Bopara & ten Doeschate Victorious With Balkh Legends

Essex stars Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschate were triumphant with Balkh Legends yesterday, as their side became the first champions of the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) T20, beating Kabul Zwanan by four wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Kabul Zwanan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and elected to bat first, but lost both Luke Ronchi and Hazratullah Zazai inside the opening five overs. Bopara then took the important wicket of South-African Colin Ingram and Kabul went on to make 132 for 9 after the 20 overs.

Chasing 133, Legends lost both Colin Munro and Darwish Rasooli to Wayne Parnell in the opening over, but Chris Gayle smashed 56 runs from 34 balls to steady the ship, accompanied by ten Doeschate and Bopara.

Essex skipper ten Doeschate contributed 12 in a partnership of 31 with Gayle whilst Bopara and the West-Indian combined for 50 before Gayle was out to Rashid Khan.

It was too late though as Bopara ensured that the Legends reached their target of 133 with 11 balls to spare, finishing on 32 not out.

EASST continue outstanding support of cricket in Essex

The Essex and Southend Sports Trust have continued their unbelievable support for cricket across the County, with a grant of £30,000.

The cheque presentation to the Essex Cricket in the Community took place during the final home match of the season against Worcestershire, which included Essex County Cricket Club Chairman, John Faragher, who was joined by EASST’s Peter Butler and Joe Simms.

The funds will be divided into four main focus areas with £10,000 dedicated to both developing the Essex Women’s programme, £10,000 to help maintain Garon Park as a sustainable venue for performance cricket, £5,000 towards the Junior Pathway and £5,000 towards the Girl’s Schools Coaching programme. This is part of a £90,000 three-year commitment created to benefit the growth of cricket in the county.

EASST has contributed over £750,000 to grassroots cricket in Essex over a last 15 years and this has continued earlier this year with the launch of the Small Grants Scheme for Cricket, which saw a £25,000 contribution aimed at developing cricket in Essex and East London.

EASST also contributed to the funding of the Allen Ford Group Graham Gooch Cricket Centre refurbishment, which will continue to help develop the next crop of talent through the Essex County Cricket Club Academy.

EASST Chairman, Peter Butler said: “EASST cricket programme in Essex and East London has really grown in 2018 and in total we have made grants of approaching £100,000 in support of community and recreational cricket in our area. The Small Grants Programme for Cricket is supporting essential purchases by several local cricket clubs and we have made a number of commitments towards clubs planning to rebuild or extend their cricket pavilions.’

Essex Cricket Chief Executive, Derek Bowden said, “EASST has been a long-standing supporter of Essex Cricket, especially with investment into grassroots projects across the county.

“It’s fantastic to see the positive impact these funds have on the development of cricket in Essex, especially as it benefits people of all ages, gender and background, which is a key objective shared across everything we do at Essex Cricket.

Capital Kids Cricket unveils Indoor Cricket Competition at Lord’s

The London-based charity Capital Kids Cricket (CKC) unveiled details of the largest ever primary school indoor cricket competition in the UK at Lord’s on Friday (October 12). Among many guests’ children from 2 schools Elmhurst Primary from Newham and Essendine Primary from Westminster attended and played games alongside the main press launch.

Based on the hugely successful US Little League baseball format, it will bring together 150 schools across 19 London boroughs playing more than 250 matches over five months with the finals at Lords next 28 March 2018.

The winning school will receive the William Greaves Trophy, named after the cricket-loving writer and journalist who helped found the charity 30-years ago. Since then, more than 200,000 boys and girls at state schools and communities in London and neighbouring counties where cricket is not played have been given the opportunity to play the game.

The ambitious project has been made possible by the unique sponsorship of a California-based IT and Artificial Intelligence company, Moogsoft, whose British founder and CEO, Phil Tee, is a passionate cricket fan keen to give hundreds of London children the chance to play the game he has loved since childhood.

The company has offices in Kingston-on-Thames and there are plans to use its pioneering technology to engage more children by allowing them to see online live games and scores using social media.

Explaining the decision to support the competition, Mr Tee, who played cricket at school, club and university, said: “My interest in Capital Kids is really to support kids in the enjoyment of the best sport on planet earth. This game, along with the joy it brings, builds character, teaches restraint and focus, as well as being a fantastic platform to take on the adventures of life. And just like facing a nippy, aggressive opening bowler, the advice of ‘don’t duck and channel your aggression’ are as relevant in the boardroom as in the middle.”

He continued: “My passion for cricket began as a child, being used by my more talented elder brother as bowling practice! I suppose the moment that crystalized it was watching the immortal 1981 Headingley Ashes match where Botham came back from losing the captaincy to terrorise the Australians. Enthusiasm has always outstripped talent, but through school and University I was a keen cricketer, playing indoors in the winter and 2-3 times a week in the summer! I opened the batting for the University 2nd XI, captained the 3rd XI and once turned out for the 1st XI.

“Despite not playing very much anymore, I am a very keen fan and until I moved to the UK never ever missed the Lords test. I have exchanged the passion for competition for building businesses. Perhaps the discipline of captaincy and taking on the first ball of an innings prepares you well for the risk and reverses that are part of the journey in building high tech companies. Along the way I have created two public companies, had three trade sales and currently am busy building another high growth software business.”

CKC Chairman Haydn Turner said the UK-US partnership will allow thousands of children who can’t currently play cricket a ‘special opportunity’ to enjoy the game and learn new ‘life skills’ of teamwork, friendship, leadership and support while taking part in the world’s biggest primary school cricket league.

He said: “It is amazing that the inspiration for Cricket Little League is American, and that an important US company is enabling this London school initiative to be realised. Thousands of children will start their cricket journey at the finals at Lords perhaps finishing when they play for England at Lord’s.”

Among those CKC has helped when he was a schoolboy is Ravi Bopara, who scored 143 at Lords against the West Indies in 2009 and played 13 Tests and 120 one-day internationals for England.
Shahidul Alam Ratan, CEO of CKC said, “This is one of the first opportunities for children to take up cricket as a regular sport. Playing at the Lords also inspires many young people. We are very grateful to Moogsoft for supporting this competition. We are introducing some exciting features in this competition by using live scores in selected games, live streaming using social media and will be piloting commentary by the school children in Grand Final.

We are also hoping to run a pilot programme of AIOps (Artificial Intelligence operations) club in a primary school with the expertise from Moogsoft. I hope that this AIOps club will be very exciting for many kids and give some insight into AI.

Capital Kids Cricket is committed to work in state schools particularly in deprived areas of London. I am sure the partnership between Moogsoft and CKC will create more opportunities in cricket and other skills of many young people”.

Capital Kids Cricket is a cricket delivery charity work across inner London boroughs. Since 1989 CKC is providing cricketing opportunities to state schools, communities and clubs. Some of our cricket projects we are running key London hospitals children unites. The key projects CKC runs are:

• Cricket in schools

Surrey V Essex Championship Scorecard

Skipper Signs Contract Extension

Essex County Cricket Club are pleased to announce that Club Captain, Ryan ten Doeschate, has signed a one-year contract extension and will remain with the side until at least the end of the 2019 season.

The 38-year-old has had another impressive campaign, averaging 38.55 in the Specsavers County Championship, with his Essex side finishing third in Division One behind Surrey and Somerset.

The Dutchman joined Essex back in 2003 and has become a popular figure with both his team mates and the fans at The Cloudfm County Ground.

In 2016, his first season as Club Captain, ten Doeschate led the Club back to Division One. The following year he and his team defied all the odds to clinch a first County Championship title for 25 years, with ten Doeschate playing a vital part of it.

Ryan is delighted to sign an extension and said: “My affinity for Essex just grows stronger and I’m really pleased with the way the team is developing and the direction the Club is taking.

“We’re continually striving to improve and I’m looking forward to the challenges we’ll face, and I feel I can still offer value to this team.”

Head Coach Anthony McGrath is also pleased to see ten Doeschate prolong his stay and said: “Tendo is a massive player for us, both on the field and in the dressing room, and I’m delighted he’s staying for another season.

“He’s a natural leader and has led this team to some fantastic triumphs in recent years and hopefully there will be more to come.”

Plom Pens Professional Contract

Essex County Cricket Club are pleased to announce that Jack Plom has signed his first professional contract with the Club, lasting until the end of the 2020 season.

The 19-year-old came through the Essex Academy and has featured heavily for the Second XI team this season, taking 18 wickets in 7 Second XI County Championship matches, with his best performance seeing him take 6 wickets for 33 runs.

Plom has been in and around the first team set up at Essex this year whilst also being one of the stand out players for the Young Lions during their recent series win against South Africa U19, taking 13 wickets across the 4 matches.

Plom is thrilled and said: “I’m really excited to sign my first professional contract and I can’t wait to get going next season.

“I’ve now been on three England U19 tours which was really good for my development, and I want to crack on from that and progress further as a player with Essex.”

Cook and Beard Visit Cloudfm Academy Programme

Ahead of Academy Week at Cloudfm, Sam Cook and Aaron Beard met up with our sponsor’s 12 new apprentices to lend their support and give them some advice about achieving their goals through hard work, focus and determination.

Cloudfm’s success depends on the initiative and problem-solving skills of their team, and their dedicated Academy facility is the foundation of this.

Sam Cook said: “There’s a lot of skills that are transferable between cricket and the apprentice roles here at Cloudfm, so it’s a pleasure to come in and speak to the new staff and offer them some support and advice.”
