Simon Harmer continued his devastating form by bowling Essex to their third home victory in as many matches on Monday, as they wrapped up proceedings against Hampshire inside two days.
The South African has now taken 31 Championship wickets at The Cloudfm County Ground this season, which has taken his overall Championship count to 42 for the summer, the highest of any bowler in the country.
His latest stunning performance was witnessed by Essex legend Graham Gooch. The former England and Essex captain, who played alongside and faced the best spinners on the international scene, paid this appreciation to the 30-year-old.
Gooch said: “He is one of the best spinners I’ve seen in recent years. I was very impressed with him from day one and I’m surprised that he hadn’t played more international cricket because he has every aspect of a top-class cricketer.
“He’s a great role model in the dressing room and obviously has got good craft, has good control, spins the ball and has got great variation and good temperament so yes, he has got all the attributes.
“And all that bears itself out in his returns. His performance against Hampshire on Monday was majestic.”
