Matt Dixon to leave Essex CCC

Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that Matt Dixon is to leave the Club at the conclusion of his contract.

The Australian bowler joined Essex in 2016 from Western Australia and has played in 7 first-class matches for Essex, taking 20 wickets at an average of 31.80.

His best figures for the Club were 5 for 124 which came in a match against Kent on the final day of the 2016 season as Essex were crowned the Specsavers County Championship Division Two title winners.

Dixon spent time on loan at Durham earlier this season but has found his first-team opportunities limited.

Anthony McGrath said: “Matt has been a great member of the squad and has always been extremely professional both on and off the field.

“Unfortunately he has found game time hard to come by and we have agreed it’s in his best interests to start afresh elsewhere. We’d like to thank him for his commitment and wish him the best of luck for the future.”

Peter Siddle Wins DeVines Player Of The Month

Peter Siddle has been named the DeVines Player of the Month for August after picking up 76% of the votes, beating Varun Chopra, Dan Lawrence and Ryan ten Doeschate to the award.

The Australian was impressive with the ball during August and took a total of 17 wickets, with his most notable displays coming against Somerset and Hampshire in back to back County Championship matches.

He took a 5’fer against Somerset and ended the match with strong figures of 7 for 129. He improved on that the following week, again taking a 5’fer against Hampshire and finishing the match with figures of 7 for 71, guiding Essex to a win inside 3 days.

Alastair Cook unavailable for remaining County Championship games

After yesterday’s victory at the Kia Oval completed a busy international summer with a 4-1 win over India in the Specsavers Test Series, the England management have asked for the majority of the squad to take a break before winter trips to Sri Lanka and West Indies.

Player availability:

Alastair Cook, along with Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes have all been made unavailable and won’t play in any of the remaining Specsavers County Championship fixtures.

Sam Curran and Ollie Pope are both available to play for Surrey in their remaining fixtures against Somerset and Essex.

Moeen Ali is available to play for Worcestershire in their final fixture against Yorkshire from September 24-27, but not for the upcoming game at Essex.

Essex Womens XI 2018 Season Review

The Essex Women team had a blistering start to their County Championship Division Two One-Day campaign, winning their first three games against Northamptonshire, Derbyshire and Sussex.

All three games exemplified how impressive Essex’s bowling attack was, most notably during the match against Derbyshire. After being bowled out for 143 and facing a first defeat of the season, Essex flipped the game on its head and took the final 6 wickets for just 9 runs. Derbyshire were all out for 139 and Essex earned the most unlikely win after an outstanding comeback.

Unfortunately the sides form didn’t continue, and back-to-back defeats against Devon and Wales meant that Essex finished sixth in the league table, which put them into a winner takes all play-off game against Suffolk.

Essex were missing a few key players for the match, including Dutch international Sterre Kalis who was contracted to Queensland in the WNCL, and Mady Villiers who was playing her first Kia Super League final for Surrey Stars.

Essex were put into bat and both openers had a good start before being dismissed and leaving the team 53-2, but Cordelia Griffith and Jessica Bird started to rebuild the innings, both making quick half-centuries.

Bird brought up her hundred with a sweeping boundary and soon after, Griffith followed by reaching her century. Bird was eventually caught and bowled for 128 off 109 balls, with her innings including 18 fours and 2 sixes.

Following the 50 overs, Essex were 374 for 3, with Griffith scoring 155* from 120 balls. Her innings included 23 fours and 1 six and Suffolk had a target of 375 to retain their Division Two position.

Essex bowler Poppy Timson made a great start with the ball and claimed the wicket of danger woman Penny Everett for 19, which set the tone for the rest of the innings.

Jess Saunders put up a fight for with 15 but soon fell wicket to the bowling of Beth Dodd, and Suffolk, who were only playing 10 players due to injury, managed to reach 81 all out. The commanding performance meant that Essex had won by 293 runs, but more importantly, they had secured their Division Two status for next year.

Cordelia Griffith, Captain of the One-Day side said: “Throughout the season our bowling and fielding unit has been outstanding.

“Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement and I’m confident with another successful winter under our belts, we’ll be challenging next year.”

The T20 campaign also proved successful for the side. After being relegated to Division Three in 2017, the team won 7 of their 8 games and earned promotion straight back to Division Two.

Kelly Castle, Captain of the Essex T20 side said: “Although we were in a lower division this year, it allowed us showcase the talent we have and progress as a team.

“Looking to next year, I hope we can continue to develop over the winter and be competitive in Division Two.”

Head Coach Jim Crapnell said: “Going into the season our aim was to maintain our position in the 50 over competition and attain promotion from Division Three in the T20 competition.

“Thankfully we achieved both and we’re looking forward to the challenges that the 2019 campaign will bring. We have a good core of players and we’ll work hard over the winter to improve individually and as a team.”

Porter talks recent batting form, England and wickets

Jamie Porter’s recent batting form has come as a surprise to most Essex fans, but the improvement hasn’t come as a shock to Porter himself at all.

The seamer, called up by England for 3 Test squads this summer, had managed just 32 Specsavers County Championship runs before he went out to face Surrey at Chelmsford last week. He not only more than doubled his aggregate during the match, in adding 12 and 31, he surpassed his previous highest total of 9 in both innings.

Porter explained: “I was getting frustrated. I was going out there, trying to hold up an end and I was facing quite a few balls, but probably only getting 2 runs and then getting out, and that’s not really a contribution.

“I’ve been working with our batting coaches and, of course, Mags [Anthony McGrath]. I probably took it upon myself when I went away with England. Their approach to batting down the order is a little bit different, they like to be more aggressive, play more shots and try and make a significant contribution.

“I worked with some of the coaches there and did a lot with Paul Farbrace, who is really good. He worked on a few things that went well and helped get me moving a little better.

“Runs down the order are very valuable, and I want to get selected in that Test squad. I think if I can start contributing down the order for Essex, that’s definitely going to help my cause.”

Porter contributed 31 of the 51 runs in the ninth-wicket partnership with Ravi Bopara in a 36-ball stay at the wicket as Essex made Surrey bat again.

“We agreed that if we were just going to block and bat time, eventually there would be a ball with my name on it. Runs were more important, and it was a situation where we had nothing to lose, we were so far behind the game.

“They were putting the field up for Ravi and there were plenty of opportunities for me to score, so we decided to take as many runs as we could. I decided that anything full I was going to have a go, if it was short I was just going to get out of the way.”

Back with the ball, Porter has 35 Championship wickets with 3 matches remaining – starting at Trent Bridge today against Nottinghamshire – to reach 50 for a fourth successive season.

Porter said: “I haven’t really got a target, to be honest. If I was bowling badly I probably would, but this game just gone [against Surrey] I don’t think I could have bowled any better and I only took two wickets.

“The ball’s coming out well, and I felt very good with my rhythm and everything so I’m feeling pretty confident about the remainder if the season. The most important thing as a team is that we’re winning, and I want to contribute to that.”

MATCH PREVIEW | NOTTINGHAMSHIRE v ESSEX

Essex welcome a new face into the ranks for this week’s trip to Trent Bridge to face Nottinghamshire in the Specasvers County Championship clash.

Murali Vijay has joined the county for the last three matches of the season as the Overseas replacement for Peter Siddle, who has returned to Australia ahead of the commencement of their domestic season and the Big Bash League.

Indian Test opener Vijay, now 34, has played 59 Test matches for his country, the latest at Lord’s against England last month. The right-hander is no stranger to Chelmsford having scored 53 when the tourists met Essex at the back-end of July in the three-day warm-up match.

He made his debut for India in 2008 and has since scored nearly 4,000 Test runs @ 39.33, including 12 centuries. His first-class record includes 8,637 runs, with 24 centuries in 124 matches.

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath is thrilled to add Vijay to the side. “We’re delighted that Vijay has chosen to come here. He’s a great batsman who can score runs at the top of the order,” he enthused.

“His run-scoring ability means he can be the difference-maker in a game, and that skill is something we were looking to bring in towards the end of the season and something that we’re excited about.

“The campaign is coming to an end and we have some really big games over the next month, so getting someone in with the experience and international quality that Vijay possesses could make all the difference for us.”

Essex all-rounder, Ravi Bopara, is also delighted to have Vijay in the side as they seek to secure Division One status for another season during the closing weeks of the campaign.

“He is a class performer and I expect him to bring stability to our batting,” he said.” We’ve got three games to go and we’ve got to make an impression in those matches. It’s an important game for us against Nottinghamshire. Let’s hope it’s a good deck for our batters but on the other side, if it seams around, then hopefully there will be something in it for our bowlers.”

Reflecting on the comprehensive defeat by Surrey, he stated: We were outplayed from day one by a very, very good Surrey team. They were in the same mindset as we were last year when we just knew we were going to win when we turned up. We knew we were going to bowl sides out and score loads of runs.

“Obviously that hasn’t happened for us this year but we are still doing alright. But there is no complacency in our dressing room, we know we’ve got to keep working hard and everyone will continue to do that.

“We can still finish third and overall, that would be a decent return for the season.”

A 13-man squad has been named for the match against Nottinghamshire, who themselves currently sit in fourth place and seven points behind Essex, although the home side have played one more match.

Essex squad to face Nottinghamshire:

Ryan ten Doeschate (27) (captain)
Ravi Bopara (25)
Nick Browne (10)
Matt Coles (1)
Sam Cook (16)
Simon Harmer (11)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Michael Pepper (19)
Jamie Porter (44)
Matt Quinn (94)
Murali Vijay (8)
Tom Westley (21)
Adam Wheater (31)

Indian International To Join Essex

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce the signing of Indian batsman, Murali Vijay, until the end of the 2018 Specsavers County Championship campaign.

The 34-year-old will join up with the squad immediately, following Peter Siddle’s return to Australia.

Vijay has played in 57 Test matches for India, averaging 40.70, and has represented Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, and King XI Punjab in the IPL. He also opened the batting in the recent Tourist match between Essex and India at The Cloudfm County Ground, scoring 53 runs in the first innings.

As a talented batsman with vast experience of International cricket, Vijay will bring quality and runs to Anthony McGrath’s squad.

Head Coach Anthony McGrath is thrilled to add Vijay to the side and said: “We’re delighted that Murali has chosen to come here, he’s a great batsman who can score runs at the top of the order.

“Vijay’s run-scoring ability means he can be the difference-maker in a game, and that skill is something we were looking to bring in towards the end of the season and something that we’re excited about.

“The campaign is coming to an end and we have some really big games over the next month, so getting someone in with the experience and international quality that Murali possesses could make all the difference for us.”

Vijay is also excited to be heading to Essex for the end of the Specsavers County Championship and said: “I was here with the India side about a month ago and saw first-hand just how good the crowd is.

“I can’t wait to play for Essex and hopefully win some matches.”

Siddle Set For Essex Return

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce that Peter Siddle has signed a two-year contract with the Club.

The Australian has made a huge impression both on and off the field during his two spells at Essex this season and has committed his future until the end of the 2020 campaign.

This week’s match against Surrey at The Cloudfm County Ground was his final appearance this year before heading back to Australia, but he’s already excited about the prospect of spending a full summer in Chelmsford next season.

Siddle commented: “I have loved my time at the Club so far with the players and staff giving me a great welcome, and I really feel part of the team at Essex.

“As an overseas player, I am always committed to taking the whole experience in and not just picking up my money and being on my way at the end of a contract.

“There is a wealth of talent in this squad who are hungry for more success and I am thrilled that I can join them for a further two season and be part of it.

“I’m also really excited to play alongside Cooky [Alastair Cook], we’ve had some really great battles in the past and it’s going to be fun to play on the same side as him rather than against him.”

Anthony McGrath said: “We are ecstatic that Peter has agreed to be with us for a further two years. We have all seen the qualities he brings to this squad and complements our bowling attack perfectly.

“He has a wealth of experience and the professional attitude he applies every time he heads out onto the field is commendable, as well as being a great person to have around the Club off the field.”
