Ben Allison loaned to Worcestershire

All-rounder Ben Allison will join Worcestershire on loan for the next two Vitality County Championship fixtures.

Allison was previously loaned to the Pears for the conclusion of the 2023 County Championship, and will now rejoin the New Road outfit for a home meeting with Surrey and a trip to Durham.

He has appeared in four Vitality Blast matches for Essex this season, and remains available for selection for upcoming shortest-format fixtures against Hampshire Hawks and Kent Spitfires before his loan begins.

Essex Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for Ben to get game time while not compromising on the quality of cricket he will play.

“He is still developing as a cricketer, and the most important thing for him now is simply to be playing; as such, this is a great chance for him and we look forward to seeing how he gets on.”

Result: Essex Falcons won by 43 runs

Match Report

Words: Brian Jeeves

Essex Falcons returned to D40 Pursuit South Group winning ways with a hard-earned 43-run victory over a young and talented Sussex side at Harlow Town Cricket Club.

The home side posted a competitive 186 for eight, with some notable contributions with the bat.

Benny Fryatt led the way with an excellent half-century. It was Fryatt’s highest score in Essex colours. He was eventually dismissed by a delivery from Phelps, having scored 57, a knock which included seven boundaries.

Skipper Lee Wheeler hit 25, and Isaac Elles 22 from 19. Meanwhile, Alfie Jeeves also made his highest tally for the county, closing the innings unbeaten on 34. Stuart was the pick of the Sussex bowlers, returning figures of 3/27.

But the visitors made quick ground in their pursuit of the target. Stuart and Ferguson put on 41 for the opening wicket. The latter was eventually trapped lbw by Matt Thomas, while Stuart fell to Jeeves thanks to a catch at mid-on from Martyn Doe.

Essex struggled to contain the enthusiastic Sussex batters. Nevertheless, Thomas gave them plenty to think about, finishing with 3/24. Wheeler had 2/11, while Teresa Fitten bowled superbly for her 1/11.

The contest was very much in the balance until the final ten overs when the Essex attack turned the screw. Indeed, the outcome was far closer than the result suggested in a game played out in tremendous spirit.

Graham Napier Officially Opens ‘152 Bar’

On Friday, Essex legend Graham Napier was our guest at The Cloud County Ground to officially open the ground’s new ‘152 Bar’.

The opening took place ahead of the Vitality Blast game against Sussex Sharks, and he received a warm welcome by Essex fans on the outfield ahead of play by sharing his memories of a historical day in the Club’s history.

The ‘152 Bar’ is named in recognition of Napier’s iconic innings of 152 runs from just 58 balls against the Sussex Sharks back in 2008. This remarkable feat set a world record for the most sixes in a T20 innings, a performance that remains etched in the memories of supporters. His explosive batting that day included an astonishing 16 sixes.

The ‘152 Bar’ is located within the Essex Fanzone at The Cloud County Ground and is open for all Vitality Blast matches this season, with a beer garden and live music in the build up to the cricket.

England Under-19s gear up for opening Youth ODI in Chelmsford

Charlie Allison warmed up for England Under-19s’ opening Youth ODI at The Cloud County Ground on Friday by hitting 56 in a thrilling warm-up win over a Young Lions Invitational XI yesterday.

With Luc Benkenstein and Noah Thain also in the side, Allison’s 50-ball knock, which included seven fours and three sixes, was second only to Rocky Flintoff’s 106 in England’s total of 290-8.

England captain Benkenstein also chipped in with a valuable 25 from just 18 deliveries, and that helped the Three Lions narrowly overhaul the 288 they had been set with eight balls to spare.

After Benkenstein had won the toss and elected to field, his own return of 1/27 from six overs helped England bowl the Invitational XI out in 48.1 overs.

His wicket was that of Thomas Rew, who was caught off a top edge by Thain at first slip for six, having aimed a sweep at Benkenstein’s leg-spin.

Tickets are still available for this Friday in Chelmsford, and with Essex’s up-and-coming young trio in good form, a thrilling match awaits under the lights at The Cloud County Ground.

England Under-19s at The Cloud County Ground in 2024

Essex’s own trio of Charlie Allison, Luc Benkenstein, and Noah Thain will all again represent England Under-19s this summer.

The first game of a three-match Youth ODI series will take place at The Cloud County Ground on Friday 28 June.

Women win one from two in second T20 double-header

Middlesex v Essex

Women’s County T20 – Group 3
Haberdashers’ Boys School
Sunday 16 June 2024

Middlesex: Saskia Horley, Issy Routledge*, Georgia Irving+, Louise Poulter, Artemis Downer, Sonali Patel, Bhavika Gajipra, Gayatri Gole, Anisha Dissanayake, Layla Judge, Rachana Cambampaty, Lucy Porter.

Essex: Katherine Speed, Grace Poole, Bella Howarth, Tilly Callaghan, Amu Surenkumar, Jess Olorenshaw+, Jess Bird*, Bella Johnson, Sally Chapman, Hannah Davis, Prisha Bedi, Anjali Mistry.

Scorers: J Johnson & C Bryant
Toss: Essex won the toss and elected to bat
Result: Middlesex won by nine wickets

Match Report

Saskia Horley’s 64 not out from 52 balls saw Essex well beaten by Middlesex in the opening match of a Women’s County T20 double-header at Haberdashers’ Boys’ School.

Despite Essex winning the toss and electing to bat, they were restricted to 122-5 from their allotted 20 overs, with 29 from Katherine Speed and Tilly Callaghan’s 26 the top scores.

Bhavika Gajipra was the pick of the home attack, claiming 3/23, while Layla Judge picked up 2/27 as regular wickets meant Essex were unable to build up much momentum.

Grace Poole struck Judge for back-to-back fours in the second over, but her dismissal one ball later, caught by Sonali Patel, precipitated a low-scoring first 10 overs, with the Eagles on 61-2 at halfway.

There was not much of an uptick in the second half either, as despite Amu Surenkumar contributing to her 23-ball 25 by hitting Patel for two fours in the 12th over, Middlesex bowled tightly.

In response, the hosts began in positive fashion as Horley hit Prisha Bedi for three consecutive fours in the opening over, and an opening stand of 56 from 42 built a solid platform for the chase.

Bedi ended that partnership by bowling captain Issy Routledge for 27 at the start of the eighth over, but there was to be no more joy for Essex as the hosts reached their target without further loss.

Horley reached her fifty, which featured six fours, from 39 balls in the 15th over, and one delivery later, Middlesex brought up their team 100 when Georgia Irving struck Callaghan for four.

Irving eventually then hit the winning run from the final legitimate ball of the penultimate over, taking a single off Sally Chapman and leaving Bedi’s 1/27 as the only Essex figures to contain a wicket.

Berkshire v Essex

Women’s County T20 – Group 3
Haberdashers’ Boys School
Sunday 16 June 2024

Berkshire: Mia Rogers+, Poppy Tulloch, Ariana Dowse, Ashleigh Muttitt*, Francesca Sweet, Izzy Storrar, Freya Johnson, Kali-Ann Docherty, Shayna Chikhlia, Mary Briscoe, Lily Bowlby.

Essex: Katherine Speed, Grace Poole, Bella Howarth, Tilly Callaghan, Amu Surenkumar, Jess Olorenshaw+, Jess Bird*, Bella Johnson, Sally Chapman, Hannah Davis, Prisha Bedi, Anjali Mistry.

Umpires: L Conder & M Juniper
Scorer: J Johnson
Toss: Berkshire won the toss and elected to bat
Result: Essex won by two wickets

Match Report

A starring all-round performance by Bella Johnson saw Essex bounce back to record a tense two-wicket win over Berkshire in the second game of a double-header at Haberdashers’ Boys School.

Johnson picked up 1/15 from three overs with the ball and executed two run-outs as Berkshire were restricted to 106-6, and then struck an unbeaten 37 off 26 to top-score in a successful Essex chase.

The Eagles were grateful for cameos from captain Jess Bird, who made 15, and Amu Surenkumar, who hit 11, while Hannah Davis’s late unbeaten eight from six balls was valuable too.

Having won the toss, Berkshire initially proceeded serenely to an opening stand of 68 in 12.3 overs, only for Johnson to have Mia Rogers caught by Sally Chapman for 44.

Within the next three overs, she had also run out both Rogers’ fellow opener Poppy Tulloch for 31, and Ariana Dowse for two, leaving Berkshire 82-3 with 4.2 overs to go.

Two balls later, Tilly Callaghan drove home Essex’s charge by bowling captain Ashleigh Muttitt for two, and Grace Poole saw off Francesca Sweet for five in identical fashion in the penultimate over.

Yet another wicket went down before the score had reached 100, with Bird executing the third run-out of the innings to remove Freya Johnson for a duck to put Berkshire on 97-6 with one over to go.

Izzy Storrar and Kali-Ann Docherty were at least able to put up three figures, though if Essex were feeling confident at half-time, they quickly found themselves up against it.

Johnson bowled both openers Poole and Tilly Callaghan, Shayna Chikhlia did for Amu Surenkumar and Jess Olorenshaw, both caught by Ariana Dowse, and Tulloch bowled Bella Howarth.

Added to Bird being run out by Storrar, Essex were left reeling at 51-6 in the 12th over and in need of a steadying force, though fortunately the precocious Johnson was on hand to provide it.

She was initially watchful, before the 16th over when, with the innings in need of a boost as Essex required 40 from 28, she counter-attacked against Mary Briscoe with two boundaries in three balls.

Berkshire remained hopeful as they picked up a seventh and an eighth wicket with Lily Bowlby responsible for both, first bowling Katherine Speed before Sally Chapman was caught by Muttitt.

However, Johnson remained on course, and thanks to her final two fours from the first two balls of the last over, Essex were able to cross the line with just enough to spare in the tank.

Match Highlights

Match Report

Paul Walter turned in a superb two-over spell as Essex ground out a third Vitality Blast victory in a row with a 16-run win on DLS over Middlesex at Lord’s in difficult and rainy conditions.

Jordan Cox top-scored with 31 not out from 19 balls, while home seamer Noah Cornwell claimed 2/29 as the Eagles crashed their way to 129-4 from a curtailed 12.4-over innings.

In response, a severely-truncated innings saw the hosts set 80 to win from 36 balls, and Walter bowled a game-turning 2/16 to restrict them to 63-2, handing Essex a morale-boosting win.

On an unseasonably gloomy evening at Lord’s and following a rain delay, Tom Helm and Blake Cullen initially found plenty of movement, though Adam Rossington did counter in typically bullish style.

Noah Cornwell removed him via a Joe Cracknell catch on the point fence for 17, but Dean Elgar and Michael Pepper picked up the baton to stand Essex at a commanding 66-1 after the powerplay.

Pepper was bowled by a vicious Cornwell inswinger for a 12-ball 23 and Elgar offered a return catch to Luke Hollman for 28 from 17, though Jordan Cox continued his good form to maintain the rate.

Accompanied by Walter, the pair put the Lord’s crowd on notice with a maximum apiece, and Cox continued to move through the gears even when Walter was bowled by Ryan Higgins for 18.

He stood unbeaten in the 13th over, but when the weather intervened in the contest again, it was for more than an hour, which was enough to bring about a premature end to the Essex innings.

Middlesex were ostensibly set their target in 12 overs, but just at the exact moment play was scheduled to restart, another swirling shower forced the covers back on.

With that, the hosts’ overs were again significantly reduced, but Stephen Eskinazi and Max Holden kept them in the contest by striking 34 from their first three overs.

However, that still left the Seaxes with 46 to get from the three that remained, and the turning point came when Walter saw Eskinazi caught in the covers by Dean Elgar for 15.

Moments later, Ryan Higgins holed out to Simon Harmer at midwicket for just two, allowing Sams and Walter to complete the remaining two overs and close out the victory, in spite of Holden’s 24-ball 41.
