Harmer Ends 2018 As World’s Leading First-Class Wicket-Taker

Simon Harmer ended the 2018 calendar year as the highest first-class wicket-taker in the world after picking up 106 wickets for Essex and The Warriors.

The South-African bowled almost 1,000 overs across 24 matches last year, taking 57 wickets for Essex and 49 for The Warriors at an average of 25.93.

Mohammad Abbas followed closely, taking 104 first-class wickets for Leicestershire, Pakistan, Pakistanis and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited.

This achievement means the 29-year-old has taken over 100 first-class wickets in each of the seasons he’s played for Essex, having taken 102 dismissals in 2017.

Harmer recently signed a contract extension to stay at The Cloudfm County Ground until at least the end of the 2021 season and said: “I’m really excited to sign an extension and commit my future to this great Club.

“From the moment I arrived two years ago I was made to feel part of the group and at home in Chelmsford. It is a place I now consider my second home, so it was an easy decision for me to make.”
