Harmer Signs Contract Extension Until 2021

Essex County Cricket Club are pleased to announce that off-break bowler, Simon Harmer, has signed a contract extension and will stay with the Club until at least the end of the 2021 season.

The 29-year-old has made a huge impression since making the move to Chelmsford two years ago and is a fan favourite at The Cloudfm County Ground.

He played an instrumental role in Essex’s 2017 County Championship triumph, taking 74 wickets at an average of 19.31.

He followed that up with another solid season and finished as the Championship’s leading spin bowler, taking 57 wickets as Essex finished third in Division One.

Harmer is thrilled to extend his stay and said: “I’m really excited to sign an extension and commit my future to this great Club.

“From the moment I arrived two years ago I was made to feel part of the group and at home in Chelmsford. It is now a place I now consider my second home, so it was an easy decision for me to make.”

Harmer scooped three awards at the Club’s End of Season Gala Dinner, including the Bowler of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year, as well as the DeVines Player of the Year.

Harmer added: “It was an honour and a privilege to win each of those awards at the end of the season. Getting acknowledged by my peers is the probably the greatest award I could get, but being completely honest, winning trophies with my name on isn’t what I set out to do. Winning collective trophies with the team is what I enjoy and what we’ll be striving to achieve next year.

“We tasted success with the County Championship win in 2017 and it hurt not winning it again last year, so our goal for 2019 has to be to reclaim the title.”

Head Coach Anthony McGrath is delighted to see Harmer commit his future and added: “Harmy is a world-class bowler who can do serious damage with the ball.

“He’s taken over 100 first-class wickets in each of the last two calendar years, which in itself is an unbelievable achievement. He’s such a vital part of the bowling attack, so I’m thrilled he’ll be here for the foreseeable future.”

The Cloudfm County Ground To Host Two England Women’s Fixtures In 2019

ICC Women’s World T20 finalists England will host West Indies and Australia next summer, with six ODI’s, six IT20’s and one Test.

The Test match will form part of the Women’s Ashes which will once again be a multi-format points system.

The West Indies ODI’s will count towards the ICC Women’s Championship, with qualification for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2021 at stake.

The Cloudfm County Ground has been selected to host two of the fixtures, with England Women taking on West Indies in an ODI on Thursday June 13 and returning the following month to face Australia in the first Women’s Ashes IT20 match on Friday July 26.

Clare Connor, Director of England Women’s Cricket, said: “We are thrilled to host two world class women’s teams on our shores in the summer of 2019.

“As we have just seen in front of record crowds at the ICC Women’s World T20 in West Indies, both West Indies and Australia will be sure to provide a great challenge for us as well as skilful, entertaining cricket for the growing fan-base for the women’s game.”

Derek Bowden, Chief Executive of Essex County Cricket Club, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting not one, but two England Women’s fixtures in 2019.

“They’ve recently showcased their talents at the Women’s World T20 and I’m sure they’re going to put on a great show when they come to Chelmsford next year.”

Villiers Named In England Women Academy Intake For 2018

Mady Villiers has been named in the England Women Academy intake which has a new structure for 2018.

Previously the England Women’s Senior Academy (EWSA) was combined with the England Women’s Academy (EWA) but from now one only one squad has been named, known as the England Women’s Academy.

Villiers said: “I think I’m still in a bit of shock, purely because of how crazy the last few months have been in terms of my cricket since the KSL. I attended a few camps up at Loughborough with the women before they headed off to the World Cup, but I honestly didn’t expect to be included in the Academy this year. I’m just really grateful for the opportunity.

“I’ve played alongside or against most of the girls in the squad this year during the KSL and they’re a great bunch with heaps of talent. I’m looking forward to training with them and pushing myself to compete against them.

“I also want to thank everyone at Essex County Cricket Club for the continued support over the past few years!”

Jim Crapnell, Essex Women’s Head Coach said: “I’m delighted for Mady, her hard work over the last year or so has really paid off and she has really applied herself to all areas of her game. This is the next step in her journey, I’m sure she will thrive within the England environment and develop her game further.”

Following this at 5pm will be the highly anticipated Vitality Blast fixture announcement, as the Essex Eagles get set for 7 home games at The Cloudfm County Ground this summer!

Coming Up In 2020: Packages go on sale to new Members from Monday 25 November with the 2020 fixtures announced by the ECB in the coming weeks. After a remarkable season, follow the reigning Champions in what is set to be another exciting season at Chelmsford.

The Club also welcomes the Women’s Hundred competition to The Cloudfm County Ground, and Members will have a chance to enjoy more cricket with two London Spirit fixtures scheduled. Dates for these games and also the England Women’s fixtures in 2020 are still to be confirmed, with Members priority and discounts available.

Porter in the wicket for England Lions

Jamies Porter is back in action and taking wickets for the England Lions in their match against Pakistan A in Dubai this week. After his impressive figures of 12.2-4-22-3 in the first innings, Porter opened the bowling in the fianl innings of the match, striking with the first delivery of the innings.

It is set to be a fascinating final day in Abu Dhabi with the hosts requiring a further 180 runs for victory and the Lions chasing eight wickets.

Set 312 to win, Pakistan A closed day three on 132-2 after Abid Ali and Usman Salahuddin had come together to put on 120 for the third wicket on a placid pitch that’s yet to show any signs of deterioration.

England’s bowlers bowled with great commitment but little reward, despite Jamie Porter striking with the first ball of the innings and Mark Wood following on in the fourth to remove Shan Masood.

Pakistan’s imposing target was down in no small part to Joe Clarke, who continued his fine work from day two to make his maiden England Lions century.
The 22-year-old Nottinghamshire man – who recently moved from Worcestershire – made 107 with 10 fours to put the Lions ahead of the game, but Pakistan A’s fightback leaves it right in the balance.
