Match Preview: Gloucestershire v Essex Eagles

Anthony McGrath will be looking for his side to make an immediate response to last night’s 7-wickets defeat to Hampshire when the Essex Eagles face Gloucestershire at The Bristol County Ground this evening in the Vitality Blast.

The Eagles Head Coach said: “There are still games to play and the league is still pretty tight. We’ve got a new captain (Simon Harmer) in this format this season and he has wanted to do things slightly differently.

“The games come thick and fast and it is a tough group that we are in, so we just need to try and string two or three wins together to gather some momentum and give ourselves a chance going into the remainder of the T20 season.

“We are hoping that the presence of Mohammad Amir can have an impact but it’s not all down to him. We have to be a bit more consistent as a team and build some momentum over the remaining games in the competition.

“A lot of the teams are playing more bowlers than batsman, that’s the formula they’ve gone for and we are trying to find the right balance ourselves. But not having our best asset in Amir available hampered us at the start of the competition as it would do any team. But that was out of our control, we just got on with it. Hopefully, he will aid our performances from here on in.

“The more options you have as a captain the better. It is a difficult game for bowlers and so the more weapons and variations you have the better. With Amir being a left-armer, that does make things better for a varied attack.

“But generally, in T20, if you have a couple of players who are enjoying a great match, that goes a long way towards winning the game.”

Essex Eagles squad to face Gloucestershire:

Simon Harmer (11) (captain)
Mohammad Amir (5)
Aaron Beard (14)
Sam Cook (16)
Cameron Delport (89)
Ryan ten Doeschate (27)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Matt Quinn (94)

England U19s suffer defeat at Billericay

International cricket headed to Billericay on Thursday (1 August) as England Under 19s took on Bangladesh Under 19s in the second game of a Tri-Series, which also includes India.

England U19 won the toss and decided to field. After posting an imposing 224 all out, their second-string bowling attack ran through the visiting side in 39 overs, bowling them out for 152.

There was hardly any resistance from England as Tamim starred with a strong bat with Mahmudul who put up a formidable partnership of 108 runs which was a game-changer as they never allowed the England bowlers to settle down and bowl in rhythm. Bangladesh’s dominating total came mainly due to two partnerships.

Mathews helmed – 108 for the second wicket with Mahmudul Joy and 78 runs with Hridoy before his knock. He only stepped on the gas when he figured it was absolutely necessary, and by then Bangladesh were well on their way to a strong total.

Mahmudul Joy struck five fours in his 41 off 68 balls, falling to the first of Finlay Bean’s two catches. Tamim, at the other end, kept up the score by contributing sixteen fours and two sixes before his knock to George Hill in the 40th over of the innings.

Nick Kimber picked up a 5-fer (wicket haul) in a space of 9 overs while giving away just 38 runs holding a strong economy rate of 4.22. While Cullen and Hill took one each wicket.

Bangladesh U19 posted a formidable total to chase which needed a good opening partnership from team England if they had any chance to challenge this target. Well set batsman Jack Haynes of England was dismissed by Hasan at 40 off just 43 deliveries holding the highest strike rate of the team of 93.03.

There was no proper set partnership between the England boys. Bean established a score of 30 runs off 45 balls from the middle order before he ended his innings.

The rest of the England team collapsed like a pack of cards. Impressive bowling performance by Sakib and Hasan who had a wonderful bowling partnership claiming 6 wickets among them and giving away just 47 runs of the 16 overs bowled with 3 maiden overs aided in England never getting on the roll to chase such a massive total.

Losing wickets at crucial intervals and no partnership in the middle order bundled their innings at 152. Bangladesh U19 won the game by a huge margin of 72 runs.

England Under 19s next match is at The Cloudfm County Ground on Saturday (2 August) with play starting at 11am – more information.

Match Report:

Essex Eagles crashed to defeat in their Vitality Blast clash with Hampshire at The Cloudfm County Ground after they were bowled out for just 133 in 16.4 overs.

Put into bat, they had reached 81 for the loss of only one wicket, but then capitulated to leave the visitors to cruise to a 7-wicket triumph with 26 balls to spare.

After Cameron Delport departed to the first ball of the match, when he edged to Liam Dawson at slip when facing Chris Wood.

Tom Westley and Adam Wheater then set about repairing the damage and seemed to have paved the way to a testing total.

Westley struck three sixes and three fours in making 44 from 29 deliveries whilst Wheater struck a six among his five boundaries when compiling 39 from 26 balls. But once Westley was bowled by left-arm spinner Dawson, the floodgates opened.

Wheater clipped a Mason Crane leg-break to mid-wicket and the remainder of the Eagles batsman, apart from Paul Walter surrendered timidly. The departure of Westley signalled a disintegration that saw nine wickets tumble in the space of 47 balls while 52 runs were scored.

Half of those came from Walter whose unbeaten 26 came off 13 deliveries and included one six and three fours.

Crane was the main beneficiary of the Eagles demise returning 3 for 24 from his four overs while Wood and Dawson picked up 2 for 18 and 2 for 31 respectively.

Essex welcomed Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir for his first appearance of the season following and he struck with his second ball when Hampshire replied.

Aneurin Donald drove the first ball to the boundary but his stumps were left in disarray from the next Amir delivery. But any hopes the hosts may have entertained of making a fight of it were soon to evaporate once James Vince joined Rilee Rossouw in the middle.

Vince was to collect an entertaining half-century from 34 balls with the help of eight fours and a six. Vince ended up sharing a stand of 78 in 9 overs before Rossouw was caught on the boundary edge for 25 when straight driving Simon Harmer.

The Essex captain struck again by bowling Sam Northeast for 13 with the visitors just two runs short of victory but Vince was to finish with an unbeaten 87 from 54 balls. He smashed 3 sixes and 12 fours as Hampshire secured their first victory at Chelmsford in five attempts.

The Eagles return quickly to Vitality Blast action when they travel to Bristol to face Gloucestershire on Friday night.

The Cloudfm County Ground To Host England U19 Fixture

The England U19s continue their tri-series with Bangladesh and India later today (Thursday), facing Bangladesh at Billericay CC. The 50-over series started at Cheltenham last week and heads to Chelmsford for two matches.

Following the match at Billericay, England and India face off at The Cloudfm County Ground on Saturday (3 August), with the match starting at 11am.

Entry into the ground is free and the Pavilion will be open from 10:30am. Food and drink will be served from midday with vegetable curry & rice available, priced £7.50.

We hope to see plenty of faces down at The Cloudfm County Ground cheering on The Three Lions.

Meet The Opposition: Hampshire

An important two days of Vitality Blast cricket begins with the visit of Hampshire to The Cloudfm County Ground. Both sides will be looking to for the win to put them in the mix for a qualifying spot as a busy August of games arrives.

Here’s the low-down on Thursday’s opponents…

Titles: 2 (2010,2012)

Finals Days: 7

Coach: Adi Birrell – The popular South African arrived at the Ageas Bowl in the winter and already has a runners-up medal to his name in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

He has plenty of experience having led Ireland at the 2007 World Cup, along with stints with the Proteas and England Under 19s.

Captain: James Vince – Vince has been Hampshire’s T20 captain since 2013, skippering his county to Finals Day four times during his reign. Having been a member of England’s World Cup squad, he’ll be aiming to continue his successes this summer.

Overseas signing: Chris Morris (South Africa)

The Narrative: Hampshire are out for redemption and revenge. The county suffered their worst T20 campaign in over a decade when they managed just two wins last year. James Vince’s men are still hurting from their Royal London One-Day Cup final defeat to Somerset, but little is more dangerous than a wounded animal.

Star Man: Rilee Rossouw – Has the nickname ‘The Entertainer’ for a reason; crowds are rarely bored when he is at the crease with his power-hitting among the best in the competition. The South African’s strike-rate of 146 for Hampshire is by far the highest in the current side.

Mr Consistency: Liam Dawson – Second in the Hampshire statistics for wickets, runs and catches in 2018, there aren’t too many more rounded all-rounders than Dawson. The left-arm spinner epitomises control in all aspects of his game.

Under the radar: Aneurin Donald – The big-hitting batsman is striking (literally!) his form at the right time. The Welshman recently hit 225 runs at a strike-rate of 118 in a Specsavers County Championship match to warm himself up for the Blast.

Killer Stat: No team has more than Hampshire’s seven Finals Day appearances.

Tickets for this match are sold out but you can still catch the Eagles in action this season with 4 other games taking place at The Cloudfm County Ground!

Match Preview: Essex Eagles v Hampshire

Essex Eagles face Hampshire at The Cloudfm County Ground on Thursday and Mohammad Amir has been named in the squad for the first time after having his UK Sporting Visa approved.

The 27-year-old left-armer was one of the standout bowlers in the World Cup and his pace combined with his consistent accuracy thrilled the Chelmsford crowd when he represented the Eagles two seasons ago.

Amir claimed the highest number of wickets by a Pakistan bowler in the 2019 World Cup, a statistic that gave him much satisfaction.

He said: “Yes, that was really pleasing for me. It was much-needed for me because before the tournament, I was struggling to take wickets.

“Everyone wants to bowl at 90 mph and it’s not that easy. But I’m getting back to my best and I’m getting wickets and I’m focussing on my speed. But also, economy rate in T20 cricket is very important, more so perhaps than taking wickets actually.”

On playing at Chelmsford again, Amir said: “I loved playing in front of the Essex fans when I was here last, they were very supportive, and it was a splendid place to be.”

“I’m delighted to be back here because they are a really good club. They are like my family and now I want to perform really well for Essex and the crowd.”

Essex Eagles squad to face Hampshire:

Simon Harmer (11) (Captain)
Mohammad Amir (5)
Aaron Beard (14)
Sam Cook (16)
Cameron Delport (89)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Matt Quinn (94)
Shane Snater (29)
Ryan ten Doeschate (27)
Paul Walter (22)
Tom Westley (21)
Adam Wheater (31) (Wicket-keeper)
Adam Zampa (88)

Amir Set For Essex Eagles Return

Essex Cricket can today confirm that Mohammad Amir is now in receipt of his UK Sporting Visa, which will allow him to play against Hampshire at Chelmsford this coming Thursday.

Anthony McGrath, Head Coach at Essex Cricket said: “I am thrilled that this has now been completed and that Mohammad can concentrate on the match ahead with us.

“He will give us the extra dimension as a left-armer in our bowling unit, swinging the ball into the right-handed batsman, as well as that control in the powerplay and variations in the death overs.”

Derek Bowden, Chief Executive at Essex Cricket wanted to reiterate and reassure fans that all of the correct procedures had been followed, saying: “This was very much an unforeseen circumstance.

“The Club have done everything within their power to support and complete the process undertaken by the player and his agent in a timely fashion.

“It is unfortunate that Mohammad missed two matches that he was hoping to play, but now we are pleased that we can focus on the Vitality Blast and plotting our way to Edgbaston.”
