PCA members empowered with Sporting Chance

The Professional Cricketers’ Association has teamed up with Sporting Chance Clinic as part of their responsibility to protect the welfare of their current playing members ahead of the 2019 season, including the Essex squad at The Cloudfm County Ground this week.

Sporting Chance Founder and former Arsenal and England football captain Tony Adams delivered the most recent session, with the campaign focused on the subject of recreational drug use, to the senior Essex squad on Wednesday, with all 18 first-class squads, as well as the England Women, receiving the educational workshops.

The talks have been funded by the Professional Cricketers’ Trust as part of their role in providing support for PCA members and their families when they need it most, as the players’ charity increases its preventative outlook on providing assistance for professional cricketers in England and Wales.

In recent years, the Trust has funded nationwide seminars on the risks of gambling and drive safety courses, which the PCA Personal Development and Welfare Programme facilitated through expert providers.

The Programme is one of the association’s core activities with trained Personal Development Managers (PDMs) providing support and guidance to players on a variety of issues such as education, career and family whilst keeping their cricketing focus.

All first-class counties are supported by six regional PDMs and their aim is to work closely with the players, coaches and support staff to minimise potential concerns and distractions, which could adversely affect a player’s career. One of these areas is the PCA’s recreational drugs policy.

The PCA started working with Sporting Chance in 2018, a charity which was created in 2000 by Adams. He started the charity to address the difficulties he experienced as a player in accessing professional and confidential support for his drinking problem. The charity still exclusively treats current and retired professionals from a range of sports including football (through its longstanding relationship with the Professional Footballers’ Association), rugby league and cricket through the PCA.

The charity has three departments: a residential clinic treating addictive disorders (gambling, alcohol and other drugs), a national network of counsellors and therapists that offers talking therapies for a diverse range of mental health issues and an education department that delivers seminars to staff and players at clubs and governing bodies across sport in the UK.

In each session, Sporting Chance share their experience of the issue of recreational drugs as a treatment provider, explore the reasons that lead athletes to take recreational drugs and the consequences of both isolated and long-term use (including addiction).

As part of the hour-long workshops, every player hears a personal account of recreational drug use from a former professional sportsperson, the problems their drug use caused and how they overcame these problems by reaching out for help.

PCA Director of Development and Welfare Ian Thomas said:

“Educating our members on areas which could adversely affect their careers and lives is of paramount importance to the PCA so these seminars are very important.

“I would like to thank the Professional Cricketers’ Trust for funding this initiative which underlines their commitment in proactive support of our players, without the continued support of the charity and everyone who donates to this worthwhile cause the Personal Development and Welfare Programme would not be as extensive as it is.

“To have Tony Adams and the Sporting Chance Clinic team visit our players has been inspirational and I have no doubt these engaging sessions will reinforce our messaging on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle during and post cricket.”

Sporting Chance Founder Adams said:

“Cricket has now come on board with what we’re doing and that’s great.

“The PCA have been very enthusiastic and supportive of the process and we’re going round to all 18 counties to share the work that we do at Sporting Chance.

“The education that we’re putting forward to professional athletes is there to allow them to talk openly about their feelings and we’re here to educate the players and sow seeds with the players, it’s as simple as that really.”

Members To Receive Free Entry for Warwickshire clash

The Club can confirm that Members attending the away fixture against Warwickshire in the Specsavers County Championship, which has recently been moved from Edgbaston to Blackfinch New Road, will receive free entry.

The match is scheduled to start on Saturday 13 July and further to free entry, Essex Members will gain access to the Members only facility (The Graeme Hick Pavilion) by showing their Members Card to the relevant stewards.

The match was due to be played at Edgbaston, but with the fixture clashing with the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup schedule, Warwickshire will have to play at least one County Championship fixture away from their home ground.

Warwickshire explored the possibility of using an out ground and also considered moving the fixture to Edgbaston Community Sports Ground, but neither of these options were deemed practical. After careful consideration, the decision was then made to move the game to a nearby first-class venue, with Blackfinch New Road being the most suitable.

Cook, Lawrence and Westley named in MCC squad for Champion County Match

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has today announced Essex trio Sam Cook, Dan Lawrence and Tom Westley in its full squad for the Champion County Match against Surrey, which takes place in Dubai next month.

Stuart Broad will captain the side for the first-class four-day match, regarded as the traditional curtain-raiser to the English county season, which begins on Sunday 24th March at the ICC Global Cricket Academy Ground.

All three players were involved in the side which won the Specsavers County Championship in 2017, and this will be Westley’s second appearance in this fixture, as he also played for MCC in the 2009 Champion County Match against Durham at Lord’s.

John Stephenson, MCC Assistant Secretary (Cricket), said: “This is a talented and exciting team which we’re very much looking forward to seeing take on Surrey.

“This group boasts plenty of experience in county cricket and we are fortunate to have Stuart Broad to lead the team as captain. He will be able to pass on some of his knowledge to the younger players in the side.”

MCC XI to play Surrey at the ICC Global Cricket Academy, Dubai:

Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire) – captain
Tom Abell (Somerset)
Dominic Sibley (Warwickshire)
Tom Westley (Essex)
Dan Lawrence (Essex)
Will Rhodes (Warwickshire)
Peter Trego (Somerset)
Ben Cox (Worcestershire) – wicket-keeper
Dominic Bess (Somerset)
Stephen Parry (Lancashire)
Sam Cook (Essex)

Sir Alastair Cook Receives Knighthood

Sir Alastair Cook has officially received his knighthood for his services to cricket during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace earlier today.

The 34-year-old retired from international cricket last summer and hit a memorable century in his final Test match against India at The Oval.

Cook broke several records during his England career and retired from international cricket as England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer (12,472).

He also scored the most centuries for England (33), played the most Tests for England (161), taken the most catches in the field for England (175) and won the most Tests as England captain (59).

Derek Bowden, Chief Executive at Essex Cricket said: “Everyone associated with the Club is very proud of Alastair.

“He’s achieved so much within the game, and as well as being a fantastic cricketer and an elite professional, he’s been a great role model for so many people.

“His knighthood is a testament to his commitment to the game and his character both on and off the field.”

ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy Coming To Essex

Local cricket fans are in for a treat during late April as it’s been confirmed that the ICC Cricket World Cup trophy is coming to Essex.

The trophy will travel across the county on April 30 as part of the build-up to this summer’s competition in England and Wales.

First up, the trophy will be taken to Colchester Castle for a School’s Festival where it will be put on display for young fans throughout the morning.

Swiftly following its appearance in Colchester, the trophy will be brought to The Cloudfm County Ground where it will be showcased before the Essex Eagles take on Sussex Sharks in the Royal London One-Day Cup.
