's total, the bulk of the runs came from Scrivens (74), Griffith (61) and Grewcock (58).

Looking ahead to the next game and aiming to make it four wins in a row, Essex’s next opponents, Surrey, sit in third place, with just two points separating the sides.

Squad

Stephen Parry has named a 14-player squad for the clash against Surrey, with the only absence being Jodi Grewcock due to her involvement with the England squad.

ICYMI: Cordelia Griffith

Surrey

Captain: Kira Chathli
Head Coach: Johann Myburgh
2025 finish: 4th
2025 leading run-scorer: Alice Davidson-Richards (595)
2025 leading wicket-taker: Dani Gregory (19)

Winter moves: Big-hitting seamer Emma Jones has permanently headed north to The Blaze while another quick, Alexa Stonehouse, has gone on a season-long loan to Warwickshire. Two additions to the squad are Rachel King and Emily Burke. Wicketkeeper-batter King signed a rookie contract in October after spending much of last year in Tier Two with Sussex, while Burke is promoted from the academy.

The big question: Surrey were all-but unstoppable in the Vitality Blast last season but must uncover the secret of how to transfer that dominance to the longer white-ball format. There were several instances in 2025 of the bowling attack coming up short defending scores of around 300, most notably in the semi-final against Hampshire where their total of 287 was overhauled with almost three overs to spare.

Player to watch: Tilly Corteen-Coleman. Given the teenager was sold at the recent Hundred auction for £105,000, it seems spurious to flag her as one to watch. However, much of her success so far has come in T20 whereas in the 2025 One Day Cup she took only two wickets. Only 18, the slow left-armer is still learning her craft and if she makes a leap forward in this format, Surrey may do too.

Final thoughts: Alice Capsey, Sophia Dunkley, Ryana MacDonald-Gay and Danni Wyatt-Hodge are centrally contracted to England, and Stonehouse has been loaned out, so there are question marks over availability in a World Cup year. Much may rest on the shoulders of last season’s leading run-scorer Alice Davidson-Richards and spinners Corteen-Coleman and Dani Gregory if Chathli is to enjoy success in her first season as skipper.

Last Time We Met

Rain denied Surrey the chance to secure a semi-final spot in the Metro Bank Women’s One-Day Cup as their match against Essex at Beckenham was washed out. Centuries from Emma Jones (141 off 117 balls) and Alice Davidson-Richards had put Surrey in a commanding position, with the visitors reaching 313-5 in a reduced 45-over innings.

Jones, making just her second List A appearance of the season, scored her first century for Surrey after previously making 147* for Glamorgan, while Davidson-Richards also starred in a dominant batting display. Essex, struggling this season with only two wins from 13 matches, were unable to respond before rain ended proceedings.

With Somerset’s concurrent match washed out, a bonus-point win for Surrey would have guaranteed fourth place ahead of their final fixture at Durham. Instead, the Beckenham washout effectively turns the game into a quarter-final, leaving Surrey’s semi-final hopes unresolved and Durham, in fifth place, just three points behind.

It was another frustrating day for Essex, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table despite Surrey’s imposing batting performance.
