Match Preview: Essex v Lancashire

Weather permitting, Essex will have some competitive action ahead, starting this week when they meet Lancashire at The Cloudfm County Ground in a couple of two-day friendly matches as part of the pre-season preparations.

The first of those games starts on Tuesday followed by a second clash beginning on Thursday. After the weekend, Kent will be the visitors to Chelmsford in the final friendly. In accordance with Government COVID-19 guidelines, spectators will not be permitted to attend these matches.

Head Coach Anthony McGrath stressed the importance of the work out for his squad over the upcoming week, as they prepare for the start of the County Championship season which begins on Thursday 8 April against Worcestershire.

McGrath said: “They’ve been working hard in the indoor school and outside in the nets but now we have the opportunity to compliment all that effort with some competitive cricket in the middle.

“With six days of cricket, it will be a great opportunity for all of our squad to get some meaningful preparation in ahead of the season.

WATCH: McGrath Discusses 2021 Pre-Season

“Most sides, ourselves included, are normally on foreign soil at this stage of their pre-season preparations when we would normally have four or five friendly matches. But because of circumstances, it’s not been the case this year so we just want to make the best of what we can.

“I’m sure we can gain a huge amount of benefit from these matches and we are just keeping our fingers crossed that the weather holds good.

“We have been able to practise outside for a while recently and all credit to the ground staff who have done a tremendous job in getting the ground ready for our practise and these matches.

“I’m sure that Lancashire, over the four days and then Kent next week will provide us with some good challenges which is what we want at this stage.”

The format for all three matches is based on both teams batting for a day each although should the weather intervene, adjustments will be made, with McGrath adding: “Really, it’s all about practise opportunities rather than the outcome of the game, and the opportunity to replicate what we have done in the nets and turn that into performances in the middle.”

BBC Essex coverage set to continue after new 4-year broadcast deal

The BBC has signed a new four-year deal with the ECB to provide ball-by-ball commentary of every men’s First Class and List A cricket match played in England and Wales covering the LV= Insurance County Championship, the Royal London Cup and the Vitality Blast.

The deal will see some 3,100 days of cricket broadcast on the BBC’s network of local radio stations, the BBC Sport website and BBC Radio Wales (in the case of Glamorgan games). Some will also be aired on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra.

The agreement means the BBC will provide coverage of all red and white ball competitions for the following four domestic cricket seasons through to the end of 2024.

Stephanie Marshall, Head of Sport for BBC England, said: “Last year this service was invaluable for cricket-lovers across England and Wales as all the matches took place behind closed doors. As we start to come out of lockdown, we hope the stands will start to fill – but, as ever, we will remain at the heart of it all with ball-by-ball commentary of every single match.”

Tom Harrison, ECB Chief Executive Officer, said: “The BBC’s ball-by-ball radio coverage of county cricket is the soundtrack to the summer for so many people and we are delighted to have agreed a long-term deal ahead of the new domestic season.”

“The informative and entertaining commentary has never been more important than during the pandemic to ensure our passionate county members and fans can listen to every ball this summer and keep us all closely connected to the county game.”

Included in the deal is a commitment to get new and diverse commentary talent on air through the BBC’s ‘third voice’ scheme.

Adam Mountford, Assistant Editor of BBC Cricket, said County Cricket is “a cornerstone” of the corporation’s coverage. He added: “The County Cricket service has proved to be a breeding ground for the next generation of cricket commentators with the likes of Charles Dagnall, Aatif Nawaz, Isabelle Westbury and Scott Read all becoming Test Match Special regulars following time spent doing County games.”

The deal also benefits Welsh listeners. Graham Davies, Managing Editor of Sport in BBC Wales, said: “This is terrific news for all cricket lovers in Wales and we look forward to bringing ball-by-ball coverage of all Glamorgan’s matches to Welsh audiences over the next four seasons.”

Listeners will benefit from the experience of respected commentators from right across the BBC Local Radio network. The BBC Essex team will return to the airwaves for the opening game of the season on April 8 against Worcestershire at The Cloudfm County Ground, and will cover every Essex First Team game this season.

Watch: McGrath Looks Ahead to the New Campaign

With the pre-season friendlies soon getting underway at The Cloudfm County Ground, Anthony McGrath looks ahead to the 2021 season.

The restrictions have seen the squad training in small groups during the opening months of the year but now the focus turns to this week’s competitive action against Lancashire.

The pre-season schedule is all about putting in the hours to build up fitness levels ahead of the opening game of the season.

With the 2021 plans taking place on UK soil this year, the squad have been able to enjoy a few weeks of training outside in small groups thanks to the work of Head Groundsman, Stuart Kerrison and his team.

The pre-season schedule concludes with games against Lancashire and Kent in the next two weeks. However, ahead of those red-ball fixtures the team spent a day at the Chelmsford Sports and Athletics Centre for fitness testing.

The squad were put through their paces across a range of tests including aerobic fitness with the dreaded yo-yo test.

The 2021 season gets underway on Thursday 8 April against Worcestershire at The Cloudfm County Ground with the first of 3 pre-season games beginning on Tuesday 23 March versus Lancashire. You can become a Member in 2021 with packages available now online.

Women’s Elite Sport Partnership Launched

Five London and Essex based elite sports clubs are today excited to announce a new collaboration – Women’s Elite Sport Partnership.

This innovative group aims to create a unique and powerful opportunity for women’s sports clubs to collectively work together in order to grow and sustain the development of women’s sport in the UK.

West Ham United women’s team, London Pulse Netball Club, Essex Rebels Basketball Club, Sunrisers women’s cricket (along with partners Essex Cricket and Middlesex Cricket) and London Lions have formed the partnership following in-depth analysis of the challenges facing women in sport today, with the goal of supporting sportswomen in reaching their full potential, as well as continuing to progress elite women’s sport to the next level, in a sustainable fashion.

The five clubs which make up the Women’s Elite Sport Partnership will focus on supporting one another in three main areas; engagement, performance and commercial activity. They will efficiently develop programmes that grow women’s participation in sport, capture new audiences through exciting activations and work together in growing the fan base of the combined professional teams.

In terms of performance, the group’s focus will be around enhancing the player pathway experience, capturing key learnings that encourage each athlete to reach their full potential and growing the support staff structure at all levels, in order to improve the experience of female athletes.

The collaboration will also help to develop efficiencies around key ticketing information and enhancing match day experiences for women’s sports fans. There will also be a specific intention to work together and grow the commercial engagement and revenue within women’s sport, to support the clubs’ shared vision of sustainability.

Jack Sullivan, Managing Director of West Ham United women’s team, said: “Despite 2020 being a really challenging year for sports across the globe, women’s football is gaining huge momentum and we are looking to build on this in 2021, through this fantastic partnership. The collaboration is a great opportunity for us to help each other grow and in turn, we hope that the fans of each team will support us all on this journey. Over time, we hope to welcome even more elite teams across England, giving everyone the same unique opportunity to work collaboratively together. The Club and I are really excited about this partnership and look forward to growing women’s sport further, as we look towards the future.”

Sam Bird, CEO and Director of Netball at London Pulse said: “Our vision for London Pulse is to lead the explosive growth of netball for all in London and the South East – connecting with communities and clubs to play, watch and enjoy our sport at all levels. We are committed to finding and developing talented athletes through our performance pathway to the Vitality Netball Superleague and beyond. This collaboration with fellow Elite women’s teams is an exciting step to share best practice, support each other and aid visibility of female sporting icons in our region.”

Dave Parry, Director of Sport at the University of Essex, home of the Essex Rebels said: “Basketball is the second most popular participation team sport among young people in the country, and the Essex Rebels offer a complete pathway from school engagement, junior club and academy, university scholarship programme, through to senior professional teams. We have always committed to parity of opportunity and investment for our women’s programme. The Women’s Elite Sport Partnership is a very exciting opportunity to amplify our commitment to women’s basketball, with the aim of increasing the strength of our overall programme and the competitiveness of our team”

Danni Warren, Regional Director of Women’s Cricket for Sunrisers, said: “Summer of 2020 saw cricket’s inaugural Women’s Elite Domestic Structure competition, with Sunrisers joining seven other regionalised sides to compete for the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. Since then, we have signed our first female professional domestic cricketers, with five players joining Sunrisers on a full-time basis. Both events signify the exciting steps being taken by ECB and all partners to drive the elite level of women’s cricket, both on and off the field.

“At Sunrisers we believe that to accelerate this progress, and to create sustainable programmes and pathways, it is imperative that we learn from our peers and collaborate with those on the same mission as ourselves. The creation of this Women’s Elite Sport Partnership gives us an incredible platform to showcase and develop female athletes across several sports, harnessing our collective desire to provide an opportunity for female sport to thrive over the coming years. All associated with Sunrisers, including our partner counties Essex Cricket and Middlesex Cricket, are really excited to be part of this collective as we move ahead into a busy period for female sport.”

Mark Clark Head Coach, London Lions Women’s said: “The potential of Women’s sport is huge and we see this every day; on and off the court. We understand that reaching this potential cannot be done alone but through a collective effort. Through our involvement in the Women’s Elite Sports Partnership, we know that together we can: increase the visibility, change the stereotypes, inspire the next generation and grow the commercial impact across the whole industry and this is something the London Lions believe in wholeheartedly and are excited to be a part of.”

Lawrence Shines for England Despite Series Defeat

Dan Lawrence’s performance with the bat was one of the few positives England could take from the fourth Test against India.

Chris Silverwood’s team fell to a 3-1 series defeat after an innings and 25 run loss in Ahmedabad, but Dan Lawrence marked his return to the starting XI with a half-century.

Following his knock of 46 in the first innings, Lawrence again found himself trying to hold the innings together in his new number 7 spot. The Chingford man reached his second Test fifty off 93 deliveries, most of which came alongside fellow Essex Academy graduate, Ben Foakes in a 44-run partnership.

dl3

It was a difficult start for Dan in India with scores of 0, 18, 9, and 26 in tricky batting conditions. However, he ended his winter away with England as he started it by reaching the fifty milestone, which will stand him in good stead ahead of India’s reverse tour of England later this year.

The future is bright for Dan’s Test career after finishing the two Tours with 248 runs at an average of 27.55 across the five matches he played against Sri Lanka and India.

England now turn their attention to white-ball cricket with Dan returning home to later join up with his Essex teammates for the 2021 campaign which starts on April 8 against Worcestershire at The Cloudfm County Ground.
