Second XI To Face Durham In Championship Final

Essex will play Durham in the Second XI Championship Final next month, with both teams having won their respective divisions.

Essex topped the Southern Division whilst Durham ran away with the Northern Division, meaning the sides will once again face off having met at T20 Finals Day earlier this month.

Essex won that fixture by 10 wickets, with Paul Walter smashing 37 off just 12 balls and Sam Cook taking 3 wickets for 21 runs, but next month’s fixture is expected to be a lot closer.

The sides will meet at Emirates Riverside on 4 September with the match scheduled to start at 10:30AM.

Match Report | For the second time in three days, Essex were frustrated by the weather when rain left them with a point after their match with Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl was abandoned after just 7.5 overs.

Essex had also been left to settle for a point when the match with Gloucestershire on Friday at The Cloudfm County Ground fell victim to rain without a ball bowled on that occasion.

The match with Hampshire was delayed by 75 minutes after morning rain and following two inspections of the pitch, the umpires decided that an 18 overs per side match could take place starting at 3.45 p.m.

But the weather always looked the likely winner. Put into bat, the Eagles had reached 72 for four when heavy rain swept across the ground and the match was finally called off at 4.50 p.m.

In the little play that did take place, Paul Walter hit 22 in just nine balls that included 1 six and 3 fours before he was bowled by Mujeeb Ur Rahman. The Afghanistan spin bowler completely bemused Walter with his first delivery to leave the Eagles 49 for three in the sixth over.

Earlier openers Adam Wheater and Varun  Chopra had fallen to Chris Wood inside three overs for 1 and 15 respectively as the Eagles reeled to 23 runs for 2 and leaving Ryan ten Doeschate and Dan Lawrence the responsibility of giving the innings some substance.

They had carried the score onto 72 before a horrific mix-up between the pair brought about the dismissal of ten Doeschate for 17.

Ten Doeschate played the ball into the offside and as both batsmen set off for the run, Lawrence decided against the run and just made his ground at the non-striker’s end before the wicket was broken by James Vince’s throw form cover.

However, Garth Berg then pounced on the ball and threw down the stumps at the opposite end where ten Doeschate was left stranded in the middle of the pitch. The skipper’s misery was compounded when the players scurried from the field immediately as the weather closed in.

Dan Lawrence was 16 not out from 8 balls at that stage before the interruption proved terminal.

The next action for the Eagles takes them to Lord’s to face Middlesex on Thursday night in the penultimate match of the season in the competition.

MATCH PREVIEW | ESSEX EAGLES V HAMPSHIRE

The Eagles are in action on Sunday when they face Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton in a Vitality Blast match that commences at 2:30pm.

The teams fought out a thrilling tie in the reverse fixture at The Cloudfm County Ground 3 weeks ago. Chasing the Hampshire score of 170 for 5, the Eagles required 13 runs to win from the final over. Although 11 runs were collected from the first 5 deliveries, including a 6 and a 4 by Ravi Bopara, he was run out attempting a match-winning second run off the final ball as the Eagles closed their innings on 170 for 8.

Yesterday rain forced the abandonment of the match with Gloucestershire at Chelmsford without a ball bowled.

Bopara admitted that the Eagles were frustrated about Friday’s call-off, saying: “It was a shame because we sat down after the defeat by Glamorgan earlier in the week and talked about how we wanted and needed to change things and how we want to approach T20 cricket.

“Our T20 cricket has obviously been below par this season but it has been a good learning curve. We have been trying some ideas which have not come off but now it’s all about learning for next year and at least we know what we need to do to improve for next season.

“We had some good plans in place as to how we wanted to change that and they were going to be implemented against Gloucestershire but now we’ll have to wait until Sunday to see how those ideas work out.”

2nd XI Pipped to T20 Title

Lancashire were crowned 2nd XI T20 champions after narrowly overcoming Essex after a rain-affected Finals Day in Arundel.

Lancashire beat Gloucestershire and Essex beat Durham in the semi-finals, both of which were restricted to 5 overs per side.

Sam Cook starred for Essex in the semi-final win, taking 3 wickets for 21 runs and Paul Walter dominated with the bat, scoring 37 from just 12 balls as Essex secured a 10-wicket victory.

Essex won the toss for the final and elected to field first. It seemed a good decision as Lancashire were restricted to 66-9, with Walter claiming 4 wickets for 12 runs.

However, the Red Rose bowlers defended their target well with left-arm spinner Tom Hartley taking 3 wickets for 12 runs, which included the dismissals of dangermen Walter, Ashar Zaidi and Rishi Patel.

Essex were limited to 41-7 after their 9 overs which resulted in Lancashire winning by 25 runs and taking the title.

Essex will be back in action in the 2nd XI Championship Final in several weeks time. They’ll again face off with Durham at Emirates Riverside and will be looking to end the season on a celebratory note.

MATCH PREVIEW | ESSEX EAGLES V GLOUCESTERSHIRE

The Eagles will be looking to end their winless streak in the Vitality Blast competition when they entertain Gloucestershire on Friday at The Cloudfm County Ground (start time 7pm).

The Eagles have named a 14-man squad and are able to welcome back batsman Dan Lawrence who has missed the last 3 matches through injury.

Tuesday’s defeat to Glamorgan means it’s now 4 matches since the Eagles picked up a point. It was the first time that the Eagles had been beaten in this format in Cardiff, having won 5 of the 7 previous encounters with 1 match abandoned.

Once again, Varun Chopra topped the list of run-scorers in Wales when he recorded his fifth half-century of the competition this summer. He scored 54 and remains the only Eagles batsman to surpass 50 in T20 cricket this season.

The Eagles now have 4 Vitality Blast matches left to play, starting with Gloucestershire before they meet fellow strugglers Hampshire and Middlesex next week at Southampton and Lord’s respectively. They conclude their Vitality Blast season with a visit from Kent next Friday (August 17).

Gloucestershire though have everything to play for as they are right in the mix for a place in the quarter-finals, but the Eagles will be hoping to add to their favourable home history in meetings between the teams in T20 cricket at Chelmsford.

The Eagles have 4 four of the 6 contests with the West Country outfit recording just the 1 success, whilst the fixture last year was abandoned without a ball bowled.

Pride is very much at stake for the Eagles and they will be anxious to rediscover the winning thread, not only to move away from the bottom of the South Group table, but to discover some positive form ahead of their County Championship fixtures which resume in little more than a week’s time.
