Performance of the Year

There were a huge number of standout performances by players in an Essex shirt throughout the 2024 season. Vote for your favourite from the shortlist in the poll below!

Performance #1: Sam Cook’s Trent Bridge hat-trick

Sam Cook claimed the first County Championship hat-trick by an Essex bowler in 15 years as he ripped through the Nottinghamshire lower order in the first game of 2024.

Dismissing Lyndon James and Dillon Pennington lbw, either side of bowling Brett Hutton in the hosts’ first innings, Cook forced an opening that Essex took full advantage of, going on to win by 254 runs.

Performance #2: Jordan Cox blitzes Kent

Playing his first match against Kent since swapping them for Essex in the winter of 2023/24, Jordan Cox blasted an unbeaten 116* in just 89 balls to tee up a victory push.

Coming in at 56-2, with the Eagles leading by 173, Cox belted seven fours and six sixes to help his new side to a lead of 374, nullifying any chance the visitors previously held of winning the game.

Performance #3: Jordan Cox doubles up

Not content with his first hundred against Kent, Cox went even further in the return match in Canterbury just over a month later, hitting a mammoth double century to set up a big Essex win.

He totalled an enormous 207 from 255 balls, hitting 21 fours and five sixes, as the Eagles posted 591-7 declared on the way to twice bowling out Kent and winning by an innings and 96 runs.

Performance #4: Michael Pepper’s first senior century

In pre-season, Michael Pepper stated that one thing he hadn’t yet achieved in cricket that he still wanted to was to hit a hundred in any format.

In June, he managed that aim, and in style, with a stunning 44-ball 101 in Essex’s opening home Vitality Blast match against Middlesex, helping the Eagles chase down 203 to win by four wickets.

Performance #5: Michael Pepper stuns Sussex

Pepper may have caught attention with his Middlesex century, but that paled compared to his exploits at Sussex six weeks later, when he crunched one of the best shortest-format innings in Essex history.

Chasing 208, the Eagles were struggling at 90-5, only for Pepper to enter the fray and slam a barely-believable unbeaten 120 in 53 balls, ultimately guiding his side home with nine balls to spare.

Performance #6: Jamal Richards blows away Nottinghamshire

Jamal Richards snared his maiden List A five-wicket haul in style at Trent Bridge in August, picking up figures of 5/31 in Essex’s penultimate match of this season’s Metro Bank One Day Cup.

Utilising clever variations of pace, he saw off Ben Slater to begin his haul, before completing it with the innings’ final wicket of Matt Montgomery as the Outlaws were bowled out for 218.

Performance #7: Robin Das’s maiden List A hundred

After Richards’ bowling haul had helped Essex set up a chance at victory in Nottingham, Robin Das sealed it in style with an unbeaten first List A hundred.

Das made exactly 100 not out opening the batting, fluently underpinning the innings, and hit the winning runs as the Eagles comfortably chased down their target in 43.3 overs to win by seven wickets.

Performance #8: Shane Snater’s all-round Edgbaston exploits

Shane Snater displayed his all-round prowess in sparkling fashion in the penultimate match of the 2024 season against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, taking 5/13 with the ball and hitting 69.

His efforts first helped the Eagles dismiss the hosts for 78, before racking up a comfortable advantage of 154 at the halfway point, as they eventually went on to win by an innings and 40 runs.
