Amir to return to Pakistan for fitness and medical tests

Essex Cricket overseas star Mohammad Amir will return to Pakistan tomorrow for a series of fitness and medical tests at the request of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The Pakistan International will still be involved in this evening’s NatWest T20 Blast clash against Sussex Sharks as the Eagles hunt for a quarter-final place.

Amir is scheduled to return to England on Saturday 26 August in time for the crucial Specsavers County Championship game against Somerset at The Cloudfm County Ground.

MATCH PREVIEW | Sussex Sharks v Essex Eagles

Essex Eagles are in action at Hove this evening where they face Sussex Sharks in the final NatWest T20 Blast group match.

The Eagles hopes of reaching the quarter-final stage of the competition took a setback when they were beaten by 11 runs when facing Kent last night.

Chris Silverwood’s men know they must beat Sussex and hope that other results go in their favour if they are to reach the last eight.

Five of the last six meetings between these sides have been won by the chasing team with three victories apiece whilst the Eagles have claimed wins in five of their last seven trips to Sussex including wins in their last two.

Batsman Varun Chopra scored a century against Kent but still finished on the losing side and that is the second time this season the unfortunate opener has reached three figures but ended the match unable to celebrate victory.

He and Dan Lawrence posted 118 from 8.2 overs against the Spitfires before being parted to give Essex the initiative but their efforts proved in vain.

“I felt the opening stand with Dan against Kent had put us into a winning position but then things just got away from us,” he said. “I think their bowlers worked out the wicket after the first 8 overs and kept the pressure of the required run-rate on us. To be fair they came back into the game really well.

“We have to get the two points down at Hove and hopefully other results will go our way and we can qualify. We just came up short against Kent but hopefully, we can bounce back against Sussex.”

Chris Silverwood has named a 14-man squad for tomorrow’s must win encounter and Adam Wheater misses out with a side strain. Young batsman Feroze Khushi comes into the squad after a string of impressive second team performances and is line to make his debut.

Essex Eagles squad:
Ryan ten Doeschate (27) Captain
James Foster (7) Wicket-keeper
Mohammad Amir (5)

Match Report

Kent’s opening pair of Joe Denly and Daniel Bell-Drummond compiled a world-record T20 opening partnership of 207 on a night when records tumbled and the men from south of the Thames moved closer to qualifying for the NatWest Blast knockout stages.

Denly led the carnage with 127 from 66 balls, including 11 fours and seven sixes, beating his own Kent record score of 116. The stand with Bell-Drummond, who was unbeaten at the end on 80, was the third highest for any wicket in the history of the competition.

It also beat the 163, a Kent record for any wicket at the time, the same two batsmen put on earlier in the season against Surrey at the Oval.

However, they were run close by the north Thames team, for whom Varun Chopra hit a career-best T20 114, his second of the season. His 58-ball innings included nine sixes and six fours. When he was out in the 18th over, Essex were 29 runs short with two overs to go, and they finished 11 runs adrift.

Kent now know that a third victory in a row on Friday night against Surrey at Canterbury will take them through to the last eight. Essex also require a win at Hove against Sussex to stand any chance of making the top four in the ultra-tight south group.

For Essex, only Mohammad Amir, who finally removed Denly in the penultimate over, returned decent bowling figures – his four overs cost a comparatively parsimonious 20. Of Essex’s seven bowlers, only Ravi Bopara went for less than 10 an over. Calum Haggett conceded just 18 in his four overs in Essex’s reply.

The start of play was delayed for 20 minutes while the air ambulance landed on the outfield to attend to a steward who had suffered a suspected heart attack.

Put in, Denly started as he meant to go on, contributing 37 of Kent’s first fifty runs including sixes over cow and long-leg off Jamie Porter and Paul Walter respectively. The former Middlesex opener reached the 23rd T20 half-century of his career from the 27th ball he faced.

Denly’s third six came from a free hit after an inadvertent beamer from Walter, the ball being lost as it sailed out of the ground over midwicket. A fourth cleared the ropes in the same vicinity in an over that went for 22 runs and took Kent into three figures in 12 overs.

Bell-Drummond had played second fiddle to his older partner, but a six off Simon Harmer took him to 37 and past the previous first-wicket partnership record of 119 for Kent against Essex in the format.

A swept four off Ryan ten Doeschate took Bell-Drummond to his fifty from 35 balls, and he had a second six to his name in the same over for good measure.

Denly reached his second century of the campaign with a boundary past mid-off. It had taken him 54 balls and contained 10 fours and a fifth six the ball before, hit straight off Zaidi. Another six took Denly to the highest of his three T20 centuries.

There was drama when the world record was broken: it looked at first as if Denly had gone on 119 to a catch on the long-leg boundary by Callum Taylor. But the fielder admitted he trod on the rope and Denly was not only reprieved, but credited with his seventh six.

He was finally out in the 19th over when he went for another big hit against Amir and was caught behind by James Foster. Kent lost a second wicket in the final over when Sam Billings was caught behind to give Walter his 15th wicket of the season, but at a personal cost of 65 runs on the night.

Essex went off like an express train in reply. By the end of the powerplay overs, they were 94 without loss and Chopra had reached his half-century from 19 balls. Mitchell Claydon felt the force in the sixth over when Chopra hit him for three successive sixes followed by three fours to move Essex from 64 to 94 in six balls.

Chopra had already hammered two sixes before that in the previous over from Claydon, whose first two overs went for 46. Sixes number six and seven came off successive balls from Imran Qayyum over long leg and then straighter.

Having put on 118 for the first wicket in nine overs, Dan Lawrence departed for a 22-ball 41, with one six, bowled by Calum Haggett. But at the halfway point, Essex needed 95 from 10 overs; incredibly, they were 34 runs ahead of the Kent total at the same stage of their innings.

They lost Bopara on 138, caught sweeping at Qayyum at short fine leg, as the brakes were applied to the Essex charge. Only 37 runs were scored in the six middle overs from the ninth to 14th and the pressure got to Zaidi who holed out to deep square leg in Darren Stevens’s first over.

A straight six off Neesham, his eighth, took Chopra to his century from 52 balls with six fours. With 39 needed off 18 balls, Chopra carted Neesham for six over midwicket before exiting two balls later, caught in the covers.

Ten Doeschate chipped a six over square leg off the last ball of the 19th over to leave Essex needing 16 from the last six balls. The captain went to the second ball, caught at deep cover by Qayyum, and Adam Milne tied up Paul Walter and James Foster in the final four balls.

Foster looking to keep Essex momentum going versus Kent

No, James Foster can’t remember a NatWest T20 Blast campaign like it, where all nine teams in the South Group can still qualify for the knockout stages with a game or two to play – and he’s been around since the competition started in 2003.

Essex Eagles will go through, and maybe even land a home quarter-final tie by finishing in the top two, by winning the remaining games against Kent Spitfires on Thursday at home and Friday’s televised match at Hove against Sussex Sharks.

“As we’ve seen throughout the competition, everyone’s beating everyone else,” says wicketkeeper, Foster. “It’s one of those formats where, on the day, if you don’t bring your ‘A’ game you can be exposed.

“From experience over the years, you get on a bit of a roll and momentum can go one way or the other – in a positive way, also in a negative way. We’re just on a roll at the minute and we’re confident ahead of our next two games.

“We’ve won our last three games and that breeds confidence. Having said that, we’re still coming up against two extremely good sides. But with this format, someone from either side can have a day-out, which can completely turn the game on its head.

“A batsman can score a wonderful knock off not many balls, and the same with the bowling: a magical couple of overs can rip the heart out of a side.”

Essex had one of each in the low-scoring victory against Gloucestershire at Bristol last time out. Jamie Porter posted his best T20 figures with four for 20, and Varun Chopra took his season’s tally past 300 runs with a whirlwind 44.

“Ports showed his ability and nous, especially the way the batters play in this format, where you have to use your skill-set and try and think one step ahead,” said Foster.

“Varun’s knock got us so far ahead of the game chasing 121, it was a match-winning innings. He’s got some really good ball-striking ability, good long levers and good skill levels – he can hit square and straight, which is very important for a top-order batsman, and he uses his crease exceptionally well.”

Foster has also chipped in with some important contributions lower down the order, with his unbeaten 33 at Hampshire carrying his side over the line in the first of three recent wins.

He says: “It would be nicer to score runs every time. But I’ve been around long enough to accept that sometimes it doesn’t work out. You just try and trust yourself, back yourself every time and hopefully it comes off.”

Westley & Cook set for Day/Night Test against the Windies

Essex batsmen, Tom Westley and Alastair Cook have been named in the England starting XI to face West Indies for the inaugral Day/Night Test match against West Indies on Thursday at Edgbaston.

England captain Joe Root has confirmed that Mark Stoneman will make his debut and the Three Lions will make one change to the side that played in the fourth and final Test against South Africa, with Surrey batsman Stoneman replacing former Durham team-mate Keaton Jennings as the opening partner for Alastair Cook.

Seamer Chris Woakes and spinner Mason Crane miss out on a place in the starting XI from the 13-man squad named for the first ever day-night Test to be hosted in England.

“Mason and Chris Woakes are the guys missing out,” Root told ecb.co.uk. “Looking at the surface, I think we need to play the extra seamer and with the lack of game time Chris has had, another week off will stand him in good stead coming back from such a serious injury. I also think Toby deserves an opportunity in this game.

“Mark Stoneman has scored a lot of runs this year and in previous years. He has a well-rounded game and he’s a mature character, so hopefully he can take his opportunity.”

England team for first Test against West Indies:

Joe Root (Yorkshire, captain)

Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)

James Anderson (Lancashire)

Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire)

Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)

Alastair Cook (Essex)

Dawid Malan (Middlesex)

Toby Roland-Jones (Middlesex)

Ben Stokes (Durham)

Mark Stoneman (Surrey)

Tom Westley (Essex)
