Warwickshire v Essex

LV= Insurance County Championship
Edgbaston Stadium, Birmingham
Thursday 21 – Sunday 24 April
11am start

After a nail-biting first win of the season at Somerset, Essex travel to Birmingham to take on last year’s LV= Insurance County Championship Division One title winners, Warwickshire.

In a low-scoring encounter, Essex successfully chased down the 84 runs required for victory. New signing Adam Rossington shepherded the side home with a nerveless 29 after Shane Snater ran through Somerset’s batting line-up in the second innings, claiming 6/36.

Essex took 19 points from the fixture and will start tomorrow’s game second in the table on 31 points.

Squad:

After the return of Simon Harmer for last week’s fixture against Somerset, Essex will once again travel will a full-strength squad.

The one change to the squad sees Paul Walter, fresh from his century for the Second XI, come in for Michael Pepper.

ESS v WAR

The Opposition:

Warwickshire had a 2021 season to remember, finishing top of Division One in the LV= Insurance County Championship and becoming the second side, after Essex, to win the Bob Willis Trophy.

Their only game so far this season ended in a draw against Surrey on a batter-friendly Edgbaston pitch.

In a game where Surrey scored 471 runs for the loss of just eight wickets, Oliver Hannon-Dalby was the standout bowler picking up 4/78. He was well assisted by Danny Briggs who took 3/84.

Both Matt Lamb (106) and Michael Burgess (178) come into the fixture fresh from centuries against Surrey. In this case of Lamb it was the second of his career, his first coming against Essex at the same ground in 2019.

Warwickshire Squad: Will Rhodes (c), Chris Benjamin, Danny Briggs, Henry Brookes, Michael Burgess (wk), Alex Davies, Sam Hain, Oliver Hannon-Dalby, Matt Lamb, Craig Miles, Liam Norwell, Dom Sibley, Rob Yates.

Last time out:

The last time two team’s faced in red-ball cricket was at Chelmsford in May of last year.

The game, ruined by the weather, ended in a draw despite a standout performance from Peter Siddle, who took 6/38 as Warwickshire were bowled out for 166 in their first innings.

In response, Essex reached 217 thanks to half centuries from Alastair Cook and Ryan ten Doeschate and looked in a strong position with a first innings lead of 51 and a bowling unit with their tails up.

However, any hopes for a positive result were ended by persistent rain and both sides had to settle for a draw.

How To Watch:

Our Live Stream service will be available across all four days of this game from 10:30am, which also includes player stats, scorecards and clips throughout the day.

Middlesex 2nd XI: 239

Match Report

Essex 2nd XI returned to 50-over action with a friendly against Norfolk. The match developed into a comprehensive victory for Essex with a 122-run victory in Billericay.

The dominance was there from the start for Essex with a marvellous 271-run opening partnership from Aron Nijjar and Paul Walter.

Both openers scored hundreds with Paul Walter ending on a run-a-ball 108. This came after Aron Nijjar had scored 158 off just 128 balls with a strike rate of 123.40.

However, both openers were eventually taken in subsequent Ben Coote overs. As a result, this brought Captain, Josh Rymell to the crease but it was a short stay before he was run out by former Essex player, Sam Arthurton. This allowed Robin Das and Will Buttleman to increase the run-rate towards the end of the innings with both batters finishing with 150+ strike-rates to help the side to a first-innings score of 361-5.

Norfolk’s reply didn’t get off to the greatest start with Aaron Beard trapping the Norfolk skipper, Arthurton, leg before with the first legal delivery of the game. Jason Reynolds and Freddie Fairey steadied the ship for the visitors; with Fairey taking it to the Essex attack with his 52 coming off 42 balls before being caught and bowled by Jamal Richards.

Cooper and Rogers helped the score past 150 before a couple of wickets each for Dwivedi and Hassen took Norfolk from 180-3 to 187-7. After Dwivedi had picked up the wicket of Ben Coote for 32, Norfolk’s resistance was all but over ending up bowled out for 239 – Dwivedi was the pick of the bowlers finishing with match-best figures of 3-43 off 10 overs.

Essex Second XI’s next game is against Kent starting on Monday 25 April for a Second XI Championship game, where they look to bounce back from defeat against Middlesex in the first game.

Match Report

Essex endured a difficult opening to their Second XI Championship campaign as their Middlesex counterparts roared to a ten-wicket victory inside two days at Radlett.

The writing was on the wall from the start for Essex. Robin Das followed up some impressive pre-season performances with a half-century. However, Jamal Richards was the only other visiting batter to reach double figures. Essex were largely reliant on a sizable amount of extras to reach 150 – Ishaan Kaushal was the pick of the Middlesex bowlers with 4/32.

Max Holden (34), Joe Cracknell (33) and Martin Andersson (31) provided the platform for Middlesex’s 108-run first-innings lead. Paul Walter impressed with the ball, taking 4/19, while there were three wickets for Ben Allison.

Middlesex continued to dominate. Thilan Walallawita took 3/20 as Essex were dismissed inside 37 overs for 114. Das again led the way for the Essex batters with 23 on what proved to be a tough examination – Kaushal, Andersson and Toby Greatwood with two apiece for the Seaxes.

It took Middlesex just five balls to secure victory, Holden with the decisive runs.

Essex will now take on Middlesex in a 40-over aside friendly match on Thursday 14 April at Radlett, with play starting at 11am.

Somerset v Essex

LV= Insurance County Championship
The Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton
Thursday 14 – Sunday 17 April
11am start

After a blustery draw against Kent last week, which was dominated by the bat, Essex look to improve and target the first win of this LV= Insurance County Championship season.

Tomorrow’s game against Somerset, which gets underway at 11am, sees Essex build on a good game with the bat last time out, which saw 3 hundreds, including a great first innings knock by Matt Critchley, who scored 132 (179) and a 220-run opening partnership from centurions Nick Browne and Alastair Cook.

The team will have been given a boost after seeing Somerset’s first result of the season, which saw them lose by an innings and 113 runs, away at Hampshire.

Squad:

Essex’s shrewd recruitment seemed to pay off in the first game of the season, with new addition Matt Critchley starring with both bat and ball.

His performance was backed up by another recent addition in Adam Rossington, who scored 41 (52) in a captivating innings that was only cut short due to a snorter from Darren Stevens.

Mark Steketee was also able to get used to unfamiliar conditions as he bowled his first 29 overs in England.

There’s one change to the squad that played against Kent with Simon Harmer coming in for Aaron Beard. Harmer missed the first game of the season due to his selection in the South Africa Test side for their series with Bangladesh.

The Opposition:

Somerset finished last season at the bottom of Division One, losing all four games after finishing top of Group 3.

Essex fans will see a familiar face in the Somerset ranks in Peter Siddle, who has joined the West-Country side for the 2022 campaign.

The 37-year-old had a three-year stint at Chelmsford, taking 91 wickets and becoming a favourite with the crowd at The Cloud County Ground.

Somerset Squad: Ben Green, Tom Lammonby, Matt Renshaw, Tom Abell (c), James Hildreth, Lewis Goldsworthy, Steve Davies (wk), Lewis Gregory, Craig Overton, Peter Siddle, Jack Leach, Jack Brooks and Kasey Aldridge.

Last time out:

The last time two team’s faced in red-ball cricket was in September 2020 in the Bob Willis Trophy Final at Lord’s, in which Essex came out on top.

After a remarkable 172 from England’s all-time leading run scorer, Alastair Cook, supported by captain Tom Westley, Essex gained a first-innings advantage of 36. Westley’s side were tormented by the Somerset batters in the second innings, with Lammonby scoring 116 (151), before declaring at 272-7, leaving Essex with 236 to win.

In the end, time ran out and the game ended in the draw, with Essex lifting the Bob Willis Trophy having secured a first innings advantage.

Second XI Season Gets Underway for 2022

The return of cricket for the Second XI is here with the release of the fixtures and opening fixture against Middlesex this week. Essex will be fighting on both fronts for the four day Second XI Championship and Second XI T20 Trophy this season.

Starting the season with trips away to Cobden Hill, Foxgrove Road and the London School of Economics for three four-day games against Middlesex, Kent and Surrey, respectively. The later against Surrey was an immense game for the Essex batsman last year with both openers in Varun Chopra (109) and Will Buttleman (112) scoring hundreds, resulting in an outstanding opening partnership of over 200, this backed up with 50s by Aaron Beard (78), Michael Pepper (77) and Josh Rymell (64) all combined to ending in a devastating victory of an innings and 150 runs for Essex.

After this, Essex move their focus onto the Second XI T20 Cup across May, during which they will play ten games against our five rivals in the Southeast: Surrey, Sussex, Middlesex, Kent and Hampshire, who were the recipients of two of Essex’s four wins in the competition last year. This being due to a remarkable hundred by Will Buttleman (102*) off just 64 balls in the home game.

The winners and best second placed side from across the three groups attending a Finals Day at Arundel on 9th June.

The second XI four-day championship then recommences for five games on June 20th with a home tie at Billericay against Sussex, who managed to avoid defeat last year after Essex declared for 477/6, thanks to a double hundred by Varun Chopra (211) backed up by Josh Rymell with 103. This was before Essex managed to enforce the follow-on but narrowly miss out on the win with Sussex managing to bat out the remainder of play.

Following a six week break while both The Hundred and Royal London One-Day Cup are played simultaneously; the Second XI Championship concludes with two games against Warwickshire at the Edgbaston Foundation Sports Ground (5th September) and Middlesex in Billericay (13th September).
