Changes to Playing Lengths & Boundary Sizes for Junior Cricket in Essex

Following the success of other sports such as netball, football and rugby, cricket has looked at clarifying the lengths of pitches across Junior cricket to provide the best outcome for players’ level of enjoyment, engagement and personal development. This has also been supported by a PhD study at Loughborough University as well as research in key cricket markets, such as New Zealand and Australia.

A vast amount of information and data was collected following a series of pilots in 2017 in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire. Additional analysis was also collected in 2018 from 20 leagues across the UK, along with the Under 13’s County Girls competition.

During the past two years in Essex we have also been piloting some of the new suggestions through the Eagles Nests and the Primary Development Group, which had a high level of success and positive feedback from players and parents.

A weakness of the current arrangement has highlighted an issue whereby a player could play junior matches on four different sized grounds in one season. To overcome this inconsistency, the County Youth Participation Group has taken the decision to adopt the revised ECB recommendations for pitch lengths for junior games across the county, which will also be rolled out in National County competitions too.

To support this decision here are some key findings from the research undertaken by the ECB around the smaller pitches for junior cricket:

As well as the many positives, we are fully aware that this change will impact the ground setup, but the plan is to run workshops during March in the five District areas to showcase the possibilities and provide an opportunity for questions and feedback. Work is also being carried out with local councils and the Essex Groundsman Association to discuss how grounds can cope with the formats.

In the meantime, the suggested playing conditions for the Under 9’s and Under 11’s Softball formats is to use the outfield as the playing area. With the hard ball competitions, on a pitch that can’t be marked out at 16 or 17 yards or there is no non-turf pitch available, a suggestion is that the batting is done at one end for a whole innings. In this instance, the bowler’s end marked by plastic/spring stumps and cones, which can be switched between innings.

Another noteworthy point is that these recommendations do allow coaches and officials to be proactive in games to help create an enjoyable environment for all participants. This may include the need for more developed players to bowl using the front line of the bowling crease rather than the popping crease, as one example. The key is that we look at developing the right environment for the 95% of players rather than the 1 or 2%.

It is appreciated that this could present a big change in how cricket is delivered to juniors, but we feel that with the research and pilots undertaken so far and the need for clarity on length of pitches around the county shows the need for change. We believe that this is positive progression for the game as we all work together to make Essex the number one homegrown county to ‘Excite, Engage and Enhance Clubs, players and volunteers.

Change To Warwickshire Away Fixture Confirmed

Essex’s Specsavers County Championship First Division fixture against Warwickshire, starting on Saturday 13 July, will take place at Worcestershire’s Blackfinch New Road.

With the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup taking place in England and Wales during June and July, Warwickshire will have to play at least one home County Championship fixture away from Edgbaston.

Warwickshire explored the possibility of using an out ground, but due to the scheduling of the ICC World Cup fixtures, the Edgbaston staff would not be available to assist in the running of a first-class match at an out ground in Warwickshire.

Warwickshire also considered moving the fixture to Edgbaston Community Sports Ground, but that ground isn’t capable of hosting first-class cricket at the current time. Therefore, Warwickshire made the decision to move the game to a nearby first-class venue, with Blackfinch New Road being the most suitable.

Neil Snowball, CEO of Warwickshire, commented: “We know that Blackfinch New Road is always a very popular venue for cricket fans and after plenty of discussion and consideration, we believe this is our best option for this important fixture.”

Porter Shines With The Ball For England Lions

Jamie Porter took 5-36 on Sunday but it wasn’t enough to prevent England Lions falling to a five-wicket defeat in their tour match against an Indian Board President’s XI at Thiruvananthapuram.

England Lions opened the batting but were skittled for 104 with the innings lasting just 22.3 overs. Sam Billings scored 52, but Will Jacks was the only other player to reach double figures with 14.

In reply Porter swiftly removed the top three, but an unbeaten 36 from Deepak Hooda and 34 for Captain Ishan Kishan moved the home side close to victory.

Porter finally got rid of Kishan and had Himmat Singh caught behind with the very next ball, but his efforts just delayed the inevitable and Hooda sealed the victory for the hosts in the 22nd over.

Porter commented: “It’s nice to get a few wickets to take a bit of confidence going into the [ODI] series.

“[The low target] made me hang in there a bit longer with my length and trying to find a bit of movement out of the pitch. In other situations, I may have got to changeups or used more bouncers, but I tried to be as aggressive as I could.

“Today shows that not all the wickets are going to be dustbowls, they are capable of leaving a bit of grass on it for the seamers, so it’s not all bad for us out here!”

Peter Siddle And Adam Zampa Suffer Defeat In ODI Series

Essex’s Australian duo of Peter Siddle and Adam Zampa fell to a 2-1 defeat to Virat Kohli’s India side in their three-game ODI series.

Australia won the first game at Sydney Cricket Ground last Saturday by 34 runs, with Siddle taking one wicket in his eight overs and Zampa missing out to Nathan Lyon as the specialist spinner.

India hit back in Adelaide three days later and levelled the series at one apiece. Again Zampa was unfortunate to miss out whilst Siddle was hit for 58 runs from him 8 overs without taking a wicket.

The winner takes all match took place earlier today (18/01/19) and this time Zampa got the nod. He didn’t disappoint and was only hit for 34 runs from his 10 overs, producing a very respectable economy rate of 3.40. Siddle made the early breakthrough and dismissed Rohit Sharma early on, but their efforts weren’t enough as India won by seven wickets, reaching their target of 231 runs in the final over.

Essex Cricket Remembers Ken Preston (1925-2019)

Essex County Cricket Club are saddened to hear of the passing of former player Ken Preston, aged 93.

Born in Goodmayes, Essex on 22 August 1925, Ken had a passion for cricket from a young age and made his debut for his home county in 1948 at the age of 22.

He injected pace into the Essex bowling attack straight away, but whilst playing football in the winter of 1948, Ken suffered a broken leg and subsequently missed the entire 1949 season.

Following his return to cricket, Ken bowled at a brisk fast-medium pace, but was still lethal with the ball. He took 1,160 first-class wickets for Essex in a career which spanned 17 years and lasted until 1964.

As well as being a superb bowler, Ken was also an entertaining tail-end batsman and an outstanding slip fielder, taking 350 catches during his career.

Essex County Cricket Club President, David Acfield, commented: “I remember Ken joining the staff at Brentwood School as a Cricket Coach.

“I had watched and admired him for many years, and as Captain of Brentwood School, it was a privilege to play under his guidance.
“I will always be grateful to him for his support throughout my career.”

Ken was still a regular attendee at The Cloudfm County Ground, especially for the annual President’s Day.

At the time of his death, Ken was the Club’s oldest former player, aged 93. He was a favourite with the Essex supporters and will be remembered as an exceptional player and a great servant to the Club.

Siddle and Zampa Named in Australia ODI Squad

Peter Siddle and Adam Zampa have been named in the Australia squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India.

Zampa has been a regular in the Australia ODI and T20 sides over recent years, but Siddle will be looking to play in his first one-day match for his country since November 2010.

Should the 34-year-old play in the series opener scheduled for 12 January at The SCG, it will be eight years and 67 days between Australia ODI appearances for Siddle. This will eclipse the record for the longest time between 50-over matches for an Australian, which is currently held by Tom Zoehrer and stands at six years and 282 days.

Australia’s selection panel chairman Trevor Hohns said it was “wonderful” to see Siddle return to the setup and compared him to a fine wine, saying he has gotten better with age.

He added: “His white-ball cricket has improved considerably the older he has got, and his selection is a great reward for his professionalism and strong leadership qualities.”

The first ODI takes place on January 12 at The SCG. The second game follows three days later on January 15 at Adelaide Oval and the series concludes at The MCG on January 18.

Harmer Ends 2018 As World’s Leading First-Class Wicket-Taker

Simon Harmer ended the 2018 calendar year as the highest first-class wicket-taker in the world after picking up 106 wickets for Essex and The Warriors.

The South-African bowled almost 1,000 overs across 24 matches last year, taking 57 wickets for Essex and 49 for The Warriors at an average of 25.93.

Mohammad Abbas followed closely, taking 104 first-class wickets for Leicestershire, Pakistan, Pakistanis and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited.

This achievement means the 29-year-old has taken over 100 first-class wickets in each of the seasons he’s played for Essex, having taken 102 dismissals in 2017.

Harmer recently signed a contract extension to stay at The Cloudfm County Ground until at least the end of the 2021 season and said: “I’m really excited to sign an extension and commit my future to this great Club.

“From the moment I arrived two years ago I was made to feel part of the group and at home in Chelmsford. It is a place I now consider my second home, so it was an easy decision for me to make.”

Club pay tribute to ‘remarkable achievement’

Following Friday evening’s announcement that Alastair Cook was included in the Queen’s New Year honours list, the Club congratulate Alastair on his fine achievement in recognition of his unbelievable international career and looking forward to having a ‘Sir’ in the ranks for the 2019 season.

“He has set numerous records, some of which may never be broken, and in the process has demonstrated the leadership and people skills required to reach the very top of the game. He is without doubt, the role model for others to follow.

“This is an honour he thoroughly deserves, and the Club sends Alastair and his family our congratulations and best wishes. We look forward to welcoming him back to Essex for the new season.”

“It has been a momentous year for Alastair since he signed off his international career in style at the Oval, so to cap it off by receiving a knighthood from the Her Majesty the Queen must be very special for him and his family.

“The 2019 season will soon be upon us and the opportunity to watch ‘Sir Alastair’ walk out to the middle at The Cloudfm County Ground over the next three years will be memorable for all of our Members and supporters.”
