Neil Wagner set for Essex return

Essex County Cricket Club are pleased to announce that Neil Wagner will return for the culmination of the 2017 season.

The New Zealand International will be available for the last three Specsavers County Championship matches during September, having made a great impression on everyone at the Club during the first half of the season.

Looking to help take Chris Silverwood’s team to the Division One title, Wagner will replace Mohammad Amir when he returns to Pakistan for International duty or following the expected arrival of his first child.

Head Coach Silverwood, is pleased to bring in a familiar face and to have another top-quality bowler at his disposal for the season run-in.

Silverwood said: “Mohammad has made a real impact across all forms of the game since arriving at the Club and has shown his world-class ability to all Essex fans.

“Following the well documented guidance from the PCB on Mohammad’s availability and the expected arrival of his first child, we have decided to re-sign Neil.

“He will come straight back into the team and make an equally positive impact to the side after his successful spell with us earlier on in the season.

“He was keen to return and it is a no-brainer to get another International quality bowler into the squad for the climax of the Division One season.”

Wagner is equally as excited to rejoin the Club and added: “I loved every minute of my spell with Essex earlier on in the season. Everyone around the Club made me feel welcome and we had some very good results as a side.

“I am now looking forward to linking back up with the squad and seeing what we can all achieve together during the conclusion of the season.”

MATCH PREVIEW | Essex v Somerset

With their white ball season done and dusted, Division One leaders Essex can now concentrate on Championship cricket as the final run-in to the 2017 season takes shape.

The County currently enjoy a 41-point lead in the race for the title and have five matches left to play starting with the visit of Somerset to The Cloudfm County Ground on Monday.

Essex are the only unbeaten team in Division One and will be hoping to take another step nearer the title they last won in 1992 by completing the “double” over Somerset who suffered an 8-wicket defeat at Taunton when the two sides clashed back in April.

The West Country outfit are involved in a battle to protect their top-flight status and arrive at Chelmsford in seventh position holding one of the two relegation places and 20 points adrift of sixth place Middlesex.

However, despite their comfortable points advantage, Essex Head Coach Chris Silverwood is fully aware of the challenge that lies ahead of his squad starting with the Somerset fixture.

“We are under no illusions that there are some very, very good sides in this division and we have a lot of hard work ahead of us in the remaining weeks of the season,” he acknowledged.

“These are very exciting times for us and we are all looking forward to getting back to playing a format that, so far, we have done really well in this season.

“If we want to keep pushing home our advantage, then we have to continue playing some very good cricket and to pick up from where we left off in the Championship.

“Somerset will present a tough challenge and people should remember that they were challenging for the title last year so, although they are at the wrong end of the table, it’s not that they are a bad side and we will treat them with a lot of respect.

“That means sticking to our processes and game plans that have served us well so far and working hard to ensure that they work for us again.”

Porter excited about return to Championship cricket

Essex opening bowler Jamie Porter has taken to Division One cricket like a duck to water and is excited to get the red ball back in his hand on Monday against Somerset.

After a period of NatWest T20 Blast cricket, Essex’s attentions turn back to Championship cricket and Chris Silverwood’s men sit top of the pile.

With no other distractions, Porter believes the teams focus will be fully on achieving the once unthinkable and claiming the Division One title.

The 24-year-old said: “The NatWest T20 Blast campaign perhaps didn’t go as we planned as a team or from a personal point of view. We gave ourselves a chance of reaching the knockout stages but unfortunately fell slightly short.

“Our attentions now turn back to red-ball cricket and we are all excited about that proposition. We are well placed at the moment but there is still a lot of work ahead of us to achieve the dream of winning the Division One title.”

After a week off, Porter is refreshed and ready for the challenge of Somerset and believes their league position does not reflect the team they are.

The Chingford man added: “Obviously the season hasn’t gone as they would of planned in Championship cricket. They have been on the wrong side of a couple of close results but have a team full of dangerous players.

“They went close to the title last year so are obviously a very talented team and we have to be wary of them. But we know if we continue to perform as we have done in red-ball cricket throughout the year we will be fine.”

Porter currently has 40 Division One wickets to his name and is quickly approaching three 50 wicket seasons in a row. He concluded: “That is always your target as a bowler. We all set personal targets at the start of the season and I am not going to reveal those but I am happy with how my season is going.

“The aim now is to catch Harmy (Simon Harmer sits on 48 wickets), who obviously had those two incredible games which helped us to victories. I missed a game with the Lions but I am backing myself to catch him otherwise I won’t hear the end of it!”

You can see Porter in action on Monday and don’t forget Kids go for a quid this Bank Holiday. Get tickets here.

Ben Allison and Will Buttleman named in London and East squad for Super-4s

Four members of the England Under-19s squad are among the 56 young talents who will contest the fifth Super-4 Competition for the country’s outstanding Under-17s in Loughborough this week.

Derbyshire’s Hamidullah Qadri and Worcestershire’s Adam Finch will line up for the Midlands, Essex seamer Ben Allison for London and East, and Somerset all-rounder Tom Lammonby – who was named England’s best player in the Royal London One-Day Series against India – will hope to lead the South West to a first Super-4 victory.

The North have dominated the competition since it was introduced in 2013, winning their third title out of four last summer – when Yorkshire’s Harry Brook was named man of the tournament, and Durham’s Matt Potts was man of the match in the final.

Both those players have represented their counties at first-team level this season, as well as joining Qadri, Finch, Allison and Lammonby in the England Under-19 squad – showing why the Super-4s are well worth watching for fans with an eye on the future.

Lancashire have six representatives to Yorkshire’s five in this year’s North squad, led by highly-rated wicketkeeper-batsman George Lavelle, the player of the tournament in last year’s Bunbury Festival for Under-15s.

Lavelle is joined by Mo Ahmad, Jamie Crawley, Sam Dorsey, Jack Morley and Rehan Udwadia.

Alec Drury, Harry Harding, George Hill, Eitan Litvin and Vikram Sharma form the Yorkshire quintet, and the North squad is completed by three Cheshire youngsters – Ed Fluck, Ben Gibbon and Sam Perry.

Lammonby, who is from Devon, is one of six players affiliated to Somerset in the South West squad – with Ned Dunning, Nathan Gilchrist, Louis Goldsworthy, Will Smeed and Ben Wells.

They are joined by Milo Ayres, Ben Charlesworth, Jack Gibbs and Tom Price of Gloucestershire, plus Tom Bevan, Chris Matthews and Roman Walker of Glamorgan, and Scott Currie of Hampshire.

Finch is one of three Worcestershire players in the Midlands squad, with Jack Haynes and Zain Ul-Hassan. Warwickshire have four representatives – Ethan Brookes, whose elder brother Henry was another member of the Under-19s squad, plus Jaques Banton, Ben Griffin and Robert Yates. Banton is the younger brother of Tom, the Somerset wicketkeeper-batsman who joined Henry Brookes in the Under-19s.

Northamptonshire also have three players in the Midlands squad – Ben Claydon, Connor Haddow and Adam King – with Jordan Cook and Nick Kimber of Nottinghamshire, and Qadri joined by his Derbyshire team-mate James Taylor, a seamer who made his senior debut against West Indies earlier this month.

Allison is joined by a second Essex representative, Will Buttleman, in the London and East squad, which is dominated by five Surrey players – Freddie Boys, Sam Hall, Prince Singh, Nathan Smith and Nathan Tilley.

Taylor Chandler, Sam Davis and wicketkeeper Jordan Cox represent Kent; Henry Crocombe is a lone representative for Sussex; and the Middlesex trio Jack Davies, Luke Holman and Charlie Scott complete the squad.

The Super-4s week has a different structure this year. The teams will again play each other in 50-over matches over the first three days of competition, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. But instead of a Finals Day on the Saturday, the champions will be determined by the final placings in the league table – leaving Saturday clear for a separate T20 competition.

James Taylor, the former Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and England batsman, will speak to the players when they gather in Loughborough on Monday, and the cricket will be watched by a number of England’s lead coaches as well as Young Lions selectors and scouts, raising the stakes for the players involved.
