Match Preview: Somerset v Essex Eagles

The Essex Eagles head to Taunton to face Somerset in the Royal London One-Day Cup on Friday and will be looking to get back to winning ways in the competition.

After success in the opening match, the Eagles have suffered back-to-back defeats and now come up against a Somerset side who have taken maximum points from their three Group B matches so far.

The absence of Varun Chopra against Surrey proved to be a hammer blow for Anthony McGrath’s side. The opener, who had scored centuries in the first two matches, was forced to pull out of Tuesday’s match with a quad strain.

Essex will select from a 14-man squad for Friday’s match with Aaron Beard currently unavailable after fracturing a toe.

Eagles skipper Ryan ten Doeschate admits that his side needs to improve on recent performances if they are to remain in the 50-over competition.

He said: “We played really well against Glamorgan in our first match, it was a superb overall display with bat and ball, but then we suffered two losses with those disappointing results.

“We’ve obviously left ourselves with a lot to do if we want to qualify for the next stage. Last year we only won two of our first five games but then we took three victories from the last three matches.

“We need to dust ourselves down and hopefully we can go down to Taunton and put on an improved performance. Somerset are a very strong and good one day side, but we know we can beat anyone when we play to the best of our abilities.”

Essex Eagles squad to face Somerset:

Ryan ten Doeschate (27) (captain)
Ravi Bopara (25)
Alastair Cook (26)
Sam Cook (16)
Simon Harmer (11)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Aron Nijjar (24)
Rishi Patel (12)
Jamie Porter (44)
Matt Quinn (94)
Peter Siddle (64)
Paul Walter (22)
Tom Westley (21)
Robbie White (4) (wicket-keeper)

Robbie White: “I’m absolutely loving it here”

On loan wicket-keeper Robbie White has impressed greatly since joining from Middlesex just over two weeks ago.

With Adam Wheater recovering from an operation on his thumb, and Michael Pepper recuperating after appendix surgery, the 23-year-old was drafted in at the last moment, and since then he has taken a dozen catches and has three stumpings to his name.

“I’m absolutely loving it,” he said. “It all came out of the blue, so it’s been a whirlwind few weeks. The chance to play regular first-team cricket was something I was desperate for at this point. So as soon as I heard there was an opportunity to play week-in week-out, and learn on the job, I jumped at it.

“Even just training and getting involved with the squad is going to make me a better player. So if I can go back to Middlesex having gained from that experience, having learnt from some of the senior players in the dressing room, then it can only help me in my career.”

Despite being a Middlesex player, White’s focus is solely on the Eagles upcoming Royal London One-Day Cup group games, with the side facing Somerset at Taunton tomorrow and Hampshire at The Cloudfm County Ground on Sunday.

Anthony McGrath’s men are looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats against Middlesex and Surrey, and White said: “I know this one-day campaign is something they are really focused on.

“If I can help the guys so they are going into the last few games with a fighting chance of getting through to the knockout stages, that will be fantastic.”

White’s arrival at Chelmsford has given him another opportunity to team up with Essex seamer Sam Cook and revive the scorebook entry of ‘caught White bowled Cook’ from their days as team-mates at Loughborough University.

“I had two really good years on the MCCU scheme with Sam, so I know him and his game really well. I always enjoy keeping to him; I always feel I’m in the game when he’s bowling. It’s been nice to rekindle that combination.

“It’s been amazing to see how well he’s done since I left Loughborough. I’ve been in contact with him consistently for the last year or two since we’ve been out of uni. I was messaging him frantically over the days when this loan was on the cards.”

MATCH PREVIEW: SURREY V ESSEX EAGLES

The Essex Eagles make the short journey to The Kia Oval to face Surrey in the Royal London One-Day Cup on Tuesday, and are looking to get back to winning ways following the home defeat by Middlesex at The Cloudfm County Ground on Good Friday.

After their comprehensive success in their opening match in the competition against Glamorgan last Wednesday, the Eagles suffered defeat by 38 runs two days later after Middlesex rattled up 366 for 8 from their 50 overs.

Essex Head Coach, Anthony McGrath said: “We saw the two sides of Essex Cricket in the space of those 48 hours last week with a superb performance against Glamorgan and then that disappointing effort on Friday against Middlesex.

“We knew that Middlesex would be a tough side and so it proved, they have a really good batting line-up but even so, we were disappointed with our bowling and that’s something we’ll need to address. It was extra disappointing that in front of an excellent Chelmsford crowd, we let both them and ourselves down.

“I also felt sorry for Varun (Chopra) who top-scored in the game with his second century in as many matches only to end on the losing side. Tom (Westley) supported him well but we needed another batter to step forward.

“The games come thick and fast though in this competition though and Tuesday’s match with Surrey gives us a chance to show what we can do. Surrey have lost both their opening matches and so they will be extra keen to get their first win on the board and we’ll need to be at the top of our game with both bat and ball if we want to get the win.”

The Eagles have named the following 15-man squad for the match with Surrey that is scheduled to start at 11am.

Essex Eagles squad to face Surrey:

Ryan ten Doeschate (27), (captain)
Ravi Bopara (25)
Varun Chopra (6)
Alastair Cook (26)
Sam Cook (16)
Simon Harmer (11)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Aron Nijjar (24)
Rishi Patel (12)
Jamie Porter (44)
Matt Quinn (94)
Peter Siddle (64)
Paul Walter (22)
Tom Westley (21)
Robbie White (4), (wicket-keeper)

Essex Innings:

Middlesex opened their Royal London One-day Cup campaign with an exciting 38 runs victory over Essex at Chelmsford.

After posting 366 for 8 in their 50 overs, Middlesex bowled their opponents out for 328. Defeat left Varun Chopra with the dubious distinction of being on the losing side after scoring his second century of the week in the competition.

He followed up his 111 against Glamorgan 48 hours earlier with a superb 127 from as many deliveries before he was caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Eoin Morgan attacking Toby Roland-Jones.

Chopra’s innings contained 2 sixes and 14 fours and his removal from the scene in the 38th over with the total on 256 proved the turning point.

With Tom Westley, Chopra shared in a second wicket stand of 158 in 22 overs after Alastair Cook had been caught behind by John Simpson off Tim Murtagh for only 11.

Westley made 77 from 59 balls with the help of 2 sixes and 7 fours before he fell to return Nathan Sowter catch.

Middlesex’s innings, after they had been put in, owed much to Dawid Malan.

The opener, without taking undue risks, stroked the ball fluently around the field while gathering 11 fours in his 95 made from 102 balls.

With his century beckoning, it needed a fine throw by Peter Siddle at cover to remove him when his direct throw from cover hit the stumps.

John Simpson, Morgan and Steve Eskinazi all scored better than a run-a-ball before being dimissed in the 20’s but it was Nick Gubbins and George Scott who gave the Middlesex innings momentum in the later overs.

Gubbins struck 7 fours in making 56 in 57 balls while Scott plundered 5 sixes in 57 balls while Scott thrashed 5 sixes and three fours from only 30 deliveries before becoming on of Sidddle’s three victims at a cost of 71 from 10 overs.

It was not a match Ravi Bopara will want to remember. He conceded 59 while sending down half-a-dozen overs and made just 20 before edging Roland-Jones to wicket-keeper Simpson who was standing up to the pace man.

Following Chopra’s dismissal and that of Bopara in the same over, Essex were always struggling to keep up with the required rate despite the efforts of Ryan ten Doeschate.

The Essex captain made 39 from 19 balls, his departure providing the excellent Sowter with his fifth wicket when he was stumped.

Sowter’s teasing spin brought him a personal best of 6 for 62 from 9.2 overs and was just reward for a disciplined performance.

Robert White, on a two-month loan from Middlesex to help Essex overcome a wicket-keeping crisis with both Adam Wheater and Michael Pepper recovering from injuries, underlined his promise with four catches and a stumping to go with the five catches he took in the victory against Glamorgan earlier in the week.

But his efforts were not enough to spare Essex from defeat after Middlesex finished one run short of their highest 50 overs score.

Middlesex Innings:

Essex Eagles were left a target of 367 after Middlesex posted a formidable 366 for 8 in the Royal London One-Day Cup clash at The Cloudfm County Ground.

The visitors total was built around opener Dawid Malan who struck 95 from 102 balls before he was run out by Peter Siddle’s direct throw from cover.

Nick Gubbins hit seven fours while making 56 from 57 balls while George Scott plundered 63 from only 30 deliveries with the help of 5 sixes and 3 fours.

Middlesex continued a positive tempo throughout reaching 167 for 4 at the halfway stage after which they continued to punish the Eagles attack.

Siddle emerged as the Eagles most successful bowler with three wickets but conceded 71 runs in 10 overs in doing so.

Spinner Dan Lawrence was the home side’s best bowler sending down a full allocation of 10 overs and picking up the wickets of Gubbins and Eoin Morgan.

It was wicket-keeper Robbie White who had most to smile about as he claimed four catches and a stumping just two days after he picked up five catches in the victory earlier in the week.

MATCH PREVIEW: ESSEX EAGLES V MIDDLESEX

Essex Eagles entertain Middlesex at The Cloudfm County Ground on Friday in the Royal London One-Day Cup, having made a blistering start to the competition by thrashing Glamorgan by 180 runs in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Varun Chopra paved the way for victory with 111, adding to his 124 and 98 not out on the two previous occasions he has faced the Welsh side in the 50-over competition.

The opener claimed that Wednesday’s victory was the ideal start to the Eagles white-ball campaign this year, and said: “In this format, it’s a confidence thing and you do need to get a win early and take confidence from that which we’ve done.

“We had control from ball one, and overall it was a good team performance. It was a little tricky at the start, but once we had three good partnerships up front, it gave licence for Dan Lawrence to show his talent.

“Our bowlers then gave us a great start, and once a side loses three wickets in the power play, it gets more difficult from then on.

“We are really pleased with how things went. It could not have gone better and so we’ll be nice and confident going into the Middlesex game and hopefully, we can back it up with another strong performance.

Reflecting on his own pivotal innings, Chopra stated: “There hasn’t been too much cricket for me this year up to now and so that was important for me to get a good score and start to feel confident about my own game.

“I want to kick on from here and have a good tournament.”

The Eagles have named a 15-man squad for the match with Middlesex with batsman Rishi Patel added to the party named for the Glamorgan match.

Essex Eagles squad to face Middlesex:
