Essex Soaring High Across Social Media Channels

Independent research carried out by search marketing agency, Red Hot Penny, reveals that the Club are ranked alongside some of the UK’s biggest sports clubs in terms of Social Media engagement.

Across the UK, 80 professional sports teams spanning football, rugby, cricket, basketball, and ice hockey had their social media channels analysed to find out how they’re using the platform as a marketing tool.

Red Hot Penny published this information in a report titled ‘Social Scorecard: Sport‘, which breaks down social media channels across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and gives the clubs an overall score based on number of followers, average post engagement, and overall engagement rate.

Although Somerset County Cricket Club claimed the overall top spot, Essex secured second place in the county cricket clubs table, and placed 12th overall across sport as a whole, scoring 69.875.

Surrey CCC vs Essex CCC, Specsavers County Championship Division 1, Cricket, the Kia Oval, Kennington, London, United Kingdom - 11 Apr 2019

The Club’s strong performance was worthy of beating rivals Kent County Cricket Club, who scored 32.6. Even Football Premier League clubs Manchester United and Newcastle United bowed to Essex, scoring 62.125 and 59.75, respectively.

Commenting on their strong performance, the Club’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Ashley Neave said:

“We are extremely pleased with the findings of the report, especially after the emphasis we have put on social media within our digital strategy in recent years.

Our social media channels continue to grow into a fundamental platform for interacting with all our stakeholders on a daily basis, such as supporters, sponsors and cricket followers. As a Club, we strive to develop new and engaging content, which is relevant to supporters in Essex, as well as across the globe.

“The support that the team has throughout the season at The Cloudfm County Ground is mirrored online and we thank all of our fans for their continued support.

David Schulhof, CEO of Red Hot Penny said:

“This study has unveiled some huge opportunities for the nation’s top sports clubs, showing the massive potential they have to grow and develop. Sports clubs are a hub of opportunity, filled with influencers, exciting events, and news. We want to see these opportunities seized, and hope that our research has highlighted ways for clubs across the nation to improve their social media strategies”

Match Preview: Essex Eagles v Sussex Sharks

The Essex Eagles continue with their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign on Tuesday when Sussex Sharks visit The Cloudfm County Ground.

The Eagles got back to winning ways with a convincing victory over Hampshire by 111 runs, a result that carried them to within 2 points of third place in Group B.

With just three matches left to play in the qualifying round, all-rounder Matt Coles is confident that the Eagles can still progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

He said: “If we play cricket like we did against Hampshire, there is no reason why we can’t win the rest of these matches.

“We all believe in each other in the dressing room and we will be fighting to the bitter end. Hopefully, we’ll come out on top and sneak a place somewhere down the line.”

Coles made his first List A appearance of the season on Sunday and played a leading role in defeating Hampshire with figures of 4 for 48, his best List A figures for the county.

Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschate both scored 89 and Coles acknowledged their pivotal part in the victory.

Coles said: “They set it up nicely and we scored 120 runs in the last ten overs and that was where the game turned.

“But credit to everyone in the whole team because it was a great team performance rather than individuals.”

The Eagles have named a 16-man squad that includes Varun Chopra for Tuesday’s fixture. The opener, who scored back-to-back centuries against Glamorgan and Middlesex, has been side-lined since with a quad injury for the past week.

Allison and Buttleman Sign Summer Contracts

Essex County Cricket Club are pleased to announce that Ben Allison and Will Buttleman have signed summer contracts until the end of the season.

The youngsters have both been heavily involved with the Second XI over the last few years and will be looking to break into the First Team over the duration of the season.

Upon signing his summer contract, Allison said: “I’m delighted to sign my first contract with the Club. I’ve been with Essex since I was 8 years old and it’s always been my dream to be a professional cricketer. To now be contracted is a very special moment and a very proud day for me and my family.”

On his summer contract, Buttleman said: “I’m thrilled to sign a contract with Essex, and I’m really looking forward to the season, building on the First Team experience I’ve already gained this year and developing further as a player.”

Buttleman was drafted into the First Team at the last moment during the opening County Championship fixture against Hampshire after Adam Wheater suffered a hand injury, and with Michael Pepper recovering from appendix surgery.

He impressed with the gloves and Head Coach Anthony McGrath said: “Will did an outstanding job behind the stumps for us and is an excellent prospect for the future.

“Both he and Ben have shown tremendous potential and have been involved in the First Team set up since the start of the season. We’re all excited to see how they develop and push on over the course of the campaign.”

Match Report:

Essex Eagles returned to winning ways in the Royal London One-Day Cup with a 111-run victory over South Group leaders and current holders Hampshire at The Cloudfm County Ground.

After scoring 341 for 6 from 50 overs, the Eagles bowled out their opponents for 230 in 40.5 overs to get back into winning ways in this season’s competition.

The Essex Eagles total owed much to Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschate who both scored 89 and shared in a fifth wicket stand of 150 in 19 overs after coming together with the total on 147 for 4.

Bopara hit eight fours and a six from 83 deliveries while his captain hammered one six and a dozen fours from only 59 deliveries before he was run out.

Tom Westley (47) and Rishi Patel, who struck a fluent 35 on his List A debut, also made useful contributions but Alastair Cook failed to make such of an impact, making only 17 before he was caught behind.

Hampshire lost three wickets for 37 runs in reply but were revived by James Vince and Rilee Rossouw.

They plundered 87 from eleven before Vince drove Dan Lawrence to Paul Walter at cow cover to depart for 47. Rossouw and Gareth Berg then continued the tempo adding 79 in 8 overs before Berg went to a catch off the bowling of Coles for 41.

Four overs later, Rossouw put up an easy catch to Jamie Porter at backward short-leg when seven runs short of his century, to leave the visitors 215 for 8. He struck one six and eight fours in an innings spanning 72 deliveries but his dismissal saw the end of Hampshire’s chances .

Bopara completed a fine all-round display with figures of 3 for 39 while Matt Coles returned a career List A best for Essex with 4 for 48. Porter failed to get among wickets during his eight overs but showed a safe pair of hands by taking four catches to equal the highest number of catches held by an Essex fielder in List A games.

The Eagles now resume the Royal London One-Day Cup battles with a home game against Sussex Sharks on Tuesday, with two fixtures against Kent Spitfires and Gloucestershire also coming up to inspire qualification to the latter stages!

Match Preview: Essex Eagles v Hampshire

The Essex Eagles are searching for a first win in four as Hampshire visit the Cloudfm County Ground on Sunday, with Anthony McGrath’s side desperate to get back to winning ways.

McGrath has named a 15-man squad that includes all-rounder Matt Coles who could be in line to make his first Royal London One-Day Cup appearance of the season.

McGrath will be looking to Coles to boost his bowling attack and said: “We didn’t bowl well against Somerset which was plain for everyone to see.

“We need to do better, and we’ll be looking for the group to improve. Overall, we’ve got to do the basics so much better than we’ve done recently because if you don’t when you come up against a good side, you’re going to get beaten.

“When you lose, you have to accept the criticism if it comes your way and take it on the chin. The players all know they can do better, and we’ll be looking for them to do that starting on Sunday.”

In regards to qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition, McGrath said: “We can’t even look that far ahead, we need to get back to doing the basics well starting in that next game against Hampshire. Do that and we’ll take things from there.”

Match Summary:

This week saw the opening Second XI Championship match of the season takes place with Essex, captained by Rishi Patel, travel to Tunbridge Wells. The match also saw the return of Michael Pepper who has been absent for the start of the season due to appendix surgery, although only featuring with the bat.

After being put into bat by the hosts, it was two players who have seen First Team action in recent weeks, Patel (61) and Will Buttleman (80) star with the bat.

However, the standout innings on Day One came from Essex number 9 batsman, Shane Snater who, along with Buttleman, broke an 8th wicket Second XI Championship partnership against Kent on the way to 149 and his maiden Second XI century. His knock included 11 fours and 7 sixes as Essex declared the first innings on 449-8.

The Kent innings gave an opportunity to the likes of Matt Coles (3-53), who has not long been back from injury and youngster, Ben Allison who shined, taking 4-47. A toe injury to Aaron Beard meant that he was unable to play any further part.

Kent ended 10 runs short of the follow-on target so were put into bat again by Essex, however the weather interrupted proceedings at the beginning of Day Three. After a century from Kent’s Burgess and the score on 202-2 in the host’s second innings, the match ended in a draw.
