Match Preview: Essex v Somerset

Essex meet Somerset on Sunday at The Cloudfm County Ground in what promises to be a mouth-watering clash.

The visitors are currently top of Division One and are so far unbeaten in the competition, having won five of their six matches.

Essex have named a 13-man squad for Sunday’s match which includes Peter Siddle, who is expected to have recovered from the niggle that forced him to miss the win over Hampshire earlier this week.

However, Sam Cook is now an absentee. The 21-year-old right-arm seamer sustained a side injury whilst bowling during that match and has undergone a scan to discover the full extent of the injury.

Essex Head Coach Anthony McGrath said: “Sunday’s match is a massive game for us. Like ourselves, they are winning games and they have been the form team of the season so far in both red-ball and 50-overs cricket.

“They have also won in low-scoring games, so it looks to be a great game in prospect between two in-form teams who are now going head-to-head.

“We’ve got four games in as many weeks which is going to be a big ask on the lads and we are going to need all the squad.”

McGrath will hope that off-spinner Simon Harmer can continue his rich vein of form that has seen him bag 42 wickets this year in the Championship, with 31 of those in just three matches at Chelmsford.

McGrath added: “He is an exceptional talent, he’s a magic man and the complete spinner. He is dangerous on any surface and if he gets the slightest bit of encouragement, he seems to exploit the conditions expertly.

“Each batsman will have their own ideas of how to play him, but he seems to have an answer for most of them.

“It won’t always be like that of course, we know things go in cycles but, at the moment, he’s hot and long may that continue.”

Essex squad to face Somerset:

Ryan ten Doeschate (27) (captain)
Aaron Beard (14)
Ravi Bopara (25)
Nick Browne (10)
Varun Chopra (6)
Alastair Cook (26)
Simon Harmer (11)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Jamie Porter (44)
Matt Quinn (94)
Peter Siddle (64)
Tom Westley (21)
Adam Wheater (31) (wicket-keeper)

Gooch Impressed By Harmer Performance

Simon Harmer continued his devastating form by bowling Essex to their third home victory in as many matches on Monday, as they wrapped up proceedings against Hampshire inside two days.

The South African has now taken 31 Championship wickets at The Cloudfm County Ground this season, which has taken his overall Championship count to 42 for the summer, the highest of any bowler in the country.

His latest stunning performance was witnessed by Essex legend Graham Gooch. The former England and Essex captain, who played alongside and faced the best spinners on the international scene, paid this appreciation to the 30-year-old.

Gooch said: “He is one of the best spinners I’ve seen in recent years. I was very impressed with him from day one and I’m surprised that he hadn’t played more international cricket because he has every aspect of a top-class cricketer.

“He’s a great role model in the dressing room and obviously has got good craft, has good control, spins the ball and has got great variation and good temperament so yes, he has got all the attributes.

“And all that bears itself out in his returns. His performance against Hampshire on Monday was majestic.”

Injury Update: Sam Cook

Essex bowler Sam Cook, who left the field during Hampshire’s second innings on Monday, has sustained a side injury.

Four balls into his second over, the 21-year-old pulled up and had to leave the field, with Simon Harmer bowling the two remaining deliveries.

Cook is to undergo a scan later today to discover the full extent of the injury.

Essex’s wicket-keeping problems have been boosted by the return Adam Wheater, who featured against Hampshire for the first time since injuring his thumb in the reverse fixture on the opening day of the 2019 season.

Wheater has now fully recovered and is back to full fitness ahead of a busy schedule in both the Specsavers County Championship and the Vitality Blast.

Essex Cricket Extend Partnership With DeVines

Essex Cricket are delighted to announce that DeVines have extended their partnership with the Club and will remain as our Official Player of the Month sponsor for a further two seasons.

Darrell Fox, Commercial Manager at Essex Cricket, is delighted to see the partnership with DeVines continue and said: “DeVines have given us their full support both on and off the pitch over the last few years, and the enthusiasm they have shown for our Club has been outstanding. Those are just two aspects of why this relationship is so successful and why we’re looking forward to working together more in the future.”

Clive Purdy, Director of DeVines, said: “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed being involved with Essex Cricket over the past couple of years and it’s a relationship that has grown and grown. Extending our partnership with the Club was an easy decision and we’re excited about prolonging this entertaining relationship.”

About DeVines:

DeVines are a long-established firm of Chartered Accounts based in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, who’s goal is to provide a friendly and expert service to their clients. DeVines cater for those who have simple personal tax affairs up to large SME’s who require a full accountancy and advice service.

Simon Harmer Wins DeVines Player Of The Month

Simon Harmer has been named the DeVines Player of the Month for May after picking up 89% of the votes, beating Varun Chopra, Alastair Cook and Jamie Porter to the award.

The South African was excellent with the ball during May, taking 19 Championship wickets in just two matches. In the first game against Nottinghamshire, Harmer took 8 wickets and was instrumental as Essex won by 8 wickets. The following week against Kent, the spinner somehow improved and took 11 wickets, with 8 of them coming in the second innings. In that second innings, he bowled 32.5 overs and recorded 8 maidens whilst going at a notable economy of 2.99.

His outstanding performances also saw him named the PCA Player of the Month for May.

Match Report: England v West Indies

Amy Jones celebrated her 26th birthday in style in Chelmsford, scoring 80 runs and picking up the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards as England Women completed a Royal London One-Day Series clean-sweep of the West Indies.

Jones put on 84 with Tammy Beaumont (46) for the first wicket and 87 with Sarah Taylor for the second before an excellent catch in the deep by Britney Cooper saw her dismissed.

Taylor kept the run rate high, hitting 70 off 61 balls to see England past the 200 mark and to take her personal tally past 4,000 runs in ODI cricket. Some ferocious hitting by captain Heather Knight (40* off 19 balls) took the total to 258/4 from the rain-adjusted 39 overs.

Set 267 to win from 39 overs the West Indies innings started in jaw-dropping fashion. Hayley Matthews hit a huge six over long-on in the second over but then fell to a stunning diving catch by Fran Wilson at cover the very next ball.

Debutant Bryony Smith picked up her first international wicket with the dismissal of Natasha McLean and finished with 1/20 from eight overs as the visitors’ chase failed to gain momentum.

The win gives England their 13th in a row in all competitions and, more importantly, moves them a step closer to qualification to the 2021 ICC Women’s World Cup. England move to the top of the ICC Women’s Championship with 24 points.
