Alastair Cook Nominated for Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year

Alastair Cook’s farewell century for England has been revealed as one of the five nominations for the greatest sporting moment of the year for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2018, and you can vote for him by clicking here.

This is a new award for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, with the winning moment being announced at the ceremony on Sunday 16 December.

As we all know, Alastair bowed out of international cricket against India in September, and he did it in style, by scoring a century, just as he started it.

He was given a standing ovation by the crowd at The KIA Oval after reaching three figures in what was clearly an emotional and heart-warming moment for everyone, then again when he left the field for the final time after being caught behind for 147.

Cooky finished his international career with plenty of England Test accolades, including having scored more runs and made more centuries for England than any other Test player.

Bopara Victorious With Northern Warriors

Ravi Bopara followed up his APL T20 win with Balkh Legends by claiming his second trophy in as many months, with his Northern Warriors side sealing T10 League glory in Sharjah on Sunday night thanks to a 22-run win over Pakhtoons.

Bopara’s side reached the final by winning two out of their three Group B games and by beating Maratha Arabians in an eliminator game, having lost to Pakhtoons in the final qualifier a few days before.

In the final itself, Bopara wasn’t required to bat with his side reaching 140 for 3 after the 60 balls. In the only over he bowled, he took the wicket of Muhammad Kaleem and finished with figures of 1 for 11.

Ravi only batted once in the tournament mainly due to the firepower of the top order, which included, Lendl Simmons, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell and Rovman Powell. With the ball he took an impressive 6 wickets for 96 runs over the 6 matches.

Following the news that Bopara has recently signed a new contract with Essex County Cricket Club, the crowd at The Cloudfm County Ground can look forward to seeing Ravi in action next year.

Bopara Signs Contract Extension Until 2019

Essex County Cricket Club are delighted to announce that all-rounder, Ravi Bopara, has signed a contract extension that will see him remain with the Club until the end of the 2019 season.

The 33-year-old made his first-class debut for Essex back in 2002 and following James Foster’s retirement, he is now the Club’s longest serving player.

Bopara said: “I’m glad to have signed a new one-year deal with Essex County Cricket Club. I’m excited for the upcoming season, which will be my 18th year with the Club and at 33, I still have plenty of years left.”

Bopara ended the season as the Club’s leading scorer in the Specsavers County Championship but is targeting team rather than individual success next season, and said: “We had a good campaign in the County Championship last year, but know we can do better. We have a good blend of youth and experience in the dressing room and the depth to challenge for the title, so that’s our goal for next season.”

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath is elated to see Bopara commit his future to the Club and added: “Ravi is an integral part of team and will have a big role to play for us next year.

“He’s a local lad and has a wealth of cricketing experience, making him a great figure to have in the dressing room.”
