Walter named in ECB Winter Pace Programme

Essex fast bowler Paul Walter has been named in the ECB’s winter Pace Programme.

He is joined by Tom Barber of Middlesex, Josh Tongue, George Scrimshaw and Leicestershire’s Zak Chappell – with the more experienced pair of Reece Topley and Jamie Overton to join the Programme as part of their back to bowling schedule following back injuries.

The Programme will be led by Kevin Shine, the ECB’s lead fast-bowling coach, and he will be assisted by Matt Mason, the Worcestershire assistant and fast bowling coach.

In addition to the opportunity for warm-weather training in South Africa early next year at the High Performance Institute for Sport at North West University’s Potchefstroom campus, the bowlers will also make two trips to the Desert Springs resort in southern Spain.

After splitting their time between their counties and the Performance Centre through October and November, the Pace Programme will head for Spain from December 9-14, and again from February 27 – March 3, after their return from South Africa.

The Young Lions squad will also hold a three-day camp at Desert Springs next month before travelling to South Africa for a Tri-Series also including Namibia, and the Lions will prepare for their trip to West Indies early next year with a camp in Spain from January 20-25.

The first of the five ECB camps being held in Spain this winter will involve the England Women’s Academy, from October 19-26. England’s Physical Disability team are also planning a camp for next spring.

Pace Programme 2017-18: Tom Barber (Middlesex), Zak Chappell (Leicestershire), George Scrimshaw (Worcestershire), Josh Tongue (Worcestershire), Paul Walter (Essex). Porter celebrates with two PCA awards

Jamie Porter has been named as the PCA Young Player of the Year & Specsavers County Championship Player of the Year at the PCA Awards evening this evening. Porter fought off competition from Jofra Archer (Sussex), Ben Coad (Yorkshire) and Craig Overton (Somerset) to win the Young Players’ award.

Simon Harmer joined Jamie in the PCA Team of the Year, after finishing second in the Championship wicket takers rankings this season.

However, after being nominated, Jamie Porter wasn’t triumphant in the NatWest PCA Players’ Player of the Year voting with Nottinghamshire all-rounder Samit Patel picking up the accolade.

Patel was presented with the Reg Hayter Cup at the 48th NatWest PCA Awards at the Roundhouse in London, one of 13 awards presented on the night.

Patel faced competition from Surrey’s retiring former Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara, Glamorgan all-rounder Colin Ingram and Essex seamer Jamie Porter for the NatWest PCA Players’ Player Award but Porter did collect two prizes, winning the John Arlott Cup for the NatWest PCA Young Player of the Year Award and the Specsavers County Championship Player of the Year.

Patel said, “I’m a little bit surprised actually. To be up there with a world class player like Sanga, with the amount of runs that he scored in a short amount of time, is a privilege in itself.

“Jamie has had a wonderful year. Essex have won Division One and he has been the stand-out bowler in the First Division.

“It’s a great achievement for all four shortlisted nominees so I’m very pleased. I’ve never been up there for Players’ Player before so to win it is unreal really. I’m really happy and chuffed to bits.”

Porter, who faced competition from fellow seamers Jofra Archer (Sussex), Ben Coad (Yorkshire) and Craig Overton (Somerset) for the NatWest PCA Young Player Award, took 75 wickets to help Essex, who were promoted as Second Division champions 12 months ago, win their first Specsavers County Championship title in 25 years.

He returned career-best innings and match best bowling figures – seven for 55 and 12 for 95 – against Somerset at Chelmsford in August and also won the Specsavers County Championship Player of the Year Award.

“For other players around the country to give their seal of approval means a lot to me and makes this award special,” Porter said.

Porter will head to Australia with England Lions next month but it is only three years since his dreams of playing county cricket appeared to be over when he was not picked up by a county after he had finished with the MCC Young Cricketers so he went to work for a recruitment company.

“I spent six months working in recruitment and I thought that’s where I would be for a long time,” he said.

“I enjoyed it but, coming back into cricket, it means that I don’t play with any fear now. There are a lot of guys who are afraid that if cricket doesn’t work out they don’t know where they are going to go.

“If I get injured or have a bad season I would be more than happy in the outside world. I want to play cricket for as a long as I can but I know that I can survive if that fails.”

The PCA’s 50th Anniversary was also celebrated with the presentation of the PCA Lifetime Achievement Award to founder Fred Rumsey.

An organisation to represent the players’ interests was the brainchild of the former England, Worcestershire, Somerset and Derbyshire left-arm paceman and it was Rumsey who was the driving force behind the first meeting of what became the Cricketers’ Association in London on September 4 1967.

The Investec Test and Royal London One Day International Players of the Summer were also presented with Jimmy Anderson ending a memorable summer with the Test award and Joe Root winning the 50-over prize after they finished top of the PCA MVP Rankings in the respective formats.

Patel, Porter, Ingram, Sangakkara and Overton were all included in the PCA Team of the Year, which comprised the top performers in red and white ball domestic cricket according to the PCA MVP Rankings.

“The 2017 NatWest PCA Awards are a fitting finale to what has been an exceptional summer of cricket in the PCA’s 50th Anniversary year. From a team perspective, Essex winning the Specsavers County Championship in the first year back in the top division and Nottinghamshire winning both major one-day trophies, while gaining promotion after relegation last year, have been fantastic achievements,” said David Leatherdale, PCA Chief Executive.

“The international summer proved to be another successful one with Joe Root, in his first year leading the Test side, and Eoin Morgan leading England to impressive victories over South Africa and the West Indies. However, our England Women’s team winning the World Cup in front of a sell-out 27,000 home crowd at Lord’s will live long in the memory as the highlight of the cricketing summer.

“All our individual winners fully deserve the accolades and praise they will receive and there is no higher praise than to be voted for by all your team-mates and your peers. Each winner should rightly be proud of their achievements.

“In our 50th Anniversary year it is only fitting that our Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to one of our founding members, Fred Rumsey. His courage and determination some 50 years ago has enabled the PCA to become the respected organisation it is today.”

Sam Cook signs first professional contract

Essex opening bowler Sam Cook, has put pen-to-paper on his first professional contract with the Club.

Following his recent emergence onto the First-Team scene, Cook has committed his future to his home County and signed a two-year contract until 2019.

The 20-year-old made his Essex debut against Lancashire at Old Trafford in September and went on to take 18 wickets in four matches, including back-to-back five-wicket hauls against Hampshire and Yorkshire respectively.

Current Loughborough University student Cook, is struggling to get his head round the past month and said: “To be honest the last few weeks or so have been a bit of a blur but it has been absolutely incredible.

“Making my debut for Essex was something I always dreamed of and then to go on and be a part of winning the Division One title was something you can’t really put into words. I worked hard to get in that position, but the hard work doesn’t stop now and being rewarded with this contract has given me a hunger to make just as big an impact next season.

“For now, I will continue to train with Loughborough MCCU and finish my degree, but then my focus will fully be on impressing for Essex and following in the footsteps of the likes of Jamie Porter.”

Head Coach Chris Silverwood is thrilled for Cook and added: “Sam has shown just what can be achieved with the right attitude and a willingness to work hard. He waited patiently for his opportunity and certainly took it when he came into the side.

“The most important thing now is that he stays grounded and continues to work just as hard as he has done in his short career so far. If he does that, he certainly has the skills to be a huge asset for Essex for years to come.”

Lawrence, Porter and Westley all named in Lions squad for Australia tour

Three of the stars of Essex’s triumphant season in the Specsavers County Championship have been rewarded by selection in the Lions squad for a training camp in Australia in November and December.

Dan Lawrence, Jamie Porter and Tom Westley, who all played for England Lions this summer, are included in a 17-man party which will be based first in Brisbane, and then in Perth.

In addition Chris Silverwood, the head coach of the county champions, will join the Lions for a second consecutive winter, as fast bowling coach – with Adam Hollioake, the former Surrey and England captain, also appointed as fielding coach.

Westley is one of three members of the squad who played Test cricket this summer, with Keaton Jennings and Mark Wood also selected.

Ben Duckett completes a quartet of players with Test caps, and the Lancashire all-rounder Liam Livingstone is the fifth member of the squad with senior international experience.

Porter and Lawrence made their debuts for the Lions this summer and the England selectors have included four players yet to play for the Lions – Dom Bess, Paul Coughlin, Alex Davies and Amar Virdi – although both Bess and Virdi spent time training with the Lions squad in the summer, and Coughlin played in the North-South Series earlier this year.

James Whitaker, the National Selector, said: “This camp provides an opportunity for emerging young talent and some players with international experience to work hard on their game in Australia, in excellent facilities, under the guidance of Andy Flower and our other lead coaches. The players selected have a range of experience, and we believe they are an exciting group.

“This is a great chance for them to impress, before we select another Lions squad for the games against West Indies A in the second half of the winter. We would expect a number of other players to be in contention for that squad – for example Haseeb Hameed was not considered for the Australia camp to avoid him having to rush back from the injury he suffered recently playing for Lancashire.”

The Lions will spend a week at the Performance Centre in Loughborough before flying to Brisbane on November 14, for a two-week camp with a red-ball focus culminating in a three-day match against a Queensland XI at the Allan Border Oval from November 27-29 – although this will not be an official England Lions fixture.

They then head west to Perth for two weeks focusing on white-ball skills during which they will play three T20 matches against a Scorchers team who will be preparing for the Big Bash.

The Lions squad for a seven-week trip to the West Indies in 2018, including three four-day matches and three 50-over fixtures, will be selected in December, along with the squads for the North-South Series which follows in Barbados in March.

Lions: Dom Bess (Somerset), Joe Clarke (Worcestershire), Paul Coughlin (Durham/Nottinghamshire), Alex Davies (Lancashire), Ben Duckett (Northamptonshire), George Garton (Sussex), Nick Gubbins (Middlesex), Tom Helm (Middlesex), Keaton Jennings (Durham/Lancashire), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Jack Leach (Somerset), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire), Jamie Porter (Essex), Amar Virdi (Surrey), Tom Westley (Essex), Mark Wood (Durham).

Winter dates:

November 14 – depart for Australia.

November 15-29 – Brisbane, including three-day match against a Queensland XI at Allan Border Oval from 27-29

Jack Plom named in Young Lions squad for tour of South Africa

Essex Academy star Jack Plom has been named in the Young Lions squad for the winter tour of South Africa.

Four Middlesex youngsters are among eight new faces in an 18-man Young Lions squad that has been selected for the first half of the winter programme.

Ethan Bamber, Jack Davies, Luke Hollman and Savin Perera have been selected after impressing last summer, three of them for London and East in the Super-4s competition for the country’s outstanding Under-17s.

Glamorgan also contribute two new faces – left-arm spinner Prem Sisodiya and Roman Walker, a fast bowler from Wrexham.

Tom Scriven joins his Hampshire team-mate Felix Organ, and Dillon Pennington joins his fellow Worcestershire fast bowler Adam Finch.

The remaining eight players in the squad were all involved in the summer internationals against India: Tom Banton, Tom Lammonby and Fin Trenouth of Somerset; Warwickshire opener Liam Banks; Yorkshire batsman Harry Brook; Will Jacks of Surrey; and Derbyshire spinner Hamidullah Qadri.

Three seamers who featured for England Under-19s against India – Warwickshire’s Henry Brookes, Ben Allison of Essex and the Durham all-rounder Matt Potts – have been ruled out by injury.

Andy Hurry, the head coach of the Young Lions programme, has been confirmed today as the new director of cricket at Somerset.

David Parsons, the ECB’s Performance Director, said: “Andy has played a key role in the development of our Young Lions programme and the wider Player Pathway since he was appointed head coach of the England Development Programme in September 2014, and on behalf of the ECB and also the many young players who have benefited from his energy and expertise over the last three years, I’d like to thank him for his work – and wish him good luck at Somerset.

“We have already begun the process of finding a replacement in what is a busy and challenging winter for the Young Lions, with a Tri-Series in South Africa before Christmas followed by the ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand early in the New Year.”
