Chance to Shine - Street

Street Chance is an alternative format of cricket which works well in urban areas lacking in green spaces. Sessions are targeted towards areas of social deprivation; areas with large black and minority ethnic communities; and neighbourhoods identified by police where youth crime and anti-social behaviour are prevalent. Sessions are held at a variety of Hub Sites throughout Essex on weekday evenings, which combine cricket coaching.

Street Chance hub sites use a fast-paced version of tape-ball cricket – a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape – where each innings lasts for 20 balls and games last for just 20 minutes. It can be played with limited equipment and adapted to be played in almost any space, ideal for inner-city venues.

Street Chance places a strong emphasis on training and developing strong leaders in the communities. A range of CPD opportunities is provided for those involved in Street Chance. There are Cricket Activators courses run throughout schools; a Young Ambassadors Group giving participants a voice in the running of the programme; coach education courses leading to employment; and additional training for coaches, teachers and police officers where necessary.

Key Stage 1

Essex Cricket created a KS1 programme in partnership with School Game Organiser’s to allow infant schools to develop sporting provisions. The activities and games are developed around the national curriculum, allowing teachers to develop cross curriculum messages with specialist coaches (i.e. striking and fielding, chase and retrieve).

Structured curriculum sessions and workshops are offered to the schools, developing and enriching staff knowledge enabling a network of 3 tee’s competition at levels 1, 2 and 3.

2013 saw over 40 Key Stage 1 schools taking part on the scheme, working with local coaches whom have completed additional training above the minimum standards to work with the infant pupils.

Essex are one of the leading counties for disability cricket. Our ability cricket programme is designed to cover as many disabilities and needs as possible. We look to have a format to suit anyone who wishes to play cricket ranging from Table Cricket, Super 1s, Club Cricket and County Cricket. We also cover Wheelchair Cricket and Visually Impaired Cricket.

Super 1s

Super 1s is a programme funded by the Lord's Taverners and run in partnership with Essex Cricket in the Community that gives young people with a disability aged 12-25 the chance to play regular, competitive cricket. It aims to establish and sustain opportunities within cricket for people who have a disability. The programme allows young people with disabilities to unlock their potential on and off the pitch.

Super 1s hubs are running in Barking & Dagenham, Chelmsford, Colchester, Harlow, Newham, Redbridge and Southend.

Part of the programme is to also offer workshops to participants, giving them the opportunity to learn new skills and to assist with their personal development. If you wish to be involved in Super 1s please contact us.

Disability Cricket Champion Clubs

The Disability Cricket Champion (DCC) Club Programme is funded by the ECB. It aims to support cricket clubs through guidance, resources and equipment, enabling them to welcome individuals with additional needs and varying abilities to support them to play, follow, officiate and volunteer.

All DCC clubs in Essex are supported by us with extra guidance if needed and an inter-club competition to allow players to progress their skills. We currently have clubs at Brightlingsea Cricket Club, Harold Wood Cricket Club, Saffron Walden Cricket Club and Springfield Cricket Club.

If you wish to join a club or you are a club looking to become a Disability Cricket Champion Club please get in touch.

County Ability Teams

Essex have had a county disability team since 2010 and currently have four teams playing in the ECB National Disability County Championships. They are the Hawks, Falcons, Kestrels and the newly formed Stags which runs in partnership with Hertfordshire.

The Hawks and Falcons play in the D40 hardball divisions and the Kestrels and Stags play in the Super 9’s incrediball division.

The Super 9s set-up is the entry point to our elite performance pathway. The Super 9s programme has a heavier focus on applying cricketing skills and knowledge in a more structured competitive format.

A clear pathway exists from Super 1s and Disability Champion clubs into the County teams. This was emphasised in 2024 with four of the Super 9s players having come through Super 1s hubs.

Players from mainstream cricket with a disability are more than welcome to contact us and put themselves forward for selection to the county teams.

What is walking cricket?

Walking Cricket is cricket, just played at a slower pace – so it’s perfect for people who are older, or less physically able, but who still want to enjoy the thrill of the game. Everything is walking, including the ‘running’ between the wickets and fielding. A softball and plastic bats are used so no protective equipment is necessary.

How to Get Involved

Getting involved in recreational cricket is a fantastic way to stay active, meet new people, and enjoy the thrill of the game. Here are some steps to help you get started:

Attend Practice Sessions
Once you've identified a club, attend their practice sessions or open days. This will give you a chance to meet the coaches, players, and get a feel for the atmosphere of the club. Don't worry if you're new to the sport – recreational cricket is often very welcoming to beginners.

Join a Team
If you enjoy the practice sessions and feel comfortable with the club, consider joining a team. Most clubs have multiple teams catering to different skill levels, so you'll be able to find a team that suits you. Playing regularly with a team is a great way to improve your skills and bond with fellow players.

Stay Active and Have Fun
Above all, remember that recreational cricket is about enjoying the game and staying active. Don't be afraid to try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. And most importantly, have fun on the field – whether you win or lose, the camaraderie and joy of playing cricket with friends is what truly matters.
