Essex Men v Surrey Men

Vitality T20 Blast
Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, Chelmsford
Wednesday 01 July 2026, 7pm

Essex Men host Surrey Men in a midweek clash at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground for round eight of the Vitality T20 Blast.

Chris Silverwood's men will be aiming to return to winning ways when they welcome Surrey to Chelmsford on Wednesday. The visitors sit second on 16 points after winning four of their opening seven matches. Essex are fourth, level on 16 points, with the two sides separated only by net run rate.

In the previous round, Essex Men suffered a 130-run defeat to Northamptonshire Steelbacks Men after the hosts posted 238 for six at the cinch County Ground.

Northamptonshire made a flying start, with Chris Lynn striking 75 and Ricardo Vasconcelos adding 44 in an opening stand of 85 inside the powerplay. David Willey then accelerated with 65 as the Steelbacks recorded their highest-ever home T20 total. Simon Harmer and Zaman Akhter claimed two wickets apiece for Essex, but the visitors faced a daunting target of 239.

Essex began positively in reply, with Paul Walter finding the boundary regularly before Jordan Cox hit 21 and Michael Pepper top-scored with 23. However, regular wickets halted the chase despite Essex reaching 66 for three at the end of the powerplay.

Leg-spinner Calvin Harrison proved the decisive figure, taking outstanding career-best figures of five for nine as Essex were bowled out for 108. Ben Sanderson supported well with two wickets as Northamptonshire completed a comprehensive victory.

A night to forget for Simon Harmer's side, who will be eager to respond with a strong performance against Surrey in front of the home crowd at Chelmsford.

Squad

Chris Silverwood has named a 14-player squad for the clash against Surrey, with allrounder Noah Thain returning to the squad for the first time since sustaining a side strain at Leicestershire.

Sam Cook is working hard in his rehabilitation from a fractured wrist. On Tuesday, 30 June, he returned to action for the Second XI against Middlesex Second XI at Garon Park, taking 2/34 from four overs before scoring 9 from 27 balls batting at number nine.

Jordan Cox is unavailable due to his selection for the England Men's T20 squad.

Surrey

Captain: Sam Curran
Overseas: Sean Abbott (Australia, all)
Finals Day appearances: Nine (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2013, 2014, 2020, 2023, 2024)
Titles: One (2003)
2025 finish: Quarter-finals
2025 leading run-scorer: Will Jacks (504)
2025 leading wicket-taker: Sam Curran (21)

Winter moves: The return of Australian all-rounder Sean Abbott, for his fourth overseas player stint at Surrey, was announced just before the start of the season and welcomed by all at the club. Abbott is available for the whole Blast competition, in addition to Surrey’s first eight Rothesay County Championship games.

The big question: It is a source of intense irritation at the Kia Oval that Surrey have still not managed to add another short-form triumph to the winning of the inaugural Twenty20 Cup back in 2003 under Adam Hollioake’s captaincy. Despite reaching eight Finals Days since, there has been no more silverware.

Wildcard watch: With no fewer than 16 players signed up already by The Hundred franchises, the player with the best chance of becoming a 17th is possibly 18-year-old Ralphie Albert, the left-arm spinner who can bat well and represented England U19s last winter. Oh, and he’s the grandson of snooker legend Jimmy White.

Final thought: In a star-studded squad Ollie Sykes, at 21, is primed to push on again this summer after making 10 appearances in last year’s Vitality Blast and impressing with his powerful strokeplay despite limited opportunities in such a strong and deep batting line-up. Overall, last year’s quarter-final exit against a Ravi Bopara-inspired Northamptonshire has only cranked up still further Surrey’s resolve to win the Blast and get a monkey off their back.

Last Time We Met

Essex finally ended their Vitality Blast winless streak with a thrilling final-ball victory over Surrey in a rain-reduced 12-over contest at the Kia Oval.

Chasing 142, Essex were propelled by a sensational 55 from Paul Walter off just 26 balls, who shared a rapid 64-run opening stand with Michael Pepper (36 off 15). The pair tore into the powerplay, taking 50 from the first three overs and putting Essex firmly in control. Pepper eventually fell to Adam Zampa, who finished with 3 for 14, but Walter carried the charge with a flurry of boundaries before being caught behind with 18 still needed.

Late contributions from Charlie Allison and Simon Harmer helped keep Essex in the hunt, with Matt Critchley calmly dispatching the final ball to the boundary to secure a dramatic four-wicket win.

Essex had earlier restricted Surrey to 141 for six, with Luc Benkenstein and Walter taking early wickets and Pepper pulling off a superb diving catch to remove Dom Sibley. Jason Roy’s 30 off 17 and Tom Curran’s 27* gave Surrey a competitive total, but Mohammad Amir’s tidy death bowling ensured the target remained attainable.

Previous Team Lineups
