Charlie Allison provided the highlight, scoring an impressive century during Essex’s Second XI Championship defeat at the hands of their Hampshire counterparts at Castle Park, Colchester.

 

Allison’s second innings knock of 124 came off 152 balls. His 208-minutes at the crease gleaned fifteen 4s, three 6s and was his second ton at this level, following his 102 during Essex’s victory over Middlesex at Billericay last month.

 

Earlier in the contest, it was the Hampshire attack that had starred. Ian Holland returned figures of 14-3-32-4, while Scott Currie had 12.2-2-50-3 as Essex were restricted to 156.

 

Allison again impressed, top-scoring with 40, while Will Buttleman contributed 36. Hampshire then built a sizable lead, with wicketkeeper/batter Ben Brown scoring 75 and Aneurin Donald 70. Eshan Kalley took three for 57 from eleven overs. Zak Evans claimed 3/95 while there was a brace for Jamal Richards.

 

Faced with a huge task Allison’s heroics were backed up by Naivedyam Dwivedi (55), Omar Akram (48) and skipper Nick Browne (48). Matthew Burton and Felix Organ each took three wickets apiece for the visitors.

 

Hampshire chased down their target within 38 overs, with Fletcha Middleton scoring a half-century. Richards was again amongst the wickets but this time in vain as Essex were beaten by seven wickets.
