WATCH | Tom Westley shines on England Debut

Tom Westley shined on England debut and has earned praise from the former players, coaches and the media over the past 5 days after a confident start to his Test career. The Essex batsman will be looking to tay in the side for the West Indies Series after hitting a half century to help England record the victory and go 2-1 up in the series over South Africa in the 100th Test at the Oval.

England ran out winners by 239 runs and Westley will be pleased by the way he played scoring 25 in the first innings on Day One, followed up by 59 runs in the second to help his side reach a total of 313 heading into the final day’s play.

MATCH PREVIEW | Essex v West Indies

Essex host the West Indies in a first-class fixture starting at The Cloudfm County Ground on Tuesday with a scheduled start time of 11am for all three days.

The hosts have named a 12-man squad which includes teenage pace bowler Sam Cook, who could be in line to make his senior debut following a string of impressive performances with the ball for the Second XI.

Having spent the last month playing T20 cricket, the match with the tourists offers a timely opportunity for a number of the Essex players to return to the red ball game ahead of their next Specsavers County Championship fixture which starts on Sunday against Yorkshire at Scarborough.

Head Coach Chris Silverwood admits that there could be changes to the usual red ball starting line-up for the match with the West Indies.

“We’ve got to get the balance right between getting a bit of rest into some of the players whilst getting others back into the swing of things,” he said. “But it is a great opportunity to get back into a bit of red ball cricket and prepare for Yorkshire.

“It’s always nice for us to play against International sides, often a youngster will come in take his chance and do well, gaining confidence and turning a few heads.

“So there will be opportunities for some of the guys to perform against a Test side. For those that won’t be involved in the West Indies game, they will be working hard in the nets so it’s going to be a busy three days for all the first team squad with one thing in mind and that is to prepare for Yorkshire.

“It seems an age since our last red ball match when we played Middlesex, so it will be great to get back to that format. It’s not always easy to keep switching between codes but from a coaching point of view, all you can do is to try and provide the best environment for players to practice.

“I can see from a player’s perspective how it can be difficult to go from one format to another but we’ll all be working hard to try and make that transition easier and get everyone back into red ball mode.”

Jack Plom called up to full England U19 squad for India series

Essex bowler Jack Plom has been called up to the full England U19 squad after impressing recently for the Invitational XI.

England have made two enforced changes to their squad for the second Under-19 Test against India which starts at Worcester next Monday, when they will be aiming to bounce back from a heavy defeat at Chesterfield this week.

Josh Tongue and Matt Potts have rejoined their counties, Worcestershire and Durham respectively, to allow them time to prepare for the round of Specsavers County Championship fixtures which start next Sunday.

That leaves England needing two seamers, and they have called up Jack Blatherwick from Nottinghamshire and Jack Plom from Essex.

Blatherwick was a member of England’s touring squad in India last winter, while Plom impressed for the Invitational XI who caused the Indians some real problems in their warm-up match at Loughborough University last week, taking six for 25 in the first innings.

Young Lions head coach Andy Hurry and the other selectors John Abrahams and David Graveney will also have the four members of the 15-man squad who missed out on the XI in Chesterfield – Leicestershire wicketkeeper Harry Swindells, Blatherwick’s Nottinghamshire team-mate Liam Patterson-White and Warwickshire pair Liam Banks and George Panayi – to consider.

MATCH PREVIEW | Essex Eagles v Gloucestershire

Having suffered a 72 run defeat by Middlesex on Thursday night, Essex Eagles have named a 14-man squad for the NatWest T20 Blast encounter against Gloucestershire on Saturday evening.

Young fast bowler Sam Cook has been added to the squad after impressing for the Second XI in recent weeks and will be in line for a T20 Blast debut, should he appear.

Head Coach Chris Silverwood admitted that he was bitterly disappointed with the defeat to Middlesex. “We came here knowing that a win would put us in a strong position in the South Group but obviously, those hopes have taken a knock.

“We said we would go hard down the order but on Thursday, it didn’t work. Against Hampshire recently we were excellent but unfortunately, it hasn’t worked against Middlesex, but we’ll keep going.

“There were a couple of positives to take from Thursday’s match. Dan Lawrence was our stand-out bowler against Middlesex and he also did well with the bat and he is emerging as a real strong talent for us. It was also great to see James Foster play the way he did and it was a fantastic innings.

“It can be frustrating with the inconsistency in our performances but what I will say is that we’ve got some good kids in our team who are learning all the time, so you are going to get inconsistencies.

“Obviously, there is plenty of work to be done but at the same time, I think that it is very important that we keep positive and keep pushing towards our goals and keep aiming to win every game we can.”

Essex Eagles squad:

Ryan ten Doeschate (27) Captain
James Foster (7) Wicket-keeper

Match Report:

In front of a 27,000 crowd at Lord’s on Thursday night, Essex Eagles suffered a 72 run defeat by Middlesex in the NatWest T20 Blast competition.

Middlesex, who were put into bat, scored 203 for 6 before dismissing the Eagles for 131 in 16.2 overs despite 50 from James Foster with paceman Tom Helm returning 5 for 11 from 3.2 overs.

The visitors were always behind the asking rate and although Dan Lawrence hit 29 out of 47 before he became the third wicket to fall, Essex hopes floundered further when Ravi Bopara was run out for 11 after backing up.

That left the Eagles 57 for 4 and by the halfway stage, the innings was in tatters at 72 for 6. Four of the top five batsmen in the order all presented Eoin Morgan with catches, two at backward point and two at cover and it was only thanks to a 63 runs partnership between Foster and Paul Walter that the total was carried into three figures.

Both batsmen fell to Helm in the 15th over with the score on 125 and without addition, the bowler added Mohammad Amir to his collection before the over was completed.

Brendon McCullum thrashed his way to 63 from 28 balls that included 5 sixes and 6 fours before he was caught by Simon Harmer at long on when facing the bowling of Bopara. His departure left Middlesex 91 for 2 in the 9th over to end a 73 runs stand in 6 overs with John Simpson.

The latter went on to make 51 whilst Morgan contributed 39 but both were to become victims of Dan Lawrence, easily the pick of the Eagles bowlers.

He returned his best T20 figures of 3 for 21 in 4 overs but elsewhere, his colleagues came in for plenty of punishment including Matt Dixon who conceded 26, including three sixes, from the final over of the hosts innings.

Interval Report:

Essex Eagles have been set a challenging target if they are to win the NatWest T20 Blast contest at Lord’s and played in front of a capacity crowd.

Middlesex closed their innings on 203 for 6 after a whirlwind 63 from Brendon McCullum and 51 from John Simpson who figured in a 73 runs partnership spanning just 6 overs for the second wicket .

Pick of the Essex attack was spinner Dan Lawrence who returned his best figures in this form of the game claiming 3 for 21 from his 4 overs.

Essex won the toss and elected to field against a side who started the game at the foot of the South Group.

Mohammad Amir proved typically frugal with his opening over of the match costing just one run off the bat. In contrast, Paul Walter felt the force of Brendon McCullum’s blade when his first over cost 18 runs including the first 6 of the match by the New Zealander.

It was in the 3rd over that the Eagles claimed their first wicket and it was Matt Dixon that found the breakthrough with his first delivery when Nick Gubbins holed out to Varun Chopra at deep square leg for a single.

Amir’s next over cost 17 runs – including two 6’s for McCullum as he and partner Simpson went on the rampage. The Pakistan fast bowler was not the only one to suffer heavy treatment at the hands of the Middlesex pair. Walter went of 13 in his second over, whilst Matt Dixon conceded 17 in his second over.

McCullum had struck 5 sixes and 6 fours having faced only 28 balls when he drove to long-on facing Ravi Bopara and was caught by Simon Harmer.

With the score 91 for 2, Simpson was joined by Eion Morgan and the pair continued the run-flow adding 69 in 7 overs before Lawrence had Simpson stumped by James Foster for 51.

The home side were now 160-3 and without addition, Lawrence removed George Scott for a duck in an over that cost just 1 run.

Bopara , Lawrence and Amir then conceded 17 runs from the next three overs whist Lawrence bowled Morgan for 39 and facing the final over, the home side had advanced to 177 for 5.

However, Dixon proved costly with 26 runs accrued including three sixes although he did account for Ryan Higgins taking the home side past 200.

MATCH PREVIEW | Middlesex v Essex Eagles

Essex Eagles make the short journey to Lord’s where they face Middlesex on Thursday night in their latest NatWest T20 Blast contest.

The Eagles comprehensively beat Hampshire in their last completed match in the South Group before having to settle for a point in the wash-out at Cardiff against Glamorgan last Sunday.

Head Coach Chris Silverwood admits that the trip to the Principality was frustrating. “It was long way to go, only to be beaten by the weather,” he said.

“We had gone down there in good spirits and looking for two more points following the win over Hampshire and we all felt very positive but in the end, we had to settle for a point.

“Now we have to concentrate on the match with Middlesex on Thursday and the game with Gloucestershire two days later. Looking at the South Group table, the teams are all bunched up which is good because it is all to play for and at the moment. The quest for a place in the top-four looks wide open with only a few points separating the top team from the bottom team.

“We treat every game as a must-win game, that’s our mentality and philosophy and that’s how we will be approaching these forthcoming matches. If we keep playing to our strengths, then we’ll do alright.”

The Eagles will be without Tom Westley who is on England duty for the third Test match against South Africa and Chris admits he was delighted to see the batsman give his opportunity to experience Test cricket for the first time.

“County cricket is all about producing England cricketers,” he stated. “Obviously we take a lot of pride in seeing players go on and get their opportunity. To do that, guys have got to perform well for us in the first instance and Tom has done exactly that.

“We wish him all the best and I told him before he left that we are all very proud of him and look forward to seeing him wearing his Three Lions cap. It’s a very proud moment for the club to see him make the step up from playing for Essex to becoming an England cricketer  and we are all delighted for him.”

Westley primed and ready for England Test debut

Essex Vice-captain Tom Westley joined up with the England Test squad yesterday ahead of making his debut against South Africa tomorrow.

The Third Test of the series will take place at The Oval and Westley will bat at number three for the home side.

The 28-year-old completed all his respective Media duties yesterday and is primed and ready to go against the Proteas.

Westley said: “I feel like I am as a ready as I ever will be. I am 28 now and have been consistently scoring runs for a number of years for Essex now. The key is to try and replicate that for England and cement my place in the top order.

“It is very reassuring to be given the opportunity to bat at number three. Ever since the call up that has given me the assurance that I will be making my debut. Rather than just being named in a squad I have known ever since the call that I will be playing so that has helped me get prepared and get my head round it.”

Westley joined up with Essex teammate Alastair Cook at The Oval and added: “It has been nice to see him. It has been a little while since the last Championship game and I was away with the Lions for a little bit but it has been good to catch up.

“I love batting with Cooky for Essex, so hopefully we can bat for long periods together for England and both be successful.”

Match Preview | Glamorgan v Essex Eagles

Essex Eagles travel to Wales for the next NatWest T20 Blast contest when they meet Glamorgan on Sunday at The SWALEC in Cardiff.

The Eagles will be looking to avenge a defeat by the Welsh side just a week ago but they travel in confident mood having crushed Hampshire by 7 wickets on Friday night at The Cloudfm County Ground.

In what is becoming a tightly-contested South Group, success in the Principality will restore belief that the Eagles could yet make the knockout stages on the competition despite having lost four of the first five matches in the tournament before the win over Hampshire.

Last season, Essex Eagles again started poorly with four defeats from their opening five matches but a revival in form saw them reach the quarter-finals before they were eliminated by Nottinghamshire.

The Eagles have named the same 14-man squad that were on duty last Friday and that includes Tom Westley who was forced to miss the Hampshire match with a sickness bug. Westley was recently named by England for the third Test match against South Africa that starts at the Kia Oval next Thursday and, after Sunday, he is likely to be missing from the remainder of the Eagles group matches.

Chris Silverwood was delighted with the manner of Friday’s victory. “It was a must win game for us and we showed character and got ourselves back into the fight for a place in the top four,” said the Eagles Head Coach.

“We’ve got ourselves within striking distance and if we keep turning out performances like that, then we will be fine.

“Wheats (Adam Wheater) went in at the top of the order on Friday and did a great job, Dan Lawrence dropped to three but got runs and showed good intent and got on with the job for us. We said going into the match that we needed to win the first 10 overs and we did that to put ourselves in a great position. We also improved our run-rate which was good.

“I have to say that the bowlers did a wonderful job. We brought in Matt Dixon and he did very well whilst Paul Walter goes from strength-to-strength and Ravi (Bopara) bowled beautifully. Mohammad Amir is a world-class performer, there was some very canny bowling and Ryan (ten Doeschate) manoeuvred his attack very well.

“So all-round, it was a very good performance but there is still a long way to go. We obviously need to put a run of positive results together and see where that takes us.”

Essex Eagles squad to face Glamorgan:

Ryan ten Doeschate (27) Captain
James Foster (7) Wicket-Keeper
Mohammad Amir (5)
Ravi Bopara (25)
Varun Chopra (6)
Matt Dixon (30)
Simon Harmer (11)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Jamie Porter (44)
Callum Taylor (67)
Paul Walter (22)
Tom Westley (21)
Adam Wheater (31)
Ashar Zaidi (99)
