Feroze Khushi pens new deal

Essex Cricket is pleased to announce that batter Feroze Khushi has signed a one-year contract extension, tying him to the Club until the conclusion of the 2024 season.

Khushi, born just 25 miles from The Cloud County Ground in Whipps Cross, is a graduate of the Essex academy and has been a part of the Eagles’ first XI since making his first-class debut in 2020.

The 24-year-old followed his red-ball bow in August that year with his T20 debut seven weeks later, before completing the set with a maiden Essex List A appearance the following year.

Over the last three years, Khushi has totalled more than 1,500 runs for the Eagles, with his all-format prowess indicated by his red-ball high score of 164, a List A average north of 45, and a T20 strike rate of just under 130.

He has continued to flourish in 2023, and despite a hand injury keeping him out of action for six weeks of the summer, he has still chalked up five half-centuries across all three formats this year.

T20_Surrey_vs_Essex_Eagles_02_07_23___04181

Having signed on the dotted line, Khushi said: “I’m delighted to extend my contract with Essex for another year, and I think this has come at the perfect time for me.

“With the season I’ve had, where I’ve scored more T20 runs than ever before, I’m feeling really good about my career at the moment, and even though I’ve had to endure some tough moments during the season with injury, I’ve pushed through those and come back stronger.

“My focus now is getting my head down and repaying the faith which the club have placed in me for another year by both building even more on this season and hopefully winning Essex some trophies.”

Essex Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, added: “We’re really happy that Feroze has signed on with us, because it’s always great when you can bring local players right through from the academy to the first team.

“Feroze has certainly shown us what he’s capable of this season and has been a valuable member of the squad.

“That said, we all know there’s a lot more to come from him, and we’re really excited to work with him going forward as we look to make him the best possible cricketer he can be.”

Match Report:

Cricket Wales clinched the D40 Pursuit national title following a 62-run DLS-adjusted victory over Essex in a hard-fought rain-affected encounter at Collingham & District Cricket Club.

Wales had booked their final place by seeing off a strong Yorkshire side in their final group match to top the northern section ahead of Derbyshire, while Essex had remained undefeated in winning the south group, beating Middlesex, Surrey, Northamptonshire and Dorset/Hampshire along the way.

Indeed, the contest was perhaps closer than the scoreline suggested with both sides providing some excellent cricket for their enthusiastic audience that had travelled some considerable miles to witness the spectacle that was played in difficult humid conditions.

Notably, opening batter Daniel Quick top scored for the Welsh side, hitting 44, while Ioan Martin contributed 34 and Jack Page 27, helping their side to a competitive 213 for eight from their forty overs. Meanwhile, Joe Moss and Alfie Jeeves, as they have so often this summer, led the way with the ball for Essex, returning impressive figures of 8-2-40-3 and 7-0-34-3 respectively.

Essex final v wales PNG

A thunderstorm during the tea interval led to a delay in the match restarting. When the rain stopped, Essex was handed a revised target of 187 from 32 overs.

But despite a knock of 40 from all-rounder Moss and a spirited unbeaten 37 from Benny Fryatt, some lean bowling from the Welsh attack, ably supported by an athletic performance in the field put a stranglehold on the Essex response.

Alex Lloyd took three for 17 and Kieran Williams 2/22 as Cricket Wales restricted their opponents to 125 for eight, securing a deserved success from what was an excellent match, played in great spirit.

Match Report:

Katherine Speed took four wickets before Tilly Callaghan hit an unbeaten 74 as Essex earned a victory over Sussex in Brighton that confirmed their status as winners of the 2023 London Championship.

Speed returned figures of 4/39 from 9.5 overs as the hosts were dismissed for 188 in 49.5 overs, before Callaghan’s 121-ball knock saw the Eagles complete a successful chase with more than nine overs to spare.

Lucy Western, who made 53, was the only Sharks batter to pass 30, with the next-best scores being made by Daisy Gibb and captain Chiara Green, who contributed 27 and 22, respectively.

It was a dominant visiting bowling display, though, and further scalps for Callaghan and Grace Poole, who both claimed identical figures of 2/18, saw Sussex fall short of seeing out their 50 overs.

Poole removed openers Izzy Collis and Phoebe Wilkinson early, and Callaghan saw off Green for her first scalp as the home side slipped to 55-3.

In-play

Western led a recovery, sharing stands of 30 for the fourth wicket with Mollie Adams and 48 for the sixth with Gibb, posting her fifty in 85 balls before being bowled by Afra Rose Mohamed.

From there, it fell to Speed to run through the tail, taking the final four wickets for just 31 runs and sewing up Sussex’s time in the middle by bowling Faye Mullins with what would have been the innings’ penultimate ball.

Callaghan then underpinned Essex’s reply, sharing in two separate half-century partnerships and receiving support from Poole, who crunched a swift 35 in just 22 balls, before captain Kelly Castle hit the winning runs.

She started confidently alongside Speed as the duo put on 56 for the first wicket in 15 overs prior to Emily Spooner pinning Speed lbw for 22.

Partnerships of 42 with Sally Chapman and 24 with Scarlett Hughes followed, before, alongside Poole, Callaghan brought up her half-century in 99 deliveries.

Group with coaches 2 png

She was especially strong through third and behind square, though also unfurled two off-drives for four, but even as she continued through the sixties, Poole was on a one-woman mission at the other end.

Six of her 22 deliveries were smashed to the fence, including one off Gibb that went all the way for six, and by the time she holed out to Western off Green, victory was almost secured.

Castle provided the final piece of the puzzle as she and Callaghan took Essex over the line, with the skipper driving her counterpart Green for four to finish with a flourish.

The five-team round-robin tournament was first played in 2021, and Kelly Castle’s Eagles are its third victors after Kent and Surrey won its first and second iterations, respectively.

Sussex are still to play Middlesex before the final table will be decided, but with Essex now a comfortable 25 points clear of second-placed Kent, and Sussex six further back, the destination of the trophy is already decided.

Falcons Ability team prepare for D40 Pursuit Final

The Essex Falcons Ability team will play in the D40 Pursuit National Final at Collingham and District Cricket Club in Newark-on-Trent on Sunday at 1pm.

The unbeaten Falcons topped the competition’s South Group, seeing off Middlesex, Surrey, Northamptonshire, and Hampshire/Dorset, and will now face Wales, winners of the North Group, for the chance to be national champions.

Having originally been set up as a development side, the team are into their fifth year and are now firmly established in the D40 Pursuit League.

Team Manager Pat Ward said, “This is a great occasion for the team and shows how far they have come in a short space of time. This year the team have been fantastic, always putting in 100% and able to take on any challenge put to them.

“It’s been a great team performance with some top class bowling and strong fielding being the key that has got us to the final. Hopefully we can keep it going and finish the season on a high, but either way the players can be proud of what they have achieved this year.”

D40 Pursuit final squad

There are two other Essex Ability teams playing in the ECB Disability County Championship, with the Hawks part of the D40 Quest League and the Kestrels plying their trade in the Super 9s League.

The Kestrels narrowly finished second to the Isle of Wight after their final match on the 20 August at Northwood CC, while the Hawks took sixth position in their division, in between Hampshire and Surrey.

Essex Development XI face final match of 2023

Essex Development XI travel to Fakenham Cricket Club to take on Norfolk in the East of England Development Competition what will be their final outing of 2023.

The Eagles currently sit second in the six-team division on seven points, one off current leaders Cambridgeshire, with two points on offer for a victory.

Norfolk, meanwhile, are fourth with three points which, barring a remarkable net run rate swing, is likely to be the highest position the Lions are capable of finishing in.

Essex are the only unbeaten team in the competition, having seen off Suffolk, Hertfordshire, and – by just five runs in a thrillingly high-scoring match that saw a total of 643 runs posted by both sides – title rivals Cambridgeshire.

Haris Usman has led the way with the bat for the Eagles, scoring 153 runs at an average of 76.5 and with a top score of 138, made in that aforementioned thriller in Saffron Walden.

Meanwhile, Om Thakeria has been the joint-leading wicket taker in the competition as a whole so far, snaring nine scalps at an average of 10.33 and an economy rate of 3.85.

The clash with Norfolk is set to take place in the market town 25 miles north-west of Norwich on Sunday 10th September, with the first ball at 11:00am.

Put in, Hutton could only manage 98-8 from their 20 overs as despite Benjamin Parry hitting 50 in 46 balls, five out of six members of the Wanstead & Snaresbrook attack picked up wickets.

WhatsApp Image 2023-08-29 at 09.45.07

Usman was one of three to take two wickets, joined by Marley Smith, who claimed 2/13 and Ali Zeb, who returned figures of 2/28, as Hutton fell short of reaching three figures.

In response, Usman led the way with a quickfire innings, aided by Zeb’s 14-ball 20 from number three, before Bilal Dar, who made 22 from 13, finished the chase after exactly 13 overs with a six.

Areeb Rashid and Harry Douris shared in an unbroken third-wicket stand of 65 to steer Woodford Wells to victory over Orsett & Thurrock in the second semi-final of the Ravi Bopara T20 Cup.

Rashid, who hit 42 in 37 balls, and Douris, who made a 21-ball 34, were Woodford Wells’ top scorers as they successfully chased down Orsett & Thurrock’s 117 all out.

WhatsApp Image 2023-08-29 at 09.45.071

Harry Boparai had played an instrumental role in restricting the total Woodford Wells would require, as he took 4/19 from three overs, alongside Kazeem Ul Hassan, who claimed 3/29 from four.

Callum Greene top scored for Orsett & Thurrock with 44 off 35 and was then responsible for one of the wickets to fall in the chase, but the efforts of Rashid and Douris meant Woodford Wells secured a win in just 14 overs.

Match Report:

Wanstead & Snaresbrook opening bowler Monty Cooper was named Player of the Match in returning figures of 2/5 as his side defeated Woodford Wells to win the Ravi Bopara T20 Cup.

Cooper’s spell, which also included a run-out off his bowling, left Woodford Wells at 27-3 and eventually restricted them to 112-9, which was a target that Wanstead & Snaresbrook easily overhauled inside 15 overs.

WhatsApp Image 2023-08-29 at 09.45.13

Captain Ben Munson led from the front with 34 and wicketkeeper Charlie Britt contributed 28, but Cooper, alongside Phil Thoufick’s 3/24 and 2/20 from Haaris Usman, kept the target comfortably achievable.

Zoraiz Saeed then made a 32-ball 54, containing six fours and three sixes, and shared in a partnership of 72 with Ali Zeb, who hit 33, before the unbeaten Harith Wajid hit four to seal a Wanstead & Snaresbrook victory.

Match Report:

Jack Carpenter and Zachary Ellis both hit important 30s as Brentwood edged out Witham in a low-scoring first semi-final of the Sir Alastair Cook T20 Cup.

Having been inserted, Brentwood set 121-7 as Carpenter top-scored with 33 and opener Ellis made 31, before restricting Witham to 107-6 in reply.

Jacob Wagner also contributed with 22, and despite two wickets apiece for Oscar Burley and Freddie Caplan, the total would prove to be enough to see Brentwood through.

WhatsApp Image 2023-08-29 at 09.43.15

Witham began strongly as Burley and captain Harrison McDonald both hit 20, putting on 44 for the first wicket, but the bowling returns of Hari Patel and Abdullah Hafeez, who took combined figures of 4/37, strangled them.

Harrison Kiddier struck an unbeaten 11 off just four balls at the end of the innings, but Witham ended just short of their target as Carpenter backed up his earlier batting exploits by bowling the final over to see out the game.

Ilford: Uzair Khan, Gautham Nair (c), Armaan Shah, Aditya Mudgal, Faizan Kazmi, Ahsan Khan, Dhruv Saini, Oman Kiany, Dinesh Jeyarooban, Sahib Virdi, Armaan Gorthy.

Match Report:

Faizan Kazmi top-scored with 43 and then returned figures of 1/18 from four overs as Ilford saw off Wanstead & Snaresbrook to reach the final of the Sir Alastair Cook T20 Cup.

Kazmi’s knock came in 37 balls and included five fours as Ilford, having won the toss, posted 152-5, with opener Uzair Khan’s 34 from 30 deliveries also proving instrumental.

WhatsApp Image 2023-08-29 at 09.43.15

Tarun Sharma bowled a miserly four overs, returning figures of 2/14, and Cyrus Malik also picked up 2/24, but Wanstead & Snaresbrook were unable to overhaul their target in reply.

Owen Humphrey top-scored with 26, while Ayan Safdar and Victor Tremewen also passed 20, but the Ilford attack bowled tightly to ensure the required rate crept away, eventually sealing victory with the final ball of the innings.

Final: Brentwood v Ilford

Team News:

Brentwood: Zachary Ellis, Casper Jeffries, Jacob Wagner, Jack Carpenter, Hari Patel (c), Abdullah Hafeez, Oliver Brooks, Owen King (wk), James Crothers, Harry Barden, Jack Brown

Match Report:

Ilford sealed the 2023 Sir Alastair Cook T20 Cup title as Uzair Khan hit a sparkling unbeaten 89 from 52 balls to comfortably overhaul Brentwood’s 126/4 with more than seven full overs to spare.

Khan’s innings, which was a 54-minute display of hitting, included 12 fours and three sixes and he shared in an unbroken stand of 120 for the second wicket with Armaan Shah to hand Ilford a comfortable win.

WhatsApp Image 2023-08-29 at 09.43.12

Earlier, Zachary Ellis had also made an unbeaten 50 for Brentwood, underpinning their total, and Jack Carpenter contributed a 21-ball 32, though consistently economical Ilford bowling restricted their scoring opportunities.

Jacob Wagner did pick up a wicket in his first over when Ilford came to chase, but Shah and Khan’s stand carried their side to victory, as the latter sealed silverware with back to back fours.

As well as lifting the trophy, Ilford will also receive further recognition next summer as they go forward to represent Essex in the ECB U15 National Club T20 in 2024.

Umesh Yadav In Numbers

Making your Test debut for any nation is a remarkable enough feat as it is, but to do it for cricket-mad India, where 1.4 billion people are distilled into a representative XI, is perhaps even more impressive.

Yet, new Essex signing Umesh Yadav has played in the format not just once, but 57 times for his country since 2011, alongside 75 ODI appearances and almost 300 additional domestic matches in all formats.

Such a decorated career has enabled him to build quite the CV, and as he pulls on an Essex shirt for the County Championship run-in, this is a look through Yadav’s personal highlights, by the numbers.

310: the highest Test strike rate ever

Yadav holds the somewhat niche record of the fastest ever Test innings of at least ten balls, having struck 31 from that number of deliveries in October 2019 against South Africa in Ranchi.

Entering the fray at number nine with his side already in the comfortable position of 450-7, Yadav smoked both his first two balls, delivered by debutant George Linde, for six.

His next two balls in the subsequent over from Dane Piedt only went for one, but he made up for it when Linde began the over after that, striking a further three sixes in five balls before being caught.

India would go on to declare on 497-9 prior to bowling South Africa out twice for 162 and 133 to win by an innings and 202 runs.

Batting

India’s number 272

It is now just under 12 years since Yadav first made his bow in the Test arena for India, in the first match in a series of three against West Indies, but he will always be the 272nd man to play in the format for his country.

He debuted alongside Ravi Ashwin, who holds cap number 271, and his longevity is borne out by the fact that Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli are the only two to have played a Test this year who made their bows earlier.

Given that neither Kohli nor Pujara played in that West Indies match, Yadav and Ashwin are also the only two on the Indian side who did appear in it to still be plying their trade in Test cricket.

Test debut

13th-most wickets in IPL history

In its’ 15-year history, some of the all-time greats of the game have spent time playing in the IPL, including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, and Kane Williamson, to name but a few.

Yadav has dismissed all of them since making his debut in the competition in 2010, and he has taken a total of 136 scalps across spells with Delhi Daredevils/Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

His best IPL figures of all time are 4/23, taken for the Knight Riders last year against the Punjab Kings, and in the overall charts, he is currently three behind Rashid Khan in 12th, and 14 off the top 10.

GettyImages-142973181

10/133: Yadav wounds Windies

Seven years after making his debut, Yadav’s best performance in the Test arena came in an encounter with the very same team, in Hyderabad.

Although the visitors were able to put up a competitive 311 all out in their first innings, it was Yadav who led the way for India’s bowlers as he took 6/88, including wrapping the innings up with two in two balls.

After India had eked out a lead of 56 following their first dig, he followed it up with 4/45 in the Windies’ second innings to set up a simple chase of 72 for victory, a task the hosts completed in 16.1 overs without losing a wicket.

That included taking another scalp, that of Kraigg Brathwaite, with his second ball, so – although the definition of a hat-trick might vary depending on who you ask – he was one delivery away from that feat.

Windies 10-for

18: a World Cup to remember

India may have fallen short of defending their title at the 2015 World Cup, but the tournament was still a particularly memorable one for Yadav individually.

He led the way for his country, claiming 18 wickets to sit third in the overall competition standings, behind only the 22 each taken by Mitchell Starc and Trent Boult, of joint hosts Australia and New Zealand, respectively.

Yadav grew into the tournament with seven in his first five games, before taking three against Zimbabwe in India’s final pool match and then ripping through Bangladesh in the quarter-finals with 4/31 from nine overs.

He claimed another four in a semi-final against Australia at the SCG, but in vain this time as the eventual champions progressed into the final.

GettyImages-467555980

53: Australia’s nemesis

Yadav’s four scalps in that semi-final, who were the rather impressive quartet of Aaron Finch, David Warner, Steve Smith, and James Faulkner, were, in all reality, just a drop in his ocean of success against the Aussies.

In addition to the 21 Australian wickets he has claimed in ODIs – second only to his 26 against the West Indies – and two in T20Is, he has taken 53 against them in Test matches, far clear of his record against any other nation.

In fact, he has claimed more scalps in Test encounters with Australia than against the next two highest countries combined, comfortably outstripping his 25 against the West Indies and 22 versus Bangladesh.

Wickets v Aus

1 Champions Trophy

He may have missed out on the World Test Championship in his last match for India, but Yadav has still experienced success with his country, most notably winning the 2013 Champions Trophy.

He played in all five matches of the tournament, and after rain reduced the final, against hosts England, to a 20-over contest, he returned economical figures of 1/10 from two overs.

That helped India restrict England to 124-8, short of the 130 they needed to win, with that sole wicket being none other than Yadav’s now-teammate, Alastair Cook.

Essex secure Umesh Yadav signing

Essex is delighted to announce that India seamer Umesh Yadav will join the Club for the final three matches of the 2023 LV= Insurance County Championship.

Yadav, 35, has played 57 Test matches for his country alongside 75 One-Day Internationals and nine T20Is, during which he has taken a combined 288 wickets.

He made his Test debut in a five-wicket victory over the West Indies in Delhi in November 2011, with his most recent appearance in the format coming in June’s World Test Championship Final against Australia at the Oval.

Domestically, he has represented Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy and Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy at first-class level in his homeland, and possesses an overall red-ball bowling average of 29.49.

He will be eligible for selection in home matches against Middlesex and Hampshire, as well as the end of season trip to Northamptonshire.

Upon signing his contract, Yadav said: “I am really pleased to join Essex and make what I hope will be some valuable contributions to the team’s success this year.

“I enjoyed playing in England with Middlesex last season, and it will be good to return and test myself in those conditions again, especially in the midst of a title race.”

Essex Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, added: “Umesh is a superb signing for us, and we all know what he will be able to bring to our attack at a crucial time of the season.

“He is vastly experienced and has taken wickets at the top levels of the game for more than a decade now, so as well as contributing during our run-in, we hope he can pass on some of his wisdom to our young players too.”
