Essex’s second-string suffered a 7-wicket defeat to Hampshire 2nd XI on their return to Second XI Championship action at Billericay CC.
Aaron Beard’s half-century was the highlight of the Essex first innings. The 23-year-old reached his half-century off 81 balls during a 126-minute stint at the crease. Former contracted batsman, Kishen Velani featured in the game and hit 47 – Michael Booth taking 3/24 for the visitors.
Fletcha Middleton’s 76 contributed to Hampshire establishing a useful lead, along with Toby Albert (47) and Charlie Mumford (40) who were also amongst the runs. Aaron Beard also impressed with the ball, taking 4/77, while Eshun Kalley claimed 3/34.
Nick Browne and Michael Pepper both passed 50, while Felix Organ’s 6/82 kept the contest in the balance. And so it proved as Hampshire, driven by a stylish unbeaten 105 off 157 deliveries from Tom Scriven, eased to victory. Albert contributed 63, as Essex’s Ben Waring took 2/62 for the beaten home side.
