Varun Chopra returned to the Club in August 2016, after seven successful years at Warwickshire. The opening batsman finished off the 2016 season in the Essex side as a Division Two title was sealed, he then played a part, both opening and in the middle order, in a first County Championship title in 25 years.

The right-hander continues to be more effective in white-ball cricket, as his expansive game at the top of the order can exploit any fielding restrictions. In 2017, Chopra scored two hundreds in the NatWest T20 Blast, unfortunately, both were in losing causes.

He also excelled opening in the One-Day Cup and averaged 38 to help the Eagles reach the semi-final stage of the competition.

Chopra featured for the Eagles in all three formats during the 2019 campaign ending as the Club’s leading run-scorer in the Royal London One-Day Cup, scoring 421 runs, which included a high score of 156 against Gloucestershire.
