McGrath Looking Forward To Pre-Season Trip

Essex are heading out to Abu Dhabi for 11 days of pre-season training in just over three weeks time, with Anthony McGrath’s side set to take on both Worcestershire and Somerset whilst out in the UAE.

50-over matches against both of the sides have been arranged, whilst Essex will also play Worcestershire again in a two-day game later on in the trip, and Head Coach Anthony McGrath believes this is the perfect preparation ahead of the 2019 campaign.

Speaking to the Essex Cricket website, Anthony McGrath said: “Pre-season is always a really exciting and motivating time and this year it’s no different.

“We have 50-over and two-day games lined up against strong opposition in Worcestershire and Somerset, so that will be a good test for the boys and a chance to gel with one another after the winter break.

“Some of the lads have been away since October of last year, so as well as training and preparing for the season itself, it’s a great chance for everyone to catch up and raise the team spirit levels.

“It’s not all socialising though, along with the matches we have some really intense warm weather training programmes lined up and the players will certainly be put through their paces.

“Ultimately, the work we do between now and early April will lay the foundations for what everyone at the Club hopes is going to be another very successful season.”

Mohammad Amir Set For Eagles Return

The Club are pleased to announce that the Pakistan international left-arm fast bowler, Mohammad Amir, will return to the Club for part of the 2019 Vitality Blast campaign.

The 26-year-old was a fan favourite during his first stint with Essex in 2017, where he took 14 wickets in both the NatWest T20 Blast and Specsavers County Championship, which included a memorable match-winning performance with career-best figures of 10-72 against Yorkshire at Scarborough.

Head Coach Anthony McGrath is thrilled that Amir has signed and said: “Mo is one of the most exciting bowling talents in the world and I’m ecstatic he’s going to be back with us.

“He has the ability to bowl at a fast pace whilst swinging the ball both ways and showed a real desire to come back to Chelmsford and be an Eagle again.

“Everyone has seen how devastating he can be with the ball and the talent he has, so I think alongside our other Overseas player, Adam Zampa, we’re going to have one of the most dangerous bowling attacks in the Vitality Blast this year.”

Amir is delighted to be joining the Eagles after enjoying success during the 2017 season and said: “I’m very excited to return to Chelmsford and re-join my Essex team mates. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here in 2017 and I’m looking forward to playing my role in the Club’s success this season.”

Amir will be available for eight Vitality Blast games during his spell with the Club, including the opening match against Middlesex at Lord’s on Thursday 18 July.

Due to family commitments, he will miss the next two matches against Surrey and Kent Spitfires, before making his eagerly anticipated return to The Cloudfm County Ground when Essex Eagles host Gloucestershire on Saturday 27 July.

Amir’s final match for the Eagles will be against Glamorgan in Chelmsford on Friday 16 August before he departs for his pre-arranged commitments in this year’s Caribbean Premier League.

Essex Eagles’ Overseas signings are in partnership with Seven Investment Management, the Eagles’ Vitality Blast shirt sponsor.

Zampa Set for Australia Tour as Siddle Misses Out

Australia have named their 15-man squad for the upcoming limited-overs tour of India, with the Club’s Vitality Blast overseas star, Adam Zampa named in the group.

However, Peter Siddle, who is set to join Essex for the upcoming 2019 campaign made his long-awaited return to the International One-Day International scene for the first time since 2010 earlier this year, misses out along with Billy Stanlake and Mitchell Marsh.

Siddle was selected for the Aussies’ recent Test squad and also ODI series against India, returning combined figures of 2-162 at 6.48 runs per over with the white ball. He has been a regular member of the Adelaide Strikers’ squad in this year’s KFC Big Bash.

Australia T20I/ODI squad: Aaron Finch (c), Pat Cummins (vc), Alex Carey (vc), Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Peter Handscomb, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, D’Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Turner, Adam Zampa.

The door remains firmly open for Siddle with National Selector, Trevor Hohns commenting, “Peter Siddle and Mitch Marsh are unfortunate to miss out, but our message throughout the summer remains true, with such a big schedule ahead opportunities may well present themselves,” Hohns said.

Coming into the squad are fast bowlers Kane Richardson and Nathan Coulter-Nile, and hard-hitting batsman Ashton Turner.

Australia will play two T20 internationals and five ODIs against India, starting with a T20I on Sunday 24 February.

Pre-Season Plans Confirmed

Essex are heading out to Abu Dhabi for 11 days of pre-season training in mid-March and Anthony McGrath’s side will be one of four first-class County Clubs preparing for the 2019 season in the UAE.

The squad will fly out to the Middle East on Sunday 10 March where they will join Worcestershire, Somerset and Warwickshire. 50-over matches against Worcestershire and Somerset are scheduled for back-to-back days on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 March, whilst a day two-game against Worcestershire has also been arranged to start on Monday 18 March.

Other various training programmes will take place before the players fly home on Thursday 21 March ahead of their final warm-up match against Cambridge MCCU at Fenner’s, starting on Tuesday 26 March.

Head Coach Anthony McGrath is looking forward to the trip and said: “Pre-season is always an exciting time. The squad will all be back together, the warm weather training does everybody the world of good and you can feel the anticipation and eagerness for the upcoming season.

“There’s some strong opposition for us to play against too. We’ve got 50-over games booked in against Worcestershire and Somerset, and we’re also going to face Worcestershire again in a two-day match later on in the trip.

“We’ll be using those matches to get ourselves organised and sharp ahead of the 2019 campaign and ensure that when things get underway against Hampshire in April, we’ll be as prepared as possible.”

Porter Unable To Prevent England Lions Loss

Jamie Porter has featured twice for the England Lions over the past three days, but unfortunately for the 25-year-old, both matches have ended in defeat.

Facing an India A side that included the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari, Porter only bowled five overs in the first match and was unable to take any wickets. He wasn’t required to bat as England were 285/7 following the 50 overs, and India reached their target of 286 with the first ball of the final over.

Earlier today the two sides faced off again at Thiruvananthapuram and India A romped to 303/6 during the 50 overs, with Porter taking the first wicket of the day in the form of Anmolpreet Singh.

Porter was unable to add to his tally during his ten overs and was the last man standing for the England Lions, who ended up all out for 165 and suffered their second defeat in three days.

The sides will face again on Sunday and if India A win, they’ll claim the series before the final two fixtures on Tuesday 29 January and Thursday 31 January.
