Match Highlights:

Result: Essex Eagles win by 6 wickets

All hail the Essex Eagles who have reached Vitality Blast Finals Day for the first time since 2013 following their victory over Lancashire Lightning by 6 wickets.

Chasing 160 for victory, an unbroken partnership of 60 in exactly 5 overs between Ryan ten Doeschate and Ravi Bopara took the Eagles across the finishing line with four balls to spare.

Ten Doeschate struck 45 and Bopara 39 to add to his 2 for 28 that ensured he carried the man-of-the-match award away for the third successive match.

The Eagles chase was interrupted at one stage by rain and when the action resumed after a 29 minute delay, the threat of further intervention by the weather increased the pressure on the batting side to keep ahead of the DLS score, should the match be curtailed prematurely.

Although Tom Westley was dismissed for 8 just before rain halted play with the Eagles 14 for 1, Cameron Delport went on to hit 44 from 30 balls that included 7 fours to put Essex on course and ahead of the clock.

But Delport was one of two wickets to fall in successive deliveries – Adam Wheater was run out for 13 immediately after Delport’s demise – to leave the Eagles 66 for 3 in the ninth over.

Dan Lawrence added 15 but when he departed, 55 runs were still required with the Eagles have fallen behind the required asking rate.

However, the responsibility of accelerating weighed light on the shoulders of the highly experienced ten Doeschate and Bopara who firstly ensured their side was ahead of the asking rate.

With the realisation that the game would last the full course without further weather interference, the pair set about picking the gaps in the field whilst finding the boundaries with regularity.

Two boundaries in the 17th over that yielded 11 runs left the Eagles requiring 35 from 3 overs and at the end of the next over, during which Bopara cleared the ropes, the target was 23 from 2 overs.

Bopara did enjoy one piece of good fortune on 32 out of 152 when he was dropped by James Faulkner in the deep after striking two successive maximum blows off-spinner Liam Livingstone. Ten Doeschate then struck the same bowler for another 6 as 22 were collected from the over leaving the scores level with one over to go.

It took just 2 further deliveries for Bopara to end the game when he hoisted a ball from leggie Matt Parkinson high into the crowd and start the Eagles celebrations.

On a cold and breezy night in front of a crowd of 1017 at the neutral Emirates Riverside venue, Simon Harmer won the toss and put Lancashire into bat and they made a steady, rather than scintillating start in an innings that only really started to fire in the last six overs.

Alex Davies carried his bat for a 55-ball unbeaten 80 that included 9 boundaries receiving chief support from Dane Vilas as the pair put on 89 in 11 overs for the fourth wicket.

That carried the Lightning from 47 for 3 after the duo started their partnership in the 7th over. Vilas made 41 from 36 deliveries but apart from one maximum blow and one other boundary, the Lancashire skipper was content to push the singles and twos to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Davies improvised to good effect including successive scoop shots for fours against Aaron Beard in the penultimate over of the innings.

Beard had removed Liam Livingstone in the opening over of the match when the batsman attempted to hoist the ball into the leg side only to miss and find his stumps rearranged.

Beard also breached the defences of James Faulkner in the 19th over but the pick of the Eagles attack was Ravi Bopara who ended with figures of 2 for 28.

The all-rounder sent down 8 ‘dot’ balls from his first 13 deliveries, during which he claimed the scalps of Steven Croft for 8 and Glenn Maxwell who played across the line on 14 and was adjudged leg before.

Then Davies and Vilas took a grip on proceedings. At the halfway stage of the innings, the scoreboard showed 64 for 3 but, after a serene start during which they failed to find the boundary for 5 overs, the pair started to up the tempo.

They collected 12 runs from Bopara’s final over – the 15th – before gathering 17 from the next, bowled by Cameron Delport. That included the only 6 of the innings.

The final four overs amassed 41 runs although Jamie Porter conceded just 6 runs during that sequence whilst also having Vilas caught by Paul Walter at deep backward square leg.

But the Eagles were to find the target within their remit, and they ended an unwanted sequence of nine successive defeats in knockout matches since that win over Notts Outlaws in 2013.

Essex Eagles now go to Finals Day on September 21 as the form side and with the belief that this could be the year when they finally lift the Vitality Blast Trophy after many years of frustration.

Meet the Opposition: Lancashire Lightning

The Eagles head to Durham’s Emirates Riverside ground in buoyant mood following wins over Surrey and Kent Spitfires last week. Lancashire will also be confident after finishing top of the North Group and dominating with just two defeats over the 14 games.

Titles: 1 (2015)

Finals Days: 7

Coach: Glen Chapple – A talismanic all-rounder who retired with 985 first-class wickets and nearly 9,000 runs to his name. The 45-year-old captained the Red Rose to Championship title success in 2011. Four Finals Day appearances to his name as a player and was assistant coach when they won it in 2015.

Captain: Dane Vilas – An experienced South African wicketkeeper-batsman with a solitary T20 international appearance to his name. First season as full-time skipper, he led them at stages last season with Liam Livingstone injured. In the winter, he captained Simon Harmer’s Jozi Stars to the inaugural Mzansi Super League title in South Africa.

Overseas Signings: James Faulkner (Australia), Glenn Maxwell (Australia).

Narrative: Lancashire, on paper, must be one of the favourites to win this summer’s Blast. They have all bases covered, power in bucketloads with the bat, bowling options – seam and spin – aplenty, gun fielders galore and lots of T20 experience.

Star Man: Glenn Maxwell – The Aussie is ranked by the ICC as the world’s best all-rounder in T20 cricket and the third-best batsman. A three-dimensional cricketer, he will empty the bars at Emirates Old Trafford and around the North Group grounds. His off-spin bowling was heavily utilised in the early-season Royal London One-Day Cup.

Mr Consistency: Steven Croft – Captained the side to their only title so far in 2015 and made 148 consecutive career T20 appearances for the Lightning between June 2006 and last July, an English record. Bats, bowls and, at 34, is still one of the best fielders going around.

Under the Radar: Richard Gleeson – When you consider some of Lancashire’s bowling options in James Faulkner, Saqib Mahmood and Matthew Parkinson, it is fair to say that the 31-year-old ex-Northants quick, may not grab many headlines. But he had a solid record in T20 prior to his debut campaign with the Lightning – 34 wickets in 31 appearances – and his extra pace could be useful on tired Old Trafford pitches.

Killer Stat: Prior to 2019, no other county had won more than Lancashire’s 104 T20 matches since the format’s inception in 2003. Only Nottinghamshire (103) and Warwickshire/Birmingham (101) had topped 100.

Wednesday’s quarter-final will be broadcast live on Sky Sports from 7pm with the winner booking a place to Finals Day on Saturday 21 September at Edgbaston.

Match Preview: Lancashire Lightning v Essex Eagles

The Essex Eagles face Lancashire Lightning in the quarter-final of the Vitality Blast on Wednesday at the neutral setting of The Emirates Riverside, home to Durham County Cricket Club.

The Red Rose county, who topped the North Group, have been forced to seek an alternative venue to their traditional ground at Old Trafford because of the fourth Test match that is being staged there.

The Eagles snuck into the last eight of the competition via a flourishing finale to the qualifying stages of the South Group, winning three out of the last four matches.

Now Simon Harmer’s side has the opportunity to progress to Finals Day for the first time since 2013 and Head Coach Anthony McGrath admits that the late surge of form came at the right time.

He said: “We’ve done very well to qualify. At the halfway stage of our group matches, we were struggling for momentum, we’d had a couple of very good results, mixed in with some disappointing performances.

“Then we had a few games affected by the weather which at least allowed us to pick up a few points and regroup. From there on, we came back stronger, put in some excellent performances and got our rewards with a quarter-final place, although we did leave it late.”

The Eagles will have to cope from now on without fast bowler Mohammad Amir, who returned to Pakistan following Friday’s win against the Spitfires.

McGrath added: “It’s unfortunate because he’s bowled exceptionally well for us and played a huge part in getting us through to the quarters.

“But it is what it is and it gives the opportunity for one of the other lads to come in, take his place, and take their chance like Jamie Porter has done in the past couple of matches.”

McGrath was quick to heap praise on Dan Lawrence who is the Eagles leading run-scorer in the competition with 345 runs which includes 4 half-centuries.

McGrath said: “Dan has really blossomed this season, he’s a powerful, strong guy who has been hitting the ball hard and he is full of confidence and it’s great to see him doing so well.

“He’s an exciting talent, he’s got a big future ahead of him and he will have a key part to play for us over the years ahead.

“Hopefully, he can make another major contribution in the quarter-finals.”

Nick Browne Wins DeVines Player Of The Month

Nick Browne has been named the DeVines Player of the Month for July, after receiving 49% of the votes, beating Matt Quinn, Ryan ten Doeschate, Simon Harmer and Cameron Delport to the award.

Browne was a huge part of the Club’s success at the start of the month, starring in the victory at Trent Bridge. The opener battled hard against a talented Nottinghamshire bowling attack to score a mammoth 163 in the first innings, which set his side up for an innings victory.

The 28-year-old will be back in County Championship action next week as Essex face Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Welcome to The Cloudfm County Ground, where the Essex Eagles take on Kent Spitfires in the Vitality Blast, with Simon Harmer’s side searching for a win that could see them progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

Match Preview: Essex Eagles v Kent Spitfires

The Essex Eagles face Kent Spitfires in the final group stage match of their Vitality Blast campaign at The Cloudfm County Ground tonight, and Simon Harmer’s side need a victory to have any chance of making it through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Although the Eagles start the game in seventh place in the table, they are one of four teams locked on 13 points and all with one match to play. The Eagles could still squeeze into the quarter-finals should results elsewhere be favourable.

Kent Spitfires are currently in third place with 14 points and with Sussex Sharks and Gloucestershire having already booked their place in the last eight, an intriguing battle is set for this evening before the remaining two teams from the South Group secure their places.

A win by 19 runs against Surrey on Thursday night kept the Eagles dreams of progression alive after unbeaten half-centuries by Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschate took the side to 186-4.

Then paceman Jamie Porter took centre-stage. Making his first appearance of the summer in the short-form of the game, he whipped out dangerman Aaron Finch as well as Mark Stoneman and Sam Curran within his first two overs subsequently. He finished the match with figures of 4 for 38.

The 26-year-old reflected: “It was a great performance from everyone. Ravi and Tendo getting us to a total that we thought was well above par gave us the perfect platform and then all our bowlers were exceptional, we gave them absolutely nothing.”

And he was naturally delighted to make such an immediate impact on his return to the white-ball game, adding: “Getting the three early wickets was a tremendous boost for us and, as I say, all the bowlers did their job superbly.

“Since I’ve come back from injury, I’ve worked really hard on my skills both for red and white-ball cricket, so it was personally very satisfying to stick to my plans going into the game, get those wickets against Surrey and play a part in our win.”

Essex Eagles squad to face Kent Spitfires:

Simon Harmer (11) (Captain)
Mohammad Amir (5)
Aaron Beard (14)
Ravi Bopara (25)
Sam Cook (16)
Cameron Delport (89)
Ryan ten Doeschate (27)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Jamie Porter (44)
Shane Snater (29)
Paul Walter (22)
Tom Westley (21)
Adam Wheater (31) (Wicket-keeper)
Adam Zampa (88)

Meet the Opposition: Kent Spitfires

The final home match in this year’s T20 group stages sees the Eagles take on Kent Spitfires at The Cloudfm County Ground.

Both teams need a win to qualify to the quarter-final stages but the Eagles will be relying on Glamorgan to record a first win this year’s tournament to sneak a place at the last minute.

However, with captain and star player, Colin Ingram in the ranks they always have a strong chance to clinching a victory.

Titles: 1 (2007)

Finals Days: 2

Coach: Matt Walker – Mid-way through his third season at the helm, Walker still holds the record for the highest first-class individual score at Canterbury (275* v Somerset in 1996). An innovative, hard-working coach popular with players and supporters alike, he has assisted England’s T20I preparations for the past two summers.

Captain: Heino Kuhn – Will act as interim skipper in the absence of Sam Billings, whose return to full fitness following shoulder surgery is imminent. A forceful batsman, Kuhn brings South African grit, dynamism and a determination to win to the leadership role.

Overseas signings: Faf du Plessis (South Africa). Earlier on in the tournament: Adam Milne (New Zealand), Mohammad Nabi (Afghanistan).

The Narrative: Backed by dynamic fielding, no holds barred batting and overall nous with the ball, the Spitfires have excelled in white-ball cricket for the past three seasons without clearing the final hurdle to Finals Day. Faf du Plessis was brought in this week to bring some fire-power in the absence of Adam Milne (injured) and Afghanistan spinner Mohammad Nabi.

Star Man: Faf du Plessis – The SOuth African captain struck 60 on Thursday against Gloucestershire and will be the only Oversea’s player for the Spitfires on Friday.

Mr Consistency: Daniel Bell-Drummond – The former England Lions batsman has underpinned Kent’s recent white-ball success with his stand-and-deliver approach to top-order batting. With over 2,000 runs in the format at a strike rate of 133.74, he will be looking to add to his one T20 century (112* v Surrey at Tunbridge Wells, 2016).

Under the radar: Alex Blake – A Kent academy graduate and white-ball specialist whose ‘range hitting’ can turn a game on its head in a handful of overs. A dynamic fielder with a gun arm and safe pair of hands, his best form is crucial to Kent success.
