Ground-breaking ECB and Microsoft partnership announced

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Microsoft have today announced a ground-breaking partnership that will put technology at the heart of delivering long-lasting benefits across all levels of cricket.

The relationship will accelerate the ECB’s strategic plan ‘Inspiring Generations’ to grow cricket, connect communities and improve lives, and aligns with Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and every organisation on the planet to achieve more.

Utilising Microsoft’s world-leading approach to technology the partnership will unlock a range of opportunities from driving innovation across the ECB’s elite teams to providing life-changing skills at grassroots level.

The partnership is set to redefine sport-technology relationships as it will focus on innovative and purpose-led initiatives to establish meaningful and sustainable changes across three key areas: Cricket Communities, High Performance and Cultural Transformation.

Digital skills training is set to be provided to grassroot cricket communities over the coming years, which will contribute to Microsoft’s ‘Get On’ campaign, designed to help 1.5 million people build careers in technology by 2024.

This will provide opportunities to people across cricket, from volunteers to young participants, to develop new life skills.

The ECB will also work with Microsoft to explore how artificial intelligence, real-time data and analytics can inform the performance of England’s national teams.

The partnership is set to investigate whether ball-tracking technology can help to unearth the next generation of elite cricketers and engage more diverse talent across the whole game.

ECB Chief Executive Officer, Tom Harrison, said: “This partnership has the potential to transform every level of our game. The ability to drive innovation across high performance cricket will support the continued excellence of our elite teams, and the opportunities we will provide together across the whole recreational cricketing community will improve the life chances of many young people and adults.

“We could not have a better partner than Microsoft as we look to put technology at the heart of our business, develop the culture of the game, and bring our purpose to life.”

Clare Barclay, CEO, Microsoft UK, said: “Microsoft is proud to support the England and Wales Cricket Board in its quest to become a digital-first organisation that can meet the needs and expectations of fans and players now and in the future.

“A key aspect of our work together is to create long lasting economic change in local communities by helping people acquire digital skills so vital to their futures. This partnership is a great example of how we at Microsoft can fulfil our mission of empowering people and organisations around the world to achieve more.”

Vitality Blast and Royal London Cup Fixtures Announced

The fixtures for this season’s Vitality Blast and Royal London Cup have been released.

The Vitality Blast returns to its 14-match group stage format with the traditional North and South groups and will begin on Wednesday 09 June.

As normal, Essex Eagles will feature in the South Group alongside Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent Spitfires, Middlesex, Somerset, Surrey and Sussex Sharks. The top four teams will progress to the knockout stages, with Finals Day scheduled to take place on Saturday 18 September at Edgbaston.

Simon Harmer’s side start things off with a trip to The Cooper Associates County Ground to face Somerset, whilst the first match at Chelmsford will see Hampshire as the visitors to The Cloudfm County Ground.

50-over cricket and the Royal London Cup makes a welcome return in 2021, but with the groupings slightly different to normal.

Although there are still two groups of nine teams, the groups aren’t split into North and South and have instead been split into Group A and Group B. Essex Eagles have been drawn in Group A and will be up against Durham, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent Spitfires, Lancashire, Middlesex, Sussex Sharks and Worcestershire Rapids.

Tom Westley will skipper the side, having taken over as Club Captain in January 2020. His team will get things started with a match against Hampshire at The Ageas Bowl on Thursday 22 July, whilst the first fixture at The Cloudfm County Ground is on Sunday 25 July against Middlesex.

Like in the Vitality Blast, the top four teams will progress to the knockout stages with the Final itself to be staged at Trent Bridge on Thursday 19 August.

India Set For Chelmsford:

The Club are also pleased to announce that Essex will face India ‘A’ on Sunday 4 – Wednesday 7 July in this year’s Tourist match.

Essex Cricket Raise £6,168 for The Trussell Trust

Towards the end of 2020, the Club launched the Essex Cricket Xmas Food Bank Appeal campaign.

Around the Christmas period every year, players from across all of the Club’s squads normally visit the Children’s Ward at Broomfield hospital to spread festive cheer and hand out presents.

However, due COVID-19, that wasn’t possible in 2020, but there was still a desire to do some charitable and help out during these unprecedented times. The players and staff decided to raise money for The Trussell Trust, who operate across Essex and provide food for families and individuals in crisis.

It was decided that to raise money, the players and staff would be run/walk 779km across a 2-week period. Why 779km? Well, that’s the distance from The Cloudfm County Ground to Lord’s, Lord’s to Edgbaston, Edgbaston to Taunton and Taunton back to The Cloudfm County Ground. These are the four grounds that Essex have won five trophies at over the last five years.

Players from the Men’s, Women’s, Academy and Ability sides took part, along with plenty of members of staff, and the total distance was reached with two days to spare.

The Club initially set a fundraising target of £3,000, which is the equivalent of 1,000 meals. Fortunately, there was plenty of interest from Members, supporters and sponsors and the total raised stands at a whopping £6,168.

On the fundraising, Club Captain Tom Westley said: “We’re extremely grateful to everybody who donated to our campaign.

“Times are tough for a lot of people at the moment, so it’s pleasing that we were able to pull together as a Club and do something which has hopefully made a difference to families and individuals across the county.”

Essex Cricket would also like to thank the following sponsors who donated to the fundraising:

Woodland Group
D&B Scaffolding
Wilkin & Sons
T Bello Group in partnership with Taco Bell
Trident Marketing
EASST
Scrutton Bland
The Kenton Group

The Essex Cricket Xmas Food Bank Appeal is still taking donations, and if you want to donate to this great cause, you can do so by clicking here:

Lawrence’s Rise to the Test Arena

It was 28 April 2015 when Daniel William Lawrence burst onto the county scene with a spectacular century against Surrey at The Kia Oval. It unsurprisingly stole the headlines in a match that ended in a draw at the beginning of the campaign but set him on his cricketing journey.

That innings of 161 off 206 balls at the tender age of 17 years and 290 days sparked the beginning of his rise which now sees him making his England Test debut against Sri Lanka seven years on.

It saw him become the Club’s youngest first-class centurion and third youngest batsman to score a County Championship ton, behind Kent’s Godfrey Bryan and Worcestershire’s Dipak Patel in 1920 and 1976, respectively.

Lawrence said at the time:

“When I hit the cover drive off (Zafar) Ansari on 96 I knew it was going for four and I could start celebrating,” he said.

“It was a great feeling. I’ve had quite a few messages already, especially from my old school friends.

“It was quite an easy decision for me to leave after just one year of the Sixth Form. I did my AS Levels but, in that last school year, I wasn’t really into my school work and I just wanted to go and play cricket. I went to Australia last winter, which was a great experience, and now I’m getting my chance with Essex.

“At Essex, we have some great players too – like Alastair Cook, Ravi Bopara and Jesse Ryder – and they have all been fantastic to me. All the coaches at Essex have been great, and the bowlers like David Masters and Graham Napier have also helped me a lot by telling me how they would look to get me out and things like that.”

Lawrence went on to hit 409 runs in the 2015 season with an average of 37.18. His figures continued to grow year-on-year en route as the team geared up to the 2017 campaign.

By this point, Lawrence had become a pivotal batsman at the top of the order as number 4 and showed a different side to his game in the first game back in Division One with his side up against the wall.

Lancashire were the visitors to Chelmsford and after a second innings declaration of 317-3, thanks to 140* from Alex Davies, they set Essex a target of 477 for a first win in the 2017 campaign.

It was Dan Lawrence who dropped anchor in the Essex innings as wickets fell at regular intervals around him. A 135-run contribution with Tom Westley was the notable partnership of the innings but ultimately his knock of 141, spanning 333 balls and 427 minutes in the middle, clinched a draw from the hands of defeat and again highlighted his grit and determination in red-ball cricket.

Dan reflected on the innings after the match, saying:

“It’s the favourite of my five centuries because I managed to bat all day and get the team out of a hole.

“But I think it is quite important not to celebrate a draw. We had our backs up against the walls, it was a tough first three days, and it took a lot of character today from the boys to fight through and get a draw. Personally, it is very satisfying, but we will look to push on and get a win next week at Taunton.”

Little did Dan know that there would only be three further draws in a season, which saw Essex dominate an unbeaten campaign with six victories and a County Championship trophy.

The batsman was also awarded his County Cap that year during the game against Surrey at The Cloudfm County Ground to mark a spectacular season both for the team and him personally.

Lawrence earned himself an England Lions call up that same week with Head Coach and now England Head Coach, Chris Silverwood saying, “He has gone on to become a key member of our squad and if he continues to work as hard as he has done over the last couple of years he will have a very bright future in the game.”

Averaging 44.76 (second to only Alastair Cook), he was the second-highest run-scorer that season with 761 first-class runs, which included three 50s and three centuries.

Following a second County Championship title with the Club in 2019 and a successful year with the bat in all three formats, it was at the beginning of 2020 when Dan Lawrence made his real claim for a spot in England Test squad.

The Lions’ tour of Australia at the start of a turbulent year saw Dan surpass his highest career score, hitting 190 against a Cricket Australia XI in Hobart.

This was followed up with 125 against Australia ‘A’ in an unofficial Test at the MCG and half-century v a New South Wales XI.

Dan’s form continued into the white-ball format during the tour as he ended with a combined average of 98.60 across the six unbeaten games.

It was only a matter of time before he would get his chance with the full Test side…

Danni Warren, Regional Director of Women’s Cricket for Sunrisers – London and East Region added:

It is always amazing news when the hard work that you see players put in away from the spotlight pays off with selection, and given the challenging times at present this news is a very welcome boost for all associated with Sunrisers.

“Both Mady and Fran head over to NZ with the best wishes of their teammates, coaches and all fans of cricket across the Sunrisers region. LV= GI become new County Championship title sponsors

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced a major long-term partnership with LV= General Insurance (LV= GI) across international and county red-ball cricket.

The deal sees LV= GI become Official Title Partner of the County Championship, and Men’s and Women’s Test Cricket in England & Wales, until the end of 2023.

Essex will be looking to defend the LV= Insurance County Championship, which will get underway on April 8 in a remodelled three-group format as agreed by the 18 first-class counties to help mitigate against the possible impact of COVID-19.

This new partnership expands LV= GI’s commitment to cricket in England and Wales following the recent launch of the £1million #Funds4Runs initiative – jointly funded with the ECB – which is helping those recreational cricket communities most impacted by the pandemic recover financially.

#Funds4Runs was launched in November 2020 and focuses on the main areas where access to cricket support or cricket itself has been limited, including children from deprived backgrounds, diverse communities, disability groups and women and girls’ programmes.

The initiative, and LV= GI’s support, will also help deliver against three wider ECB objectives – delivering the purpose of ‘connecting communities and improving lives’ through cricket, increasing the relevance of cricket locally and growing long-term engagement with the game in these communities.

Financial support from the initiative will be accessible to affiliated clubs, All Stars cricket centres, Community organisations, County Cricket Boards and Cricket Wales. Interested parties can register their interest in #Funds4Runs funding at ecb.co.uk/funds4runs or find out more information at lv.com/gi/cricket.

Watch how the 2019 County Championship was won in the final match of the season:

The partnership also marks a return to professional cricket in England and Wales for LV= GI, which has a longstanding heritage and association with the sport. LV= GI’s involvement dates back almost 20 years to 2002 and includes three separate stints as title partner of the County Championship – most recently from 2007-15 as the LV= County Championship.

Heather Smith, Managing Director at LV= GI, said: “As a business, we’ve got a strong heritage in cricket going back almost 20 years and this partnership with the ECB gives us a fantastic opportunity to build on what we’ve done already and deepen relationships across all forms of cricket.

“We understand the importance of supporting local communities and the launch of #Funds4Runs, to help grassroots cricket clubs to get back on their feet during this awful time, was a proud moment and this longer-term partnership will give us the opportunity to support cricket at all levels. Domestic Test and County cricket has seen some truly historic moments in recent history, so to be a part of this over the next three years is very exciting. Away from the professional game, we also want to help strengthen cricket communities across the UK, and our values around supporting communities closely align with those of the ECB.”

ECB Chief Executive, Tom Harrison, said: “LV= has a long and proud history of supporting cricket and their return as a partner will benefit all levels of our game. The strength of our partnerships are vital and in LV= I know we have a partner that shares our ambition to support the growth of cricket from grassroots to our England teams.

“Today’s announcement is great news for domestic and international cricket and builds on the £1million #Funds4Fund community initiative that we have jointly made with LV= to support areas of the recreational game hardest hit by COVID-19.

“We are excited about the prospect of a summer of cricket that will feature the return of the LV= Insurance County Championship as well as a highly-anticipated LV= Insurance Test Series against India. We know how much our fans are looking forward to a summer of cricket and we continue to work closely with Government and plan for how we can safely welcome supporters back to our venues.”
