Essex 50s eyeing a unique treble

Having successfully defended their CB 50+ County Championship title in 2021, the Essex Senior side are eyeing up a unique treble this summer.

Head Coach, Peter Rider insisted his side are in good shape, saying: “We are looking forward to defending our National title, and will be aiming to make the Final at Arundel to compete for what would be an unprecedented ECB treble.”

Essex made a terrific start to the 2021 season, winning six of their seven group matches to reach the knockout stages.

Berkshire, Cambridge and Hampshire were edged out in tough encounters. However, the Final proved to be a little more straightforward as Essex cruised to victory over Lancashire with 36 balls to spare.

Mel Hussain led the side with great enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Giles Ecclestone of Saffron Walden hit 775 runs at an incredible rate of 155 and Wanstead’s Mo Fayaz claimed 20 wickets at an impressive average of 14.75, with an economy rate of 3.78. Both players also excelled for England 50+ in the majority of the 2021 Internationals fixtures.

The Australian Eagles

Since the inception of the T20 format into the domestic calendar, a handful of Australians have joined the Essex ranks to represent the county in that form of the game. With Daniel Sams becoming the latest of the men from down under to join the Club, we look back at a number of his compatriots who have worn the colours of Essex in T20 cricket.

With a reputation as one of the most potent of bowlers in T20 cricket, Shaun Tait enjoyed two seasons with Essex and underlined his rating with some lethal displays.

Born in February 1983, he first played for the Eagles in 2013 when he helped the side reach Finals Daym taking 18 wickets during the campaign at an average of 17.18 with best figures of 4/26 against Sussex at Chelmsford.

In the Quarter-Final match with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, he returned figures of 4/29 that included a spectacular hat-trick to reduce the opposition to 139-9, and one run later, Essex completed victory by 47 runs. One of his victims was the vital scalp of his fellow Aussie David Hussey, who had looked a serious threat when moving to 61 before he was caught by Ryan ten Doeschate. However, the dreams of Tait and Essex to reach their first Final were scuppered by Northamptonshire in the Semi-Final.

The Adelaide-born right-arm fast bowler returned in 2015 and made another significant contribution with 23 wickets at 19.34, assisting the County to the Quarter-Final stage when Warwickshire beat them.

His overall tally of 39 wickets for the Eagles in his 26 matches spread over two stints were achieved at an average of 18.46 and an economy rate of 7.70.

International all-rounder Andy Bichel was the next Aussie to don the Essex colours having signed a two-year contract as an Overseas player for all forms of the game. The right-arm medium-fast bowler was born in Queensland in 1970 and Bichel’s outstanding form during two spells at the Club made him a firm favourite with the Chelmsford crowd.

He made his T20 debut in 2006 and was the leading wicket-taker with 14 victims, assisting Essex to Finals Day before being eliminated in the Semi-Final by Leicestershire. He returned the following year making an overall total of 18 appearances in the competition. He claimed 22 wickets at 23.72 and an economy rate of 7.67.

Playing against Sussex at Chelmsford in 2006, the popular Australian took 4/23, his best T20 figures for the side, as the Eagles eased to an 87-run success.

Although a capable lower-order batter who scored a century for Essex in four-day cricket, his output with the bat in T20 accounted for 104 runs at 11.55.

When he left, Chief Executive David East paid this tribute, saying: “Andy has been a fantastic Overseas player for Essex, not only putting in match-winning performances on the field but also being a consummate professional off it.

“He has been a constant source of encouragement to the young players and his general influence on the whole dressing room has been fantastic.”

Scott Brant paved the way for Australian representation with the Eagles when he played in the first two years of the new competition in 2003 and 2004.

He was born in Harare, Zimbabwe but qualified to play for Australia and was only 20 years old when he linked with Essex to play as the second Overseas player available for all formats.

A left-arm seamer, he had only made his first-class debut for Queensland in 2002 and was named in Australia’s Under-19 World Cup but was subsequently denied the opportunity to represent his adopted country because he had not met the ICC residential qualifications in time.

Injury affected his initial year with the County and then when he returned for his second season, he struggled to find form. His 9 T20 matches for the Eagles over the two seasons brought him 11 wickets at 21.90 and an acceptable economy rate of 7.69.

His best return for the Eagles came in the match against Kent at Maidstone in 2004, when he recorded figures of 4/20, helping his side to an 8 wicket victory. With the bat, Brant was a tail-ender and only made three trips to the middle scoring 6 runs.

Peter Siddle made just 6 T20 appearances in an Eagles shirt during his time with the Club and those all occurred in 2018. The engaging personality only bowled 16 overs in T20 cricket for the Eagles and took just 3 wickets that proved expensive at an average cost of 50.67 and an economy rate of 9.50.

He will be fondly remembered though for his contribution that brought the County Championship title to Chelmsford in 2019.

When Siddle departed in 2021, Essex Head Coach Anthony McGrath said: “He’s a great figure in the dressing room and a leader on the field. He’s been amazing with the younger bowlers and has always offered support and advice, and when playing he’s contributed with some important wickets.

“He’s a fierce competitor and always gives it his all, but we wish him nothing but the best.”

Having started his domestic career with New South Wales and subsequently becoming a multi-format international for his country, leg-spinner Adam Zampa proved an effective and shrewd signing for the Eagles for whom he spent two seasons representing them in T20 cricket.

Born in 1992, he captured the attention during his first stint in 2018 when, in 10 matches, he claimed 12 wickets at 20.75 and an economy rate of 7.90 and was their stand-out bowler.

He achieved his best Essex figures during the season returning 3/17 vs Glamorgan at Chelmsford in 2018.

The next term, Zampa bagged another 12 wickets in a dozen matches, these victims coating 28.92 apiece whilst his economy rate was 8.07. He was part of the side that overcame Lancashire in the T20 Quarter-Final tie with Lancashire at Chester-Le-Street but then domestic commitments in Australia ruled him out of Finals Day and a part in the County’s first T20 title win.

However, his efforts for the Eagles during their historic success were acknowledged when he appeared in team photos courtesy of a cardboard cut-out!

Daniel Sams signs for Vitality Blast campaign

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce the signing of Australian all-rounder Daniel Sams for the 2022 Vitality Blast campaign. Sams will be available for the Eagles upon completion of his stint in the IPL, which is due to culminate on May 29.

29-year-old Sams, a tall left-arm quick and big-hitting batter, has risen to prominence in recent years, with three of his seven international T20 appearances coming in Sri Lanka’s tour of Australia last month.

After signing for Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) in 2018, he has become a leading figure in a strong team, helping turn the franchise’s fortunes around. The Thunder have reached the finals of the Big Bash in three out of four seasons since Sams’ arrival, having only reached the finals once out of the previous seven.

Sams’ tally of 75 wickets makes him Sydney Thunder’s all-time leading wicket-taker and his 30 wickets in BBL09 was more than any other bowler. He also boasts a T20 high score of 98 not out, an innings of just 44 balls which included seven 4s and eight 6s.

His next appearance on the world stage will be in the Indian Premier League where he’ll turn out for Mumbai Indians, who signed him after a bidding war against Lucknow Super Giants.

On his signing for the Eagles, Sams said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to be part of Essex Eagles for the T20 Blast this season.

“It is exciting to join a Club with such a long and rich history and I look forward to joining the players, coaching staff and supporters and contributing on and off the field to the team’s success.”

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath commented: “I’m very pleased to secure the signing of Dan for the upcoming Vitality Blast campaign.

“He’s such a versatile player and has consistently been one of the top performers in the Big Bash in recent years.

“His left-arm angle is so effective in T20 cricket, but he also possesses an excellent change of pace which makes him a real handful. He will also add some firepower to our batting unit, and he hits a long ball.”

Essex Cricket CEO & Interim Chair, John Stephenson added: “Dan is a player of great pedigree and Anthony, along with the rest of his team, were very keen to get him in for the Blast campaign.

“We’re looking to improve on last year’s performance in the shortest format and adding Dan to the squad will help give impetus to the progression of our T20 side.”

ECB appoint five umpires to new Professional Umpires’ Team

Five umpires have been added to the newly-established Professional Umpires’ Team who will officiate in men’s and women’s matches across England and Wales.

Naeem Ashraf, Anthony Harris, Sue Redfern, Surendiran Shanmugam and Jack Shantry join the new 34-person Professional Umpires’ Team, which has been established following an independent review into officiating carried out last year.

The independent review sought to understand how the ECB can continue to best attract, appoint, develop, performance manage and evaluate match officials from all backgrounds.

One of the key recommendations was to create a single pool of umpires to replace the previous system which saw a First-Class Panel of umpires, backed up by a part-time Reserve Panel.

Members of the Professional Umpires’ Team are available to stand in women’s professional cricket (Women’s Regional competitions and The Hundred) and men’s professional cricket (County Second XI, Royal London Cup, Vitality Blast, The Hundred and LV= Insurance County Championship).

All members of the Professional Umpires’ Team will now have the support to allow them to concentrate solely on umpiring as a career.

Redfern, currently in New Zealand where she is officiating at the ICC Women’s World Cup, will continue to be available to officiate women’s international cricket in addition to the opportunities her appointment to the Professional Umpires’ Team will provide.

The five appointments are all promoted from the National Panel of umpires and showcase the value of a clear pathway into professional ranks.

Former Worcestershire left-armer Shantry (Shropshire) has developed as an umpire in recreational cricket following his retirement as a player in 2017 and joins former Pakistan international Ashraf (Lancashire), Harris (Shropshire) and Shanmugam (Northamptonshire) who, like Redfern (Staffordshire), have been appointed following a recruitment process overseen by the new diverse Officiating Oversight Panel.

Their appointments come following the retirements of Jeff Evans (2019), Jeremy Lloyds (2019), Ian Gould (2021) and Ian Ramage (2021) and ensure a full list of umpires for the new season.

ECB Managing Director of County Cricket, Neil Snowball, said: “The appointment of these five umpires is richly deserved for their consistently high performances over recent times.

“The ECB has a long history of developing some of the best match officials in the world and we are at a point, after the independent review into Officiating last year, where we have the opportunity to drive change to be better.

“We are making good progress on that journey and these appointments are important steps as we establish a clearer and fairer pathway for anyone who wants to be an umpire.

“Additionally, we are close to finalising further contracts for a group of female umpires so they can be better supported from both a performance and financial perspective.

“I would also like to express my thanks and gratitude to Jeff Evans, Jeremy Lloyds, Ian Gould and Ian Ramage who retired from umpiring during the pandemic. Their service to the game has been significant.”

Sporting Memories: Goochie takes a trip down memory lane

Essex Cricket in the Community teamed up with Sporting Memories to host an evening with cricketing legend Graham Gooch, reflecting on his career and significant moments in his life.

Sporting Memories use the power of remembering and talking about sport, along with physical exercise, to tackle dementia, depression and loneliness. They provide social and physical activities for older fans and former players who share a common love of sport.

The sharing of treasured memories is proven to help build cognitive resilience for those living with dementia, as well as being a benefit to mental wellbeing.

The session, held at Leyton Urban Hub in East London where a weekly Sporting Memories club takes place, welcomed cricket lovers from the local community who rejoiced in the anecdotes of an icon.

The former Essex and England captain spoke in detail about how his career had started locally, playing schools and then regional cricket across Waltham Forest and West Essex.

Gooch also reflected on his famous 333 at Lord’s against India in 1990 and being part of an England side that came close to winning World Cups in 1987 and 1992.

After the session, Gooch spoke about the importance of sharing tales from his career with fans.

“Having played professional sport for a long, long time and having a lot of people help me on that journey, I think it’s good for me to share my experiences in return.

“If I can help people through my experiences to get more fun and enjoyment out of sport, or life in general, then that is something I am always happy to do. I was glad to be part of this session with Sporting Memories.”

Getting to know Jamal Richards

Essex County Cricket Club has a proud history of producing talented players from Metropolitan Essex, and Jamal Richards is the latest player from the capital to rise through the ranks at the Club.

Richards, who celebrated his 18th birthday earlier this month, is an all-rounder originally hailing from Edmonton, North London. He attended Norlington High School in Waltham Forest where he had the inspiration of looking up to alumnus, Graham Gooch OBE.

In 2016 at the age of 11, he joined the Essex Academy and has since progressed through the age groups. Making his Second XI debut last year, he played 12 games bowling 44 overs and taking 9 wickets at 28.56.

His development has recently been rewarded with a rookie contract, which he signed shortly before flying out to Abu Dhabi with the First Team for pre-season training.

Whilst on tour he has played two of the three practice games so far, impressing his coaches and teammates with both bat and ball. In his sole T20 appearance he picked up two wickets, whilst only going for 19 runs from his seven overs in the 45-over red-ball fixture yesterday, making him the most economical Essex bowler on the day.
