New Shirt: Eagles Go Yellow For The 2019 Season

The Club are delighted to reveal the new Vitality Blast shirt that will be worn by the Eagles during the 2019 and 2020 campaigns.

The new T20 shirt, which has been produced by Surridge, is predominantly yellow with navy blue sleeves and stripes down each side. It also features red and yellow piping around the ends of each sleeve and is a throwback to the first ever Eagles shirt! This year, we are commemorating 20 years of the Essex Eagles who were formed for the National League competition in 1999.

We are delighted that Seven Investment Management remain as our front of shirt and sleeve sponsor and welcome Cloudfm as our collar and back of shirt sponsor for the T20 competition.

The new shirt, which is designed to be lighter and more comfortable for the players than previous strips, will be worn for the first time on Thursday 18 July when the Essex Eagles face Middlesex at Lord’s.

Essex batsman and 2018 Eagles Player of the Year, Varun Chopra, said: “I really like the new shirt, it’s nice and comfortable to wear and looks good, and me and the boys can’t wait to play in it.

“I really like the retro look it has. I remember when I was younger I used to watch Ronnie Irani and Nasser Hussain play for the Eagles in the original coloured kit, so just looking at it brings back some great memories for me and I’m sure it will have the same effect with plenty of the fans.”

The replica shirts are available to purchase from The Cricket Store at Essex Cricket, priced at £41.95 for Adults, £34.95 for Juniors and £30.00 for Infants.

Walter Smashes 184* For Combined XI

Paul Walter helped himself to 184 runs from just 131 balls as a Combined XI featuring several of the Essex contingents beat Somerset by 7 wickets.

Walter was joined by Michael Pepper, Rishi Patel, Aron Nijjar, Jack Plom and Aaron Beard for the match at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, in which Somerset batted first.

Plom’s pace earned him three wickets from his 10 overs whilst Walter bagged another 2. Beard went for just 16 runs off his five overs whilst Nijjar was unlucky to not grab a wicket as Somerset scored 293 from their 50 overs, with Tim Rouse top scoring with 60.

Walter and Pepper opened the batting and swiftly got to work. After a fast start, Pepper was caught on 38, but Walter carried on chipping away and got to his century with a sweeping boundary.

Patel was bowled by Bess for 24 whilst Nijjar was caught by Green on 34, but Walter was making light work of Somerset and raced to his 150.

In fitting style, he scored the winning runs with another boundary and finished on 184 not out after 42.5 overs.

It was another good run out for six of the squad, who began a two-day match against Worcestershire this morning.

Essex Eagles V Worcestershire Rapids Match Report

Essex flew out to Abu Dhabi last Sunday and began their pre-season training camp with two days of fielding practice, net sessions and fitness work.

The side then played Worcestershire Rapids in what was their first competitive match of 2019, losing the toss and being asked to bowl first at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

The Eagles started well, as Jamie Porter’s pace proved the undoing of opener Alex Milton, before Sam Cook removed Olly Westbury with a beautiful delivery to reduce the Rapids to 19-2.

However, the Rapids fought back thanks to half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell, Josh Dell and George Rhodes, closing on 293-7 from their 50 overs. Jamie Porter was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-61 to restrict the Rapids to a par score in excellent conditions for batting.

Alastair Cook made fifty in his maiden innings as a Knight and Ryan ten Doeschate (62) maneuvered the ball expertly to put the pressure back on Worcestershire. Cook then fell playing the sweep, but Adam Wheater maintained the momentum, hitting 11 fours and two sixes on his way to a magnificent century from just 77 balls.

Unfortunately, wickets were following at the other end. Charlie Morris took 4-39 to trigger a collapse from 220-5 to 289 all out, with Wheater left stranded on 102* with an over to go and just 4 runs to win.

It was an extremely close game and a great run out for the side, with great bowling figures and batting scores from plenty within the squad.

Pre-Season Tour: Eagles set for match action

The Pre-Season Tour of Abu Dhabi is in full swing with two days of training since landing on Sunday.

The full squad have been working hard, with the help of new Assistant Head Coach and Bowling Coach & Bowling Coach, Andre Nel who joined the squad from South Africa for his first taste of working with the players.

The first competitive action is set to take place on Wednesday (13 March) as the Eagles take on Worcestershire Rapids in a 50-over 12-a-side match at the Sheikh Zayed Nursery Ground.

The match is another chance for youngster, Rishi Patel to impress Anthony McGrath, with Alastair Cook and Varun Chopra set to open the batting for the Eagles.

Adam Wheater will be behind the stumps with a number of pace bowling options, including Jamie Porter, Sam Cook and Aaron Beard Jamie Porter and Sam Cook, Paul Walter.

Andre Nel Named Assistant Head Coach & Bowling Coach

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce that former South African fast bowler, Andre Nel, has been appointed as the Club’s new Assistant Head Coach & Bowling Coach.

The 41-year-old will join the coaching staff from Easterns and emerged as Anthony McGrath’s Assistant following a lengthy and thorough recruitment process.

Nel started his playing career in South Africa with Easterns and made his first-class debut for the side in 1996. His reputation as a consistent and dangerous bowler quickly rose and by 2001, he was a regular in the South Africa Test and ODI squads.

Nel was named the South African Cricketer of the Year in both 2004 and 2005, and following a successful campaign at the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, he joined Essex. Nel went on to take 35 wickets across all formats for the Club and was awarded his County Cap in 2008.

Nel made 524 appearances and took 1,016 wickets during his playing career, most notably turning out for Northamptonshire and Surrey during his time in England, as well as Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

Since retiring from playing cricket in 2013, Nel has turned his hand to a number of coaching roles. He was Head Coach of Phantoms for their 2014 and 2015 Ram Slam campaigns, before taking over as Head Coach at the Club where he initially made his name, Easterns. Since 2016, Nel has also been an Assistant & Bowling Coach at the South African National Cricket Academy during the close season.

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath is thrilled to secure the services of Nel and said: “It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to bring Andre to Chelmsford.

“Andre played cricket at an elite level throughout his entire career and brings with him a huge wealth of cricket experience and knowledge. Being a former Essex player, he also has a good understanding of the Club, our fans and the ethos.

“I know our bowlers are especially happy he’s on board and are looking forward to working with him, and the whole squad will profit from his technical and tactical knowledge.”

Nel is equally excited about taking this next step in his career and said: “I’m really thrilled to be joining Essex as Assistant Head Coach & Bowling Coach.

“It’s a great opportunity and I’ve only ever heard good things about Anthony McGrath as a Coach, and I can’t wait to start working alongside him and the rest of the team out in Abu Dhabi this week.

“As a former Essex player I know it’s a fantastic Club to be involved with and since leaving I’ve always followed from afar. I’m really eager to get working with such a talented group of players and contribute to the future success of the Club.”
